Trainers, the official numbers and stats behind Pokémon GO’s first Earth Day Cleanup event are live! As shared in John Hanke’s blog post on the official Niantic blog today, trainers have managed to do the following:

  • More than 4200 trainers has participated in 68 cleanup events across 19 countries
  • In total, around 4300 kilograms and debris (approx 5 tons with today’s PR statement numbers) have been collected

In addition, Mission Blue, the organization founded by legendary ocean explorer and activist Dr. Sylvia Earle, received more than $5,000 in donations from players and a $250,000 donation from Niantic and The Pokémon Company.

This donation will be used by Mission Blue to launch a Hope Spot expedition to Palau in the Fall of 2018 to assess the long term viability of this island nation’s unique approach to marine conservation and ecotourism. The funds will also scale up Mission Blue’s outreach efforts by bringing on more storytellers to work with Hope Spot communities in communicating their unique story out to a global audience.

Hanke shared his thoughts about his recent encounter with Earle, hinting at a possibility of more collaborations in the future:

“There are some people in this world who devote every day of the year to the Earth. Legendary ocean explorer and activist Dr. Sylvia Earle is one of them. I was honored to work with her and her network of like-minded scientists to create Google Oceans. I’m thrilled to be working with her again. I had a chance to catch up with her over the weekend at the EARTHxOcean conference in Dallas earlier this weekend to discuss innovative ways we can use technology to spread awareness and solve real issues happening around the world today!”

Here’s Earle delivering her famous lecture about oceans and their importance:

Parting words

Remember, dear reader, that you are what you leave behind. We have grown a lot as a community, especially when comparing this recent clean up with the madness of summer of 2016. Be kind to each other, but also to the planet, the paths you tread and the places you visit. Ecology is not a myth, it’s not a hoax and it’s not going away anywhere soon.

We are incredibly proud to be a part of a community that cares about the planet around us. Five tons may not sound a lot, but those five tons are no longer out there, and it is all because of us.

Thank you.
