Mega Blastoise Raid Counters Guide

Posted in

Mega Blastoise made its debut as one of the first Mega Pokémon introduced into Pokémon GO. As of now, it is quite a tanky Mega raid bosses and takes on average 4-5 trainers to complete. Mega Blastoise can be duo’d with 2 highly experienced trainers using top tier counters, however, this is not recommended unless you are sure you can complete it.

This pure Water type will be weak to Grass and Electric type Pokémon.

Keep in mind that if you have the opportunity to battle Mega Blastoise in either Clear or Rainy weather, you will be granted with a 20% damage increase which can greatly aid you in battle.

In this guide, we will be diving into the strongest Mega Blastoise counters, tips on how to defeat it and helpful facts about Mega Blastoise.

With that being said, let’s dive straight into it!

Mega Blastoise Raid Counters

Since Shadow Pokémon are extremely expensive to power up and require specific events to remove Frustration with a Charge TM, they will NOT be listed as raid counters in this article.

That being said, if you have the shadow form of a listed raid counter Pokémon powered up and TMed, use it.

Let’s check out the top raid counters for Mega Blastoise:

How to get Mega Blastoise

You cannot catch Blastoise in its mega evolved form from the raid. The mega raid boss is always catchable in its base form and as such, the CP ranges are for a regular Blastoise.

Blastoise can be caught with the following CP values:

  • 1338 –1409 CP at level 20, no weather boost
  • 1673 –1761 CP at level 25 with Rainy weather boost

In order to get Mega Blastoise you will need 200 Mega Energy for the initial evolution, then 40 Mega Energy to evolve the same Blastoise again in the future. If you wait for their ‘cooldown’ period to end, Mega Evolution is free. This cooldown period is shorter the higher mega level your Mega Pokémon is. Mega Energy can be obtained via Mega Blastoise Raids, and once you have evolved Mega Blastoise, you can earn 5 Mega Energy per candy while walking it as your buddy. You can walk any Squirtle, Wartortle or Blastoise to earn Mega Energy, as long as you have previously evolved one to register it to your Mega Pokédex.

Shiny Blastoise

Like all Mega Raid Bosses, you can catch the shiny version of Blastoise from a raid.

Mega Blastoise Moveset Analysis

Fast Moves Charge Moves
  • Water Gun Water
  • Bite Dark
  • Flash Cannon Steel
  • Ice Beam Ice
  • Hydro Pump Water
  • Skull Bash Normal
  • Hydro Cannon* Water

*Denotes a legacy move only available via Elite TM.

Make sure to watch out for Ice Beam when using Grass type counters as it will almost certainly take down your Pokémon in one hit. A good indicator to tell what Charge Move Mega Blastoise and any raid boss will have is to pay attention to the ‘recommended’ Pokémon the game provides you with when entering a raid lobby.

If the game gives you only Electric types and no Grass users, then Mega Blastoise will have Ice Beam. Hydro Pump also has the ability to one shot an Electric type user if you do not perform a dodge to avoid the damage output.

Parting Words

Keep in mind that the Mega Energy needed to Mega evolve a Pokémon decreases with each evolution. This will only work with each individual Pokémon so be sure to Mega evolve your best IV Pokémon to have a discount for further use in future battles.

Good luck taking down Mega Blastoise in raids trainers!
