Hello Trainers! While Pokémon GO version 0.173.0 slowly started rolling out through the various app stores, Niantic pushed a bunch of text updates in the background! There is a lot to cover in this one from a brand new Wayfarer badge, Pokestop scanning, Friend filtering, a snapshot challenge and more!!

With that said, let’s get into it!
Wayfarer Badge
RESOURCE ID: badge_wayfarer TEXT: Earn {0} Wayfarer Agreements RESOURCE ID: badge_wayfarer_singular TEXT: Earn a Wayfarer Agreement RESOURCE ID: badge_wayfarer_title TEXT: Wayfarer
It looks like Pokémon Go trainers are going to get a badge for Wayfarer agreements like Ingress Agents already have. I’ve seen this mentioned on Reddit a lot, I for one am happy to see this finally make its way into Pokémon Go.
This is what the badge looks like in Ingress, for those that don’t play.
Snapshot Challenge
It looks like a bunch of quests for a new Snapshot challenge, with a task for each type of Pokémon. Credit to Orange Heart for the infographic.
Friend Filters
RESOURCE ID: filter_friend_key_giftable TEXT: giftable RESOURCE ID: filter_friend_key_interactable TEXT: interactable RESOURCE ID: filter_friend_key_lucky TEXT: lucky RESOURCE ID: filter_friend_key_rank TEXT: friendlevel
Finally!! We’re going to be able to filter our friends and search for only the ones who can accept gifts!! Interactable, Lucky and Friendlevel are aslo options.
Custom Incense
RESOURCE ID: daily_encounter_tutorial_dialogue_1 TEXT: Hey there, {0}! Recently, I’ve been working on a special kind of Incense, and I’ve gone ahead and equipped it for you. Now you’ll be sure to find a Pokémon appearing just for you every day! RESOURCE ID: incenseordinary.1_description TEXT: Incense with a mysterious fragrance that lures wild Pokémon to your location for 30 minutes. Its appearance changes when attracting specific Pokémon.
This appears to be a regular incense, just with an orange colour when it’s attracting specific Pokémon? Or maybe this involves the other types of incense that have been datamined in the past?
Bulk Powerup Warning
RESOURCE ID: pokemon_info_powerup_confirmation_2 TEXT: Powering up this Pokémon will exceed the maximum CP for the {0}.
As mentioned in the APK breakdown, you’ll get a warning when you’re going to power up a Pokémon past the Great league and Ultra league cutoffs.
Bonus Research Task Deletion
RESOURCE ID: quest_remove_bonus_challenge_desc TEXT: You’ll receive another tomorrow.
This looks like for when you delete your free bonus research, a message saying you’ll get another one tomorrow.
PokeStop Scans
This appears to be a system similar to what has already been introduced in Ingress, the purpose of it is still unclear. However, it probably involves Niantic working on new features, or improving their map of Points of Interest across the world.
Here is an excellent explanation on how it works in Ingress. https://community.ingress.com/en/discussion/9558/portal-scanning
Speculation is it will work similarly in Pokémon Go. This will require another update to the game to function, so it’s likely this is in its early stages. Don’t expect this soon, but its interesting stuff nonetheless.

RESOURCE ID: titan_poi_ar_data_thank_you_upload_now TEXT: Thank you for your contribution Your PokéStop scan will upload in the background.
This is a big one, these scans will likely take up a lot of data. So the game will ask if you want to upload it after the scan or later when you are on Wi-Fi.
Warnings
RESOURCE ID: titan_poi_ar_data_warning_too_short TEXT: Scan must be more than {0} seconds RESOURCE ID: titan_poi_ar_video_exit TEXT: Are you sure you want to exit? Your scan will be deleted. RESOURCE ID: titan_settings_ar_upload_exit_warning TEXT: This will cancel remaining uploads. Are you sure? RESOURCE ID: titan_settings_ar_upload_failed TEXT: PokéStop Scan Upload Failed
Warnings surrounding the process. Your scan is too short, you’re exiting too early, etc
Disabling the Feature
RESOURCE ID: titan_settings_ar_disable_warning_msg TEXT: If you disable PokéStop scan, you will lose all scans that are not uploaded yet. RESOURCE ID: titan_settings_ar_disable_warning_title TEXT: Are you sure you want to delete all recorded scans? You can disable the feature, or clear all your existing scans.
Conclusions and Speculation
A lot going on today!! Update, and a text push! Niantic’s been busy!!
Wayfarer badge hype!! I am close to 3000 agreements myself, so hopefully this badge is retroactive and includes all of the agreements that trainers already have! If not, we’ll have to grind out more!
Snapshot challenge sounds like another “Stay at Home” event that Niantic is working on, something you can do from the comfort of your bed or your couch.
Custom incenses are interesting, probably revolving around the incense event that’s coming up.
I am excited to see how this new POI scanning rolls out into Pokémon go. It seems very interesting to me that Niantic is looking to build 3D models of all of the POI’s out there.
What do you think about the new POI scanning? Let me know!
As always, stay safe out there trainers!
