January 2020 Research Breakthrough Reward

Lapras

From Wednesday, January 1, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Saturday, February 1, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PST (GMT −8), you will be able to catch a Lapras that knows Ice Shard or Ice Beam.  You will be able to encounter Lapras in the 1076 – 1131 CP range from January Research Breakthrough.

Additionally, Lapras caught from the quest “Hatch 7 eggs” has both Ice Shard and Ice Beam. This requires having a saved quest from before the Field Research Breakthrough was changed.

Ice Shard and Ice Beam are not useful in PvE, but in PvP they’re among the best movesets Lapras can have. Lapras is a viable counter to Giratina in the Ultra League, especially if you don’t have a high CP Regice.
