Overview of Regi Trio’s performance in the Pokémon GO Meta game
registeel regice regirock latios and latias in Pokémon GO

Let’s talk about the Legendary Titans and their meta performance: Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. It’s still not clear when they will appear as raid bosses in Pokémon GO, but when they do, they will be tough customers: all of them possess the standard legendary raid boss health stat (12500), as well as monstrous defence stats.

Our raid guides for the Regi-trio can already be found here (Regice raid guide, Registeel raid guide, and Regirock raid guide), but today we want to talk about something else: the role that the Regi trio plays in the meta game.

Regi trio stats in Pokémon GO

If you’ve been following along on our Database site, you’re probably already aware that Regi stats are all over the place, with mediocre Stamina, relatively low attack and super high Defense. Here’s an overview:

Regi-Trio
Pokémon Stats Combat Power
ATK DEF STA L20 L25 Max
Registeel Steel 143 285 160 1292 1615 2261
Regice Ice 179 356 160 1764 2205 3087
Regirock Rock 179 356 160 1764 2205 3087

Regi trio moves and move sets

These moves are pulled directly from the Game Master file, and although they can change before Regi’s are released, we expect them to stay more or less the same. For each Regi, we advise to go for a Fast Move that benefits from STAB and for a Charge Move that serves your desired purpose.

Regi Titan Moves
Regirock Rock
  • Rock Throw (STAB, fast) Rock
  • Rock Smash (fast) Fighting
  • Stone Edge Rock
  • Zap Cannon Electric
  • Focus Blast Fighting
Registeel Steel
  • Metal Claw (STAB, fast) Steel
  • Rock Smash (fast) Fighting
  • Flash Cannon Steel
  • Hyper Beam Normal
  • Focus Blast Fighting
Regice Ice
  • Frost Breath (STAB, fast) Ice
  • Rock Smash (fast) Fighting
  • Blizzard Ice
  • Earthquake Ground
  • Focus Blast Fighting

If you ask us, we’d roll each Regi with the appropriate double STAB move set. Focus Blast is a flavour full option, a Fighting move that’s shared between all of them, but we seriously doubt that anyone needs a high Defense Fighting equipped attacker these days, especially after we recently had the Battle Showdown Event.

Performance in the meta

Regis attack stats leave much to be desired, and since they cannot currently be placed in gyms, their whopping defense cannot serve them in the one (and potentially only) aspect they would excel at.

As gym attackers, the Regis will be potion-efficient attackers, specifically the likes of Regirock and Regice, creating a cheap way to defeat popular gym defenders such as Dragonite. Simply put, one can continuously attack a gym with the same Regirock and Regice without having to use plenty of revives and potions. However, be aware it will take much longer than with other currently available counters.

When compared to currently available attackers and raiders, the Regi’s don’t look too appealing:

  • Regirock performs worse than existing rock types like Golem, legacy move set Omastar and even Tyranitar. In our simulations, a powered up Regirock with Stone Edge performs worse than a Golem and significantly worse than a potential Smack Down Tyranitar.
  • Regice is a mixed bag as it performs worse than Articuno in every aspect, dies less than a Jynx and is, overall, quite similar to good old Cloyster with Avalanche. It’s a solid choice, but nothing that you haven’t had the chance to power up before. Articuno is still the strongest Ice type in the game.
  • Registeel is floored by Metagross, even considering that Steel is a under-utilised type to begin with. We can’t honestly see any use for it, not even when it’s typing and moves would do wonders. It’s the worst of the bunch

Besides that, coming back to the already mentioned potion and revive efficiency, certain cases allow for the Regis to be used in raids while also still being a viable attacker.

In a match-up against an Articuno, compared to one of the best attackers for it, Golem (without considering much more viable fire types), a perfect Regirock team is still a viable option:

  • Golem has 35 deaths at a TTW (Time to Win) of 752.8 seconds
  • Regirock has 20 deaths at a TTW of 843.4s.

Not a terrible loss of time, and we can see how some folks may value Regirock over Golem for Potion / Revive sake.

Parting words

Without a significant buff, or a new move pool, the Regi-trio will be mainly ignored in raids or used when you want to raid conservatively. Honestly, we’re not sure how we feel about this. The Regis are iconic, it’s a bit disheartening to see them perform so bad, but it is what it is.

If something changes, we’ll update this article and notify you via Twitter and Facebook, but for now, don’t hold your breath for the Titans.

P.S. We have no idea when they’re coming. Sorry?
