Entei Field Research: everything you need to know
Entei Field Research Reward

Trainers, we have a an official confirmation that the September Pokemmon GO research breakthrough will feature the Fire beast Entei! It was a coin toss between Entei and Suicune, and Entei has been chosen, alongside quests that will feature other Fire type Pokémon.

This does put a damper on the fact that, if Entei had been in October, one could have managed to work the dates to get 5 Entei breakthroughs, just like with Raikou, however an Entei is an Entei regardless, any of them ought to be appreciated.

Let’s dive into this!

Quick facts

  • Entei is available from September 1st, 1 PM PST until the end of the month.
  • Additional Field Research quests will become available, featuring Fire type Pokemon
  • Entei is among the strongest Fire types currently available in Pokemon GO
  • Field Research Entei CP range: 1265 – 1447 CP
  • Best moves:
    • Fire Spin Fire
    • Overheat Fire

Not about time zones and Entei availability

Remember trainers, the time it becomes available is September 1st, 1 PM PST, so just because it is September 1st in your time zone does not mean it is available. If you want a Entei, wait until after the above mentioned time before claiming a breakthrough, otherwise you will get another Raikou.

On the flip side, if you want another Raikou, you have until the time above to claim the breakthrough, otherwise after 1 PM PST your box will be a Entei.

Note: you can complete the Field Research required to unlock your seventh day bonus, just don’t open the box if you want an Entei. The time when you open the box determines which Pokemon you will get, regardless of when you actually start the encounter.

Entei in the meta game

For a complete overview of Entei’s usefulness in the meta, and a comparison with the rest of the Pokemon GO’s legendary beast trio, you can check our guide here: Raikou, Entei, and Suicune in the Current and Future Meta. You may also check our database listing on it to check available moves and encounter CPs.

Entei is arguably the second best Fire type in the game, with access to great moves and considerable bulk. While it doesn’t have the attacking power of Moltres, it has more bulk and more TDO (Total Damage Output) in the long run. Blast Burn Charizard has also overshadowed Entei (that shiny, that damned shiny!), but Entei’s bulk is still a force to be reckoned with.

Gen IV has some interesting additions like Magmortar, but it remains to be seen how that will influence Entei’s placement.

Entei can be a popular choice in attacking gyms since it has access to Flamethrower, a two bar Fire-type move that can be often used in Gyms.
