Tencent says they’re working on a new Pokemon game with The Pokemon Company

Posted in

According to Reuters, China’s Tencent Games said on Monday that its Timi Studio will work with The Pokemon Company, a firm partially owned by Japan’s Nintendo, on developing a new game. No further details have been shared – we don’t know what type of game it is, which platforms it will be distributed on and will it be available internationally.

Timi Studio Group is a video game developer company owned by Tencent Holdings and is responsible for developing Call of Duty: Mobile and Arena of Valor, among other games they developed for the Asian market. We’ll add more details as they become available.

The calm before the storm

This is the latest piece of news in a long string of recently announced Pokemon games. It seems like The Pokemon Company is strongly aggressively diversifying their portfolio in 2019 and 2020. Here’s a list of recently announced games and Pokemon projects that go beyond the usual console audience:

Pokemon Sleep is a new project that is coming out in 2020, aimed at tracking user’s time sleeping and integrating it with a game play loop. This information was shared during the: Pokémon Press Conference 2019: Two New Games, Sleep, new Clothes and More

Pokemon Masters is a mobile game that’s coming out this summer and is fully oriented on casual Pokemon battles. Masters seems like one of those games that will stay around for a longer time, as the platform allows for early content expansion. You can read more about it in our previous articles: Pokemon Masters is Coming to Android and iOS this Summer and New Pokemon Masters Trailer Shows Co-Op Battles, No Release Date Yet

Pokemon Home is a brand new cloud service that allows cross-platform Pokemon exchange and synchronization between Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. Our investigation suggests that TPCI is heavily banking on Home becoming the center piece of all upcoming Pokemon titles. For example, Pokemon from all generations can be stored in Home, but not all of them will be usable in every game (follows along the reduction of National Dex in Sword and Shield). Pokemon Home is coming out on 2020, it’s not tied to a particular game and it allows trading.

We’ll keep you updated on the state of this new project. We don’t know if it’s the previously announced Detective Pikachu game, but it’s unlikely given TIMI Studio’s lack of experience on the platform.
