Pokémon GO Monthly AR Photo Showcase: July 2019

Photographer: IAmALionRAWR

Posted in

As Pokémon GO pushes AR to the furthest extents, it seems only natural that Trainers have learned a few new skills when using these tools. This means not only catching Pokémon in AR modes but also taking up a more recreational pass-time; AR Photography!

Throughout July, Trainers went out to photograph Pokémon in the wild. These Trainers have not only taken outstanding photographs but have also brought back stunning stories from their adventures. The AR Photo Showcase is a place where these Trainers can show to the world what they have accomplished, one photograph at a time.

AR Photo Entries

In this segment, we take a look at the AR Photographs and stories submitted by your fellow Trainers.

Sunrise Ho-Oh

AR to

“Just a picture of shiny Ho-Oh chilling in front of the sunrise that I took at the top of a mountain where people go to celebrate Christian Holidays. I woke up at 2 o’clock in the morning and met with a group of other people to follow a trail to get to the top, we walked for two and a half hours to get there and watch the sun rise.”

Eevee Nicks, One with Nature!

AR to

“On our usual training trail, my Pokémon and I decided to have a rest when a precocious shiny Eevee appeared. It playfully hopped atop the bench I was resting on so I snapped this quick shot before I caught her! I found her in the woods so I’m calling her Eevee Nicks in honor of the great Stevie Nicks.”

Lily Pad Lotad

AR to

“Staring Lake is always a good place to find a Shiny Lotad hanging out in the shady areas waiting for the flowers to bloom from the lily pads. Lotad tend to hide when you come near the lily pond. Lucky for us, this Shiny Lotad didn’t mind us getting close for the picture. If you ask me, I think he liked the attention.”

Location: Minnesota, United States
Photographer:

Baby Feebas

AR to

“This is a little pool where all kinds of fish live in peace, Feebas, Magikarp, and Goldeen. All of them swim in peace each day. They even let people feed them a little bread (or some cheetos too). I hope nobody with a rod comes around! Maybe if I feed him really good he will turn into a shiny Milotic by the power of love?”

Location: Valencia, España
Photographer:
Krullnate

Side Note: This photo shows that with a little time and thought you can come up with simply genius photos, yes, it’s a Feebas in a pond, but wait, have you seen one like this? It takes a special kind of effort to think of these sort of photos, simple, yet effective – HUB Writer Josh Provines

Heavenly Golden Goose

AR to

“As the sun sets over Washington, a golden Altaria descends from the clouds. Many Trainers have attempted to view the majesty of shiny Altaria. I have been lucky enough to get the golden opportunity to see such a sight. I may never see such a beautiful Pokémon again.”

Location: Washington, United States

Entorini

AR to

“While touring Greece on an expedition to find the legendary beast, Entei, we were told by the locals it had been spotted on the volcano of Santorini. We chartered a boat immediately and set off to find the elusive fire-dog. On the 4th day of the expedition we stumbled upon a herd of spooked Doduo. Our data had suggested that Entei would often prey on Doduo. After following the tracks to one of the active sites within the volcano, scorched paw prints had covered what little grass was left on the small volcanic island. A faint rustling and a predatory growl was leading us to a small clearing. It could only mean one thing. The great Entei was upon us…”

Wet Forest Encounter

AR to

“While hiking in the woods I found this little beauty, those beady little eyes, oh, she is such a cutie! I thought that I might want her, that we were a perfect match, so I got my trusty ultra ball and got ready to make the catch!

A pond in the wet forest is a great home for a Lotad, but she definitely had taking a liking to her new surroundings. I can tell that we’re already bonding very well!”

Adjusted Entries

Let’s take AR Photography a bit further. It is time to look at the retouched, filtered, and edited AR Photographs that your fellow Trainers have taken.

In Bloom

AR to

“This is one of the very first AR photos I took when GO Snapshot came out. It was Feebas Research Day and we started out in a local park that has a good density of Pokéstops. When I saw these flowers I couldn’t resist getting shiny Roserade out to pose, their colours matched perfectly.”

Location: Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Photographer:
kittypokemonsalot

Side Note: When I saw the splash of colors in this picture I immediately knew I had to add it to the Showcase, if Roserade wasn’t already gorgeous enough, kitty made sure to snap the most stunning sides of her – HUB Writer Josh Provines

Sneaking Snapshots

AR to

“Bug-types are a favorite of mine to photograph, and this setting matched with Yanmega perfectly. We were waiting for an EX raid egg to hatch so I had a few minutes to spare before the lobby could start, so I snuck off to take AR photos. I can never resist the uglier/less popular Pokémon!”

Location: Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Photographer:
kittypokemonsalot

Side Note: This is one of those photos that just just give me a calm vibe, they’re a perfect blend between AR and IRL, not pushing the boundaries too much, but also showcasing nature in a way that everyone can see – HUB Writer Josh Provines

July’s Hidden Blaze

AR to

“It was a beautiful July night when all of a sudden termites started appearing under a street light. I immediately searched for Solrock and took a quick AR+ photo of it. The result was simply stunning. I haven’t seen flying termites again this year so far, but luckily I will always remember how awesome that night was because of this shot.”

Eclipse Over the Sunset

AR to

“It was a hot and humid summer day. Just as I was venturing home I noticed the sun starting to set. A few moments later my surroundings quickly darkened. As I turned my head to the sun I noticed a creature in the sky eclipsing the sun. I quickly took my phone out to get a picture of the creature but just as creature came, it was gone just as fast, leaving me to wonder what is was.”

Beautiful Garden

AR to

“It was the Redo GO Fest Chicago for Saturday ticket holders. We went to the Botanical Garden in Montreal. Took some pictures and I think this one deserve to be on the Showcase. Froslass surrounded by flowers and plants close to the stream is quite something to enjoy watching.”

Location: Montreal, Canada

Chain-Link Shieldon

AR to

“What a hard day at work for Shieldon! I noticed this little guy at a bay near where I live. He was helping some workers build a new chain for the edge of the water. He looked so hard at work I didn’t want to bother him, but I managed to snag a photo before he noticed. That was some hard work for him, building a fence all day!”

Thunderstruck

AR to

“We started our special Raikou Raid Day about an hour late and only got in ten raids. Even after I caught him, he wanted out of his Pokéball to flex a little. I took some inspiration from Instagram photographer, @pokemongohartlepool, added some lightning and did a #Blackimon. I even managed to get some of our community in the background.”

Let Freedom Ring

AR to

“First of all, shiny Alolan Exeggutor looks amazing! Second, it’s the only Pokémon tall enough to use real fireworks as a back drop. Third, I was lucky enough to take the photo as the fireworks matched the color of the Pokémon. This all happened within the span of 90 seconds. I definitely love this pic!”

Dragon Cave

AR to

“When the rough sea hits Blackhall beach, it brings the remains of the old colliery with it. turning the beaches black with coal. It’s said that dragons which live within caves along the cliffs face, eat this coal. Keeping them warm as they explore the freezing depths of the North Sea.”

Today is the Day

AR to

“On one fateful day, a young woman finally got her chance to meet the best friend she’s always dreamed of. After a brief talk from Professor Willow, I was ready! It was time to choose my first Pokémon. It took careful deliberation, but Squirtle was the obvious choice. We spent the whole first day getting to know each other. And as the sun set on that wonderful day, I captured the moment I knew was going to be one of my most treasured memories.”

Goodbye Butterfree

AR to

“Out of all the episodes of the anime (arguably, I haven’t seen most of the recent ones) the episode where Ash releases his Butterfree has stuck with me the most. Having all my grandparents survive well into my twenties, the episode gave me my first real sense of loss. This photo is my attempt to pay homage to that scene.

Fortunately, my 3-year old son was being pretty cooperative that day, since the most challenging part was getting him to stand still by a pond without moving while looking at something that wasn’t really there, and then trying to time that with the sunset.

I’ve made an edit of it including the female butterfree (AKA Yoko Ono) as well, but due to showcase rules I left it out of my submission. If anyone is curious to see that, I posted it on twitter.”

Side Note: Usually for safety and privacy reasons, when an AR Photo includes children in them, I don’t include them into the showcase. However, this is the first time I have seen this done in a way that suits and improves the AR photo. I’m surprised to see Ash this young! – HUB Writer Josh Provines

Dancing In the Forest

AR to

“If a tree dances in the forest and no one sees it happen, did it actually ever happen? I say YES! I got this sneaky photo of a little Bonsly dancing on a log while I was hiking the other day and just love how contagious his happiness seems! Dance like no one’s watching, always!”

Moment of Peace

AR to

“This Horsea found a moment of serenity in a world full of chaos. With the water trickling around us and nothing but the sounds of birds chirping and frogs croaking, this was truly a blessed moment. Sometimes we all need a little reminder to stop and soak in the little moments.”

Sagrada Luguía

AR to

“The Sagrada Familia is a Catholic Basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí. This UNESCO world heritage site has been in construction since 1882. Gaudí died in 1926 and only 1/4 of the Basilica was finished, its projected date of completion is in the year 2026. This basilica has taken longer to build than the Great Pyramids 😱. Gaudí has designed everything, even the way the workers would stay building the place, he built a school right there where the worker’s children would study since young and were finally trained to continue the work of their parents so that this building would transcend generations. The place is filled with symbolism, like 18 towers, Gaudí being buried there, pillars like trees held up by tortoises, and more! If you’d like to know the Sagrada Familia a little better please be sure to ask questions in the comments section or google a bit, you won’t be disappointed. A beautiful shiny Lugia has been sighted inside the Sagrada Familia!”

Surprise

AR to

“My buddy was playing in the forest and I just had to take a photo. It was a little hot, but nothing stops this little Turtwig from having fun! He took a long nap after playing for a while. It was a great day to enjoy ourselves and meet some new Pokémon.”

Location: Illinois, United States
Photographer:

Side Note: I don’t really know how it is that Frank managed to give Turtwig such realistic and beautiful textures, but the editing here is stunning! Would make a great piece for a future #Texturemon AR Photo trend! – HUB Writer Josh Provines

Never Let Go of Your Dreams

AR to

“Childhood memories are some of the most important and joyful ones we have, they are unique for each one of us, you feel attached to them cause they are your own. As for your dreams, your childish dreams, be like that little girl, keep holding onto them and never let go!”

Morning Dew

AR to

“During a peaceful morning walk I was lucky enough to spot a Caterpie drinking fresh dew from the leaves. It’s usually difficult to spot, since Caterpie crawl into foliage where they camouflage themselves among leaves that are the same color as their body. They are also know for their ferocious hunger, I’m sure those leaves won’t stay there for long.”

Prepare for Trouble

AR to

“I was taking a walk at a nearby park, when I came across Team Rocket trying to steal Pokéballs and potions! I quickly ended up in a battle with them. Once I beat them, I noticed they left behind a poor Bulbasaur, but something was different about this Bulbasaur. It seemed like it was possessed or something. I figured it’d be best to catch it, and keep it with me so I could do more research. It looks like Team Rocket is doing something to these Pokémon, and we need to stop them!”
