[Opinion] GO Hub Reacts to Feebas Day

Cover Photo

This weekend, the world erupted after the latest event in Pokémon Go. This event featured completing research tasks for a Feebas reward, and a chance for a shiny Feebas. This event caused a lot of disruption in the community, with a crazy mix of positive and negative emotions.

Everyone wants a chance to talk about the event, the successes, the failures, and suggestions, including everyone here at the Go Hub. We want this to be a safe place where you can express your opinions about the event; the catch is that you have to find something positive about the event, as well as something negative, then make some suggestions for what could make the event better as a whole.

We at the Go Hub collected staff responses from everyone who wanted to participate, from the writers, to the artists, to the Discord moderators.

This is meant to be a less factual analysis of the event, letting others see insight into what we think about this particular event, since it seems to have such an extreme community reaction. We will have an actual event analysis later this week, so stay tuned if that is more your cup of tea. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below, and without further ado, let us see how the Go Hub reacted to Feebas Day.

Be prepared for a long text, feel free to skim our ideas!

What about the event went well?

“I really am desperate for a Riolu, so I had a faint chance of doing it with needing to hatch eggs for Feebas Quests. (I did not get one but I had several chances). Plus, a different type of event is a good thing, Niantic being creative cannot, and should not, be classed wholly as bad, new and fresh events/rewards can only be good for the game on the whole.”

  • ProHitman, Go Hub Writer

“As a parent, the combination of this event, the current raid boss options, and an Ex-Raid that day, was enough to get my son excited about the game again. I managed to get one shiny Feebas to include in my dex, stocked up on some Feebas candy and stardust.”

  • ABSOLutelyPerfect, Go Hub Admin

“A lot of people on the street, more interaction. Really busy at raids, like the old days! And for me, it was an even better event for bringing the community together than Community Day. The social aspect was nailed in my opinion!”

  • Orange Heart, Go Hub Artist

“It gathered people into areas (though some far away) with a lot of stops, really bringing to light how many people actually played Pokémon Go. Went to a raid after the event and there were over 100 people there, all looking around in amazement at all the others who gathered as well. Of course, it crashed the servers once we all tried to lobby, but they worked eventually so we can ignore that part.”

  • Kristy, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“I ended up gathering some dust.”

  • Pacadermic, Go Hub Writer

“We learned that quests are a bad way to go about introducing a shiny to people. What happened should NEVER be repeated without significant improvements.”

  • Dare, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“The number of catches I gained.”

  • Community, Floofiest Discord Moderator

“All the shinies I got. (I had to lol).”

  • Rogue, Discord Moderator

“Having to do a bit of “work” / having luck to receive a shiny feebas, it was not a handout.”

  • Juliet, Discord Moderator

“The concept itself was great, I mean, a day of missions to get a shiny? Sounds like a plan, it certainly helped to get people out and about, a lot of the hermits that just spend time sitting at a lure with incense on CD, actually went out and walked around for the event, it’s a great incentive to get people walking, not just sitting and waiting.”

  • Josh Provines, Go Hub Writer

“The majority of stops had a task for feebas, only found one which did not.”

  • Ali, Discord Moderator

“Most of the event was lackluster but the lack of quest diversity took the players to raid instead of searching feebas so we were 20 people in every raid during the whole event.”

  • 123321Mario, Discord Moderator

“What I found the most exciting and appealing was catching pokémon, to be honest. I did catch a bunch of them in those 2 hours I played, because of the quests. Also, it feels better to do all those quests, knowing we are working towards a bigger reward (bigger than the normal Feebas we’d see after the completion of the quest), Shiny Feebas.”

  • ASilvaSLB, Discord Moderator

“It got me outside and walking a bit.”

  • BinetCauchy, Go Hub Writer

“I liked the new idea of an event for 3 hours trying to get a shiny through quests, instead of in the wild.”

  • Fitz City, Go Hub Writer

“It got me out and got me to spend time exploring and hanging out with friends.”

  • Papa Jorro, Go Hub Writer

What went wrong with the event?

“This is very simple, the quests were too difficult for the time allotted, the time limit was strict, and it nearly forces you to travel to get to areas with good Pokéstops. I understand that anything in the game can be classed as “anti-rural” but this was particularly egregious, as not only were rural players royally screwed, but even those in a city had to travel to places that might not be a usual or good spot, on the sole fact that it had a lot of Pokéstops to access. To be efficient during this event, you had to spend money: Money for travel, Money for Incubators, and Money for Pokéballs to make the difficult throws. While microtransactions are unfortunately a staple in today’s gaming world, there is a difference in making them just for cosmetics or minor in-game upgrades, and for making them wholly necessary to compete effectively in an event such as this.”

  • ProHitman, Go Hub Writer

“The positives I listed above, also became negatives as the event continued. We attempted to do some raids with the community prior to the event, which were successful. However, our Ex-Raid started at the same time as the Feebas Event cutting into the time we had to search for quests. Once we began, the excitement was short lived. Weather in our area was an issue. (Not that anyone can control the weather, but I do want to note that it did play a small role in our disappointment.) Due to the nature of the quests and the distance between the stops in our town, vehicle use was a must to avoid anyone getting sick from walking in the cold wind/rain in order to be somewhat successful. As we all know, driving and playing is a huge no-no so stopping at each stop continued to eat away the short amount of time we had to gather the tediously long quests.

Now, the main difference in my response versus others here is that I am a parent. I began playing because my son was so excited about Pokémon Go, and I eventually found a love for it too. My heart broke during this event because he was completely deflated from the requirements needed to even have a chance at a Shiny Feebas. His morale has been somewhat low with the game already, but with Groudon being his favorite Pokémon, I thought we could at least supplement some raids before and during the event to keep the “hype” going. It seemed as if once Feebas Day started, all T5s in our area just disappeared! Disappointment is apart of life, I wholeheartedly believe that not everything should be handed to us, but at least allow us to find some fun and excitement while playing.”

  • ABSOLutelyPerfect, Go Hub Admin

“To be fair, the quests took too much time to complete, could only do about 27 in 3 hours. Of course, I went out for shiny Feebas mostly, but I encountered only 1 and my girlfriend had none at all. So it seemed like shiny rate was low as hell!”

  • Orange Heart, Go Hub Artist

“The shiny rate was too low, the quests were too difficult, etc. The normal stuff. Hatch an egg was impossible, buddy candy was borderline frustrating, and I was consistently running out of pokeballs and spawns to get 10/15 great/nice throws on. Traveling 40 minutes into town for pokestops only to dump most of the research (hatch an egg) and get no shiny was disappointing. I only hatched one egg the whole event (infinity incubator and only 10km eggs). Most of all I just didn’t have fun, I did not feel like I was having a good time out playing.”

  • Kristy, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“Weather. HORRIBLE selection of quests tasks. 10 and 15 catches is WAYYY too many. The shiny rate was too low to please the masses. RNG is always going to be there, but people don’t complain about CD because while one person may get 15 the other usually still gets a handful. Unless you only play for a few minutes you usually won’t get shutout. Because a massive number of pokestops would be needed, I spent Feebas day downtown in a major city. This made hatching eggs for the “hatch an egg” quest and the “earn 1 candy from walking your buddy” quest literally impossible. GPS drifts so much because of the skyscrapers that you walk in place, then sprint to catch up to where you actually are, which triggers the speed lock in-game and results in getting next to no credit for distance.”

  • Pacadermic, Go Hub Writer

“Completing quests is not conducive to a “Community” style event. People will be running around trying to complete these tedious quests rather than spending time talking and enjoying each others company.”

  • Dare, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“Feebas day was extremely tedious and boring. Feebas is very rare, so it induced FOMO. Quests were unnecessarily long. Didn’t feel like it was worth the effort at all. Took long periods of time to get the great and nice throws, 15 was way too big a number for a single quest.”

  • Community, Floofiest Discord Moderator

“Quests took way to long to complete, 15 quests took me almost an hour.”

  • Rogue, Discord Moderator

“Extremely difficult to obtain a shiny feebas, probably due to limited research tasks. Hatching an egg and earning a candy- can’t do either quickly. 15 nice throws/10 Great throws- umm fabulous! If pokémon spawn rates were increased, but seemingly not the case. Overall just a stressful disjointed event.”

  • Juliet, Discord Moderator

“Oh god, what went right? The execution of the event went terribly, hard to complete missions, low shiny rates, a limited time window, a limitation by the actual amount of stops you have access, in concept this event seemed great however in practical use, it failed miserably for these reasons.”

  • Josh Provines, Go Hub Writer

“Tasks took too long to complete, even with rapid catching and convenient egg hatching only 60-70 tasks completed. 70 encounters for a CD type event shiny is not enough when normally I see 400-450 Totodile for example.”

  • Ali, Discord Moderator

“As I said before: the lack of diversity in the quests mixed with the difficulty (compared to the Squirtle CD ones).”

  • 123321Mario, Discord Moderator

“Quests were hard to complete in little time, and the shiny rate could have been higher, in my opinion. Well, let’s start with the quests’ difficulty. Difficulty may not be the best way to word it, but what I mean is: Quests were just too hard and time-consuming, for a mere 3-hour long event (I only did 28 quests in the whole 2 hours I played). To make 15 Nice throws, you usually need an average of 15 pokémon, and, well, not everyone has 15 pokémon nearby all the time. And tbh, there aren’t many people that can hatch eggs (not even hatching 1) in those 3 hours. I was hatching a 7 Km egg, and of course, I didn’t finish hatching it, so I ended up binning all the “Hatch 1 egg” quests. The shiny rate could be higher, definitely, but most people complain about that part because they didn’t manage to do as many quests as they would have liked to (the consequence of the quests’ difficulty). If quests were easier, the players could do more quests, therefore possibly getting a Shiny Feebas.”

  • ASilvaSLB, Discord Moderator

“I would have been better off playing in my car driving around the city, and not just walking and searching for the right pokestops with the right quests that I can get done.”

  • BinetCauchy, Go Hub Writer

“Quests were heavily based on moving due to hatching eggs and obtaining buddy candy. With cold weather climates, this incentivized driving while playing. This is dangerous. For me, I didn’t have a choice if I wanted to have the best possible chances of getting a shiny Feebas.”

  • Fitz City, Go Hub Writer

“The quests were lengthy and frustrating. The shiny chances were low and almost nonexistent.”

  • Papa Jorro, Go Hub Writer

What suggestions can we offer to improve this kind of event for the future?

“The issue was the time limit coupled with hard quests. If they reduced the quest requirements or made it a research day instead of a Community Day-esque Research Event the backlash would not be nearly the levels it seems to be now. Additionally, they could introduce a greater variety of quests, slightly bump the spawn rates of the featured Pokémon, or introduce raids into the mixture as well.”

  • ProHitman, Go Hub Writer

“I think my solutions would fall in line with most here. Have a “one or the other” mentality.

– Be a 3hr event BUT make the tasks shorter to complete/easier to obtain; or

– Keep tasks requirements more difficult BUT make the event longer;

– Find a way to make it more community oriented by involving interaction-type tasks (i.e. raids, trades, PvP, etc.)

– Lastly, talk to your vast Pokémon Go Community (regularly). Ask them what kind of events they feel are successful or unsuccessful; what kind of events they’d like to see in the future; and use that information to continue doing the amazing work you all have set out to do!”

  • ABSOLutelyPerfect, Go Hub Admin

“I’d like to see more quests types, like involve raiding and berry throwing and make them easier to complete, mainly because of the limited time window! The shiny rate should be the same as Community Day IF the featured Pokémon has only 1 evolution. (So aiming to hit 2 shinies).”

  • Orange Heart, Go Hub Artist

“I think the concept is there, and it can work. After talking to a few people I think the best fix for this event would be making it longer than 3 hours. 3 hours is too short a time to travel to get pokestops, as not everyone has access to a copious amount of stops in their area. Some have to travel as far as a whole city over in order to have enough stops. 3 hours isn’t enough time to justify traveling that far. If this event were to be, 24 hours, or a weekend, the difficulty of the research is justified.”

  • Kristy, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“Quests that are easier to complete, especially if the shiny rate is going to be as low as it was.”

  • Pacadermic, Go Hub Writer

“Make quests more community-based. Battle a friend, send a gift, open a gift, battle a gym together, etc AND have the quests repeatable from the same pokestop so people can gather together at a fixed location rather than run around looking for more quests.”

  • Dare, Go Hub Writer, Discord Moderator

“Maybe a small increase in normal spawns to help get the Pokémon needed to get the great and nice throws. The egg quest should be thrown away as well. Quests restocking every hour would be nice for people with few stops by them.”

  • Community, Floofiest Discord Moderator

“Only way it could have been better would have been 1) Holding it warmer weather (spring/fall instead of summer/winter for the hemispheres of the world). I was playing with it being 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside and 2) Niantic could have made the quests easier like 10 nice and 5 great curves or something.”

  • Rogue, Discord Moderator

“Providing more diverse research tasks, having the hatch or walk time decreased, pokémon spawn increase in general for 3 hours, resetting spinners(with same or different tasks) after completed (for the majority WALKING in one area).”

  • Juliet, Discord Moderator

“Well there’s a couple of things, one is increasing the time window, another could be simply bringing the shiny rates higher, and finally making the missions a bit easier, it would be a bit difficult to find the right balance between all of them, but I do think there is one and if Niantic can find it, this event will surely because as popular as Community Day.”

  • Josh Provines, Go Hub Writer

“A greater variety of tasks and faster to complete.”

  • Ali, Discord Moderator

“First of all, add more quests, or even special research like for Spiritomb during Halloween, then add wild spawns and finally add an unlockable bonus like double XP if [a certain number] of feebas was caught worldwide (for example).”

  • 123321Mario, Discord Moderator

“Quests can be easier, i.e: Make 3 Great Throws/Make 5 Nice throws/Earn 1 buddy candy Shiny rate could be increased. If those requirements don’t get implemented, I’d suggest a wider time frame (5 hours, as an example). One last thing: “Hatch 1 egg” quest (the one that I disliked the most) could be replaced with a “Spin x Pokéstops/Gyms”, maybe “Spin 10 Pokéstops/Gyms” imo.”

  • ASilvaSLB, Discord Moderator

“Make it last longer with more variety of quests. Hardcore shiny wanters will be able to play the whole time and get a shiny. Regular players will have more time and more chances to catch some. And don’t reward driving, reward walking (I’m a driving player).”

  • BinetCauchy, Go Hub Writer

“Either change the quests and make them more feasible or give us an entire weekend and keep the same quests.”

  • Fitz City, Go Hub Writer

“They should’ve made the quests a little easier, and shiny rates a little higher. Not many people actually got one.”

  • Papa Jorro, Go Hub Writer

Final Thoughts

This event, though not received well by many, has room for improvement. We are not sure if we can expect to see an event again like this in the future, but if we do see one, we hope that they take into account our, and all of the community’s, different types of feedback and possible changes to make the event more enjoyable.
