Ingress “Limbo” portals are getting fixed: influx of PokéStops and Gyms expected

Posted in

Trainers, Niantic has shared that they are implementing a fix for Ingress portals that are stuck in the “limbo” state, which should roll out slowly over the next few days and weeks. As a result, a number of submitted portals that were not accepted or reject will see have their status resolved.

Ingress players have an in-game option to submit portal candidates, which then end up in OPR (Operation Portal Recon), where other Ingress players vote on whether or not the portal candidate will appear in game. With time, the votes accumulate and the portal is either approved or denied. However, a large number of portals was stuck in the OPR “limbo” — a curious state where there are enough votes for a decision to be made about a portal’s status, but it hasn’t happened.

Although NIA has advised patience with the new fix, players are already reporting successful portal additions and approvals across the board (source: /r/ingress):

I can confirm this. 2 portals accepted after 138 days, another one after 93 days… Is it a dream?

As Ingress portals are imported as PokéStops and Gyms on a daily basis, we’re expecting a large influx of new Pokémon GO Points of Interest over the next 10 days. It’s too early to say how many PokéStops will be created as a result of this, but if player’s excitement is to be believed, limbo portals were a major issue on the OPR network.

We have to say, Niantic has been on top of things lately: handing out perm bans and shadow bans in Pokémon GO, improving Portal submissions in Ingress, improving communication and content delivery across the board.

Parting words

Although we don’t cover Ingress in almost any capacity at the Hub, we want to express our gratitude to Ingress players who read our content — without you, there would be no Pokémon GO.

We want to thank you for your hard work, for submitting and reviewing portals, and more than anything, for creating the infrastructure upon which Ingress Prime, Pokémon GO and Wizards Unite are built.

Stay awesome.
