Pokémon GO Groudon is a pure Ground type with Max CP of 4074, 270 attack, 251 defense and 182 stamina, making it one of the strongest Pokémon to ever appear in Pokémon GO, on par with Ho-Oh. Groudon’s best moves are Mud Shot with Earthquake or Solar Beam.
Groudon can be built in two ways:
- Mud Shot and Earthquake – a strong Ground moveset
- Mud Short and Solar Beam – a hybrid Ground Grass that has better matchups but doesn’t benefit from STAB

Groudon in the Pokémon GO meta
Groudon is a top tier Pokémon with elite stats. Its Ground typing makes him have very few viable counters, but it also makes him one of the more boring legendaries to be released. All of Groudon’s Charged moves are empowered under Clear weather.
Groudon will fare well in almost every team, given its incredible stats and strong moveset, but we were honestly hoping for Precipice Blades as a charged move. As of the time of this writing, Groudon has access to Earthquake instead of Precipice Blades, its signature move.
Best Groudon moves and movesets in Pokémon GO
Best moveset: Mud Shot + Earthquake / Solar Beam
Groudon has access to the following moves:
- Dragon Tail Dragon (fast)
- Mud Shot Ground (fast)
- Earthquake Ground (1 bar, charged)
- Solar Beam Grass (1 bar, charged)
- Fire Blast Fire (1 bar, charged)
Always go for Mud Shot over Dragon Tail, as it outperforms it in energy generation and DPS, despite apparently having low damage. Dragon Tail doesn’t have a charged move to accompany and we consider it to be just a flavor move with no real benefit over Mud Shot.
Groudon’s charged moves are all 1 bar moves with high damage and interesting typing. Earthquake is the obvious go-to choice for a Ground Groudon build, however, its typing has very few viable matchups and ends up being basically a Rhydon.
The interesting choice is Solar Beam, similar to Ho-Oh, which performs well, deals around the same amount of damage as Earthquake and has many viable matchups.
Fire Blast is simply bad and is outperformed by other charge moves.
Shiny Groudon in Pokemon GO
A normal Groudon is characteristically red, featuring a strong set of armor on it’s back. Black stripes covering its back, arms and legs.
A shiny Groudon looks identical, however, its shell is yellow.

In the anime
Groudon appeared in Gaining Groudon. Team Aqua had captured Groudon but didn’t have the correct orb to control it. Team Aqua planned to make a trade with Team Magma, who have captured Kyogre. The trade was about to be made when Archie decided to use Kyogre to destroy everyone, including his fellow henchmen. The battle between Kyogre and Groudon occurred during the following episode, The Scuffle of Legends.
