Mew’s Most Useful Movesets

As many Trainers are now completing their Special Research for Professor Willow and catching Mew, we thought you might like to know which movesets you should be hoping for, to get the most out of this highly versatile Pokémon;

Mew has, by far, the largest and most diverse set of fast and charged moves in Pokémon Go. While there may be better counters to the top tier defenders and raid bosses, Mew’s incredibly large move-pool means that it can still be a viable counter to virtually any Pokémon you choose to pit it against in battle, especially if you’re lacking in certain niche areas of type advantage.

Due to the sheer number of moves Mew can learn, you will need to be well stocked-up on Fast and Charged TMs to land the exact set you want. To recap, here’s the full list:

So let’s go ahead and analyse which moveset types could be useful due to the fact that they will deal at least super effective (1.4x) damage to some of the most powerful Pokémon, as defenders or raid bosses, in the current meta game:

A Dual Dragon or Dragon & Fairy Type Moveset

These dual Dragon or DragonFairy type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Dragonite
• Rayquaza
• Salamence
• Latios
• Latias

A Dual Ice Type Moveset

These dual Ice type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Dragonite (double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Rayquaza (double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Salamence (double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Latios
• Latias
• Lugia
• Zapdos
• Groudon
• Golem
• Rhydon
• Exeggutor

A Dual Fighting Type Moveset

These dual Fighting type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Tyranitar (double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Golem
• Rhydon
• Blissey
• Snorlax
• Regirock
• Regice
• Registeel

A Dual Dark, Bug & Dark, or Ghost & Dark Type Moveset

These GhostDark, BugDark, or dual Dark type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Mewtwo
• Exeggutor (Infestation and Struggle Bug deal double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Latias
• Latios
• Alakazam
• Lugia (Infestation and Struggle Bug deal neutral (1x) damage)
• Metagross (Infestation and Struggle Bug deal neutral (1x) damage)

A Dual Electric Type Moveset

These dual Electric type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Gyarados (double super effective (1.96x) damage)
• Ho-Oh
• Lugia
• Kyogre
• Moltres
• Articuno
• Vaporeon

A Dual Water or Water & Grass Type Moveset

These dual Water or WaterGrass type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Tyranitar
• Groudon
• Golem
• Rhydon

A Fighting & Fire or Fighting & Ground Type Moveset

These FightingFire, or FightingGround type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Regice
• Registeel
• Regirock (Only use the FightingGround moveset)

A Dual Steel Type Moveset

These Steel type movesets will deal 1.4x damage to the following Pokémon:

• Tyranitar
• Golem
• Rhydon
• Regice
• Regirock

A Special Mention For Mew’s Psychic Type Moves

Psychic and Psyshock, are Mew’s only charged moves which will benefit from STAB (same type attack bonus) which means it will deal an additional 1.2x damage to any Pokémon it uses these moves against. This makes these the most useful moves in terms of general use. Psychic type moves however, have little use in the current meta beyond countering strong Fighting type Pokémon like Machamp. The main downside to having Psychic or Psyshock as Mew’s charged move, is that it has no fast moves that will also deal super effective (1.4x) damage to fighting types, so this makes Mew a particularly sub-optimal choice for countering Machamp.

Non-useful Moves

If you feel that can afford to potentially lose a few TMs to make your Mew more useful, these are the moves that you should be getting rid of, as they just aren’t useful enough to make your Mew a good counter to any Pokémon that is currently meta-relevant:

• Poison jab – Poison type moves are only super effective against Grass and Fairy type Pokémon. Apart from Gardevoir and possibly Exeggutor, there aren’t really any other Pokémon it’d be worth using this move against.

• Ancient power, Rock Slide or Stone edge – while Rock type moves are super effective against all of the Flying types, Ice moves are too and also give better coverage over the most common defenders. If there were more Fire type meta Pokémon, a WaterRock moveset may have been quite useful.

• Hyper Beam, Struggle, Pound and Cut – Normal type moves have no advantage over any other types and therefore only makes Mew useful as a generalist team filler, rather than a ‘go-to’ counter – and we already have plenty of them…

Conclusion

Based on type advantage Mew’s most useful moveset counters 11 of the most prominent Pokémon in the current meta game, including being double super effective against all of the FlyingDragon types. If you want to use your Mew as often as possible in battle, and you have plenty of TMs going spare, the most useful moveset is Frost Breath with Ice Beam or Blizzard.
