During the Nintendo Spotlight at E3 today, The Pokémon Company has revealed that a new Pokémon main series game is under development for the Nintendo Switch.

It’s not yet clear when the game is to be released, but TPC’s President Tsunekazu Ishihara shared that the game “may not release for more than a year”.

This news comes as complete surprise following the recent Pokémon Direct held by Nintendo, where two new main series games were announced for Nintendo 3DS. It’s hard to argue with getting more content, especially after Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon received lackluster reception from the fans.

The announcement has since been confirmed by the official @Pokémon account on Twitter:

This announcement was interpreted in two ways by the audience and media outlets:

  • either Game Freak did not expect the Ultra Sun/Moon outrage or
  • Game Freak very well knew that the outrage will come and went ahead to announce a new title on E3

Up to this point, it’s not known what the game will be called, what Switch functionalities it will use or how big it is going to be.

In any case, we’ll be covering both Ultra Sun/Moon and the upcoming Switch title on the Hub, with our regular Pokémon GO coverage. Life is too short to skip on any Pokémon GO, ain’t that right Magikarp Jump?

Uh. How does a game that’s not even released yet have poor reception? We know nothing about it, people are just salty because it’s not on switch and it’s not a d/p remake

In the exact same way we’d know granny with cancer on chemotherapy isn’t going to bench press you 100 times – past experience and the ability to use logic.

We know the limits of the 3DS tech and S/M were already at them.

Sure, they were fine enough, but we know this because many things were removed or left unfinished to make them possible on the 3DS. US/UM really can’t do anymore than they did.

It can’t even add stuff because at this point in the 3DS life, it’s doubtful they’d be manufacturing the 8GB cards for likely only these games and S/M were at the limit in terms of file size too. 4GB card – some small unsable space on card – game size of ~3.2BG = basically no space to add things.

It’s fine to also have them on the 3DS but these should be ported to the Switch as well.

And this announcement doesn’t so anything for that. People weren’t just looking forward to a new Gen on the Switch, they wanted a non-gimped version of these.

And despite what idiots say, there is indeed precedence for just that.

Crystal was ONLY on the GBC whereas you could play all of those preceding it on the GB/P meaning many players probably had to upgrade to play it IN THE SAME GENERATION. Not to mention B2/W2 which had features that only the DSi/XL and 3DS could use despite most of the systems sold being the DS lite. you could play it on them just fine but there was incentive to upgrade even without them only be on the DSi/XL or 3DS.

That’s what a Switch version would be for US/UM – incentive to upgrade for additional features without leaving out the main system base entirely.

And it makes even more sense when you consider even ALL of the follow ups, even those released after the new system could be played on the next one. DS released before Emerald, but you could play it on the DS/lite if you wanted. 3DS released before B2/W2 but you could play them on both.

The Switch doesn’t have that capability this time so it is perfectly resonable to expect them to take a couple months at most to make a Switch version of them.
