Gyarados Raid Counters Guide

Posted in

The fabled Gyarados is now a level 4 Raid boss in Pokémon GO! With 33893 Raid Boss CP and a Water and Flying typing.  Gyarados is double weak to Electric-type Pokémon, so Raikou, Electivire, Magnezone, Zapdos, Luxray & Jolteon are your best bets.

Gyarados can be duoed under the right conditions and the right counters.  However, it is recommended that you use between 3 to 5 high-level trainers, and 6 to 8 lower level trainers.

In this guide, we will cover what the best counters to take down Gyarados are, what the best strategy is, and what CPs you should watch out for after your successful battle.

Gyarados can be caught with the following Combat Values:

  • 1855 – 1937 CP no weather boost
  • 2319 – 2422 CP boosted by Windy or Rainy

Overview

Gyarados

Water Flying

Max CP 3391

Counters

Gyarados Counters
Gyarados
Supreme Gyarados raid counters
Raikou Thunder Shock Electric Wild Charge Electric
Raikou is your best option, strong and beefy it can take hits and deal out tons of damage.
Electivire Thunder Shock Electric Wild Charge Electric
Electivire is on the same level as Raikou, just a little less bulky.  It can deal out tons of damage but it will faint a little quicker.
Magnezone Spark Electric Wild Charge Electric
Behind Raikou and Electivire is Magnezone, but it’s not a far drop-off.  Solid third option.
Great Gyarados raid counters
Zapdos Thunder Shock Electric Thunderbolt Electric
Luxray Spark Electric Wild Charge Electric
Jolteon Thunder Shock Electric Thunderbolt Electric
Decent Gyarados Counters
Mewtwo Psycho Cut Psychic Thunderbolt Electric
Eelektross Spark Electric Thunderbolt Electric
Zebstrika Spark Electric Wild Charge Electric
Melmetal Thunder Shock Electric Thunderbolt Electric

As you can see, Electric Pokémon are by far your best option.  If you are short on Electric types, Pokemon with Electric-type moves such has Attack Deoxys, Mew, Porygon-Z, Speed Deoxys are decent options.

Gyarados Moveset Analysis

Gyarados can have the following moves in a raid battle and when captured:

Fast Moves Charge Moves
  • Waterfall Water
  • Bite Dark
  • Dragon Breath Dragon
  • Hydro Pump Water
  • Crunch Dark
  • Outrage Dragon
  • Twister Dragon

Honestly, none of Gyarados’ move combinations are overly scary.  The combination of Bite and Outrage shows as the highest “Time to Win”, however, none of the movesets cover the Electric types that you should be using.  So there’s nothing to be concerned about.

Good luck Trainers!  Stay safe out there.
