How to evolve Inkay into Malamar in Pokémon GO

Posted in

Inkay and Malamar debuted during the Pokémon GO Psychic Spectacular 2021 Event, making the new Psychic and Dark typed squid-like Pokémon the newest addition to Pokémon GO.

Inkay has a special evolution process, unlike anything we had in Pokémon GO before. This is a quick guide on how to get Inkay and Malamar, and how to evolve Inkay in Pokémon GO.

How to get Inkay in Pokémon GO

Inkay

Inkay can be obtained via the following methods during the Pokémon GO Psychic Spectacular 2021 Event:

  • In the wild
  • From one-star raids
  • From a photobomb (once per day)
  • Completing the timed-research quest
  • Completing field-research tasks

Outside of the event, Inkay is available in the wild.

How to evolve Inkay into Malamar in Pokémon GO

Malamar

As some Trainers that played Pokémon X and Y would know, the way to evolve Inkay into Malamar was to physically turn their Nintendo DS system upside-down when it levels.

Possibly one of the most unique ways a Pokémon can be evolved. In Pokémon GO, you have to do the same.

Here are the evolution requirements for Malamar:

  • You need 50 Inkay Candy
  • Turn your phone upside-down and press evolve

Yes, you actually have to rotate your phone so the screen is upside down.

Malamar in Pokémon GO

Inkay’s evolution, Malamar, is a dual Dark and Psychic type Pokémon with a max CP of 2667 (at level 50), 177 attack, 165 defense, and 200 stamina.

Many battlers that compete in GO Battle League and Silph Arena tournaments will be excited to acquire Malamar since the combination of Its dual typing paired with its diverse moveset creates a powerful core breaker in many team compositions.

Malamar
Max CP at Level 40 2359 | Max CP at Level 50 2,667
ATK 177 DEF 165 HP 200
Weak to Strong Against
Bug Fairy Psychic

Malamar has access to a variety of moves that can be troublesome for a great deal of Pokémon in the current meta.

Fast Moves Charge Moves
Peck Flying Psybeam Psychic
Psycho Cut Psychic Foul Play Dark
  Super Power Fighting
  Hyper Beam Normal

As we can see, Malamar’s moveset is diverse which provides it with the ability to be able to handle a lot of different matchups that a standard Dark or Psychic type would normally struggle with.

Psycho Cut is a Psychic type Fast Move that deals 5 damage and generates 8 energy. Pairing this with heavy-hitting moves such as Foul Play and Super Power (a Fighting type move on a Psychic type Pokémon!) creates an incredibly strong and spammy Pokémon which will surely wreak havoc among many.
