Conceptual Pokémon Fusion, July 2018 : Venustoise

Welcome Trainers, to the first article in my series of conceptual additions to Pokémon GO, in conjunction with the talented team over at Fusion Evolution.

In my foundation article Collaboration of Concepts : Fusion Evolution in Pokémon GO, I cover the mechanics of how a fusion is calculated. I will refer to these mechanics in this article but I wont be going into granular detail.

WARNING : These articles are 100% Fan-art. They are not intended to be a serious suggestion. I appreciate that these are not everyone’s cup of tea but I hope you will enjoy reading this piece of fiction.

Brief History of Fusion

Fun fact now, Pokémon fusion was born in the anime, right at the very start of the franchise. Yes it’s true, and has lead to a huge number of fan creations over the years.

Venustoise is a Pokémon that debuted on episode 20 of the Pokémon anime, titled The Ghost of Maiden’s Peak. Its components, which are Blastoise and Venusaur, were created by a Gastly.

VenustoiseWhen Gastly was confronted by Ash’s Squirtle and Bulbasaur. The Gastly fused a Blastoise and Venusaur together, thus making this Pokémon Fusion. It spawned an interest of people making their own Pokémon Fusions.

In Generation 5, the legendary Pokémon Kyurem was introduced, along with a new mechanic to fuse it with the other two legendary dragons introduced (Zekrom and Reshiram). This fusion to changes Kyurem’s appearance, type, abilities, stats and movesets.

As a fun aside to my usual concepts, I thought it would be interesting to delve into the fan-made world of Pokémon Fusion and see how this combination would work if they made it into Pokémon GO (it will never happen).

Venustoise Guide

Pokémon GO Venustoise is a dual typed Water and Poison type Pokémon, and is arguably the first of countless Fusion Pokémon to be created since the games birth in 1995. It is a blend of the Generation 1 Pokémon, Venusaur and Blastoise.

Possibly obtained by evolving a Wartortle with 100 Bulbasaur candy (or vice versa) and having a Ghost type as the last wild Pokémon encountered.

Venustoise has a MAX CP of 3010, with an ATK of 208, DEF of 227 and STA of 178

In this chart, we will look at Venustoise’s stats compared to some of the other prominent Water and Poison types in the game, across all released generations in the main series.

Venustoise’s Attack and Defense stats are nothing to be ashamed of, but its Stamina lets it down. Including every other Pokémon up to and including Generation 7, excluding Mega-evolution, it comes in as the #10 Water type.

Amazingly it comes in as the #2 Poison type, outstripping even the mighty Roserade who will hold the title of King Poison until the introduction of Nihilego, an Ultra Beast who arrives with Generation 7.

Venustoise maybe be the strongest Poison type, conceptually, however they don’t have much type coverage or prominence in the current meta game. With dual Poison type moves, Venustoise be a useful attacker against the stronger Grass and Fairy types, like Tangrowth, Gardevoir, and Exeggutor. The double-edge sword being that Tangrowth and Exeggutor will typically run with Grass move sets, and Gardevoir as a Psychic can also employ moves which would be super-effective against our Fusion.

Defensively, Venustoise has resistance to Bug, Fire, Fairy, Poison, Steel, Fighting, Ice and Water type moves, but a weakness to Electric, Ground, Psychic type moves

Venustoise’s Potential Movepool

Conceptually, following the rules of the Fusion Evolution mechanic, this Pokémon has access to all the moves of its composite parts.

Below is a list of all the moves Blastoise and Venusaur have access to:
I have not included Exclusive Moves from Community Days.

If/when abilities are introduced into Pokémon Go, Venustoise would have access to a Fusion Ability, which would be a combination of the abilities available to its constitutional parts.

The ability which is allocated within the Fusion Evolution Database is called Sun Bath, which is a fusion of Chlorophyll and Rain Dish

Pokémon
Ability Ability Desc
Venusaur GrassPoison Chlorophyll When Sunny, the Pokémon’s Speed doubles. However, Speed will not double on the turn weather becomes Sunny.
DNA Splicers Venustoise
Water Poison
Sun Bath Under Sunny or Rainy, Speed is doubled and regains 1/8 of max health at the end of the turn. Ignores Sun’s Water Debuff.
Blastoise Water Rain Dish If Rainy weather is in effect, recovers 1/16th max Hit Points at the end of the turn.

Weather Influence on Venustoise

With weaknesses to three different moves types, Venustoise has to take into account of the weather. In weather that has pros, use Venustoise all you want and let it tear through its enemies, but in the weather with cons, avoid using it against foes that may have super-effective moves.

The chart below will help you visualize what weather is beneficial or harmful for Venustoise.

Weather Pros Cons
Sunny Boosts its potential Grass moves Boosts defenders’ super effective Ground moves
Partly Cloudy
Cloudy Boosts its potential Poison moves
Rainy Boosts its potential Water moves Boosts defenders’ super effective Electric moves
Fog Boosts its potential Dark moves
Windy Boosts defenders’ super effective Psychic moves
Snow Boosts its potential Ice and/or Steel moves

Venustoise Sprites

So what does a Fusion Pokémon look like? Fortunately the Fusion Evolution Team has this covered with a large collection of sprites created by their talented artists.

Normal Shiny
Pokémon GO Venusaur
Pokémon GO Blastoise

Is this even achievable…

Well, no. As much as I would like my namesake, or any other Fusion, to make it into Pokémon GO or the main series, we have to be realistic that everything conceptualists do is considered as Fan-art. While its an acceptable and often fun medium it will unfortunately never make it into Pokémon GO.

Let’s wrap this up

I hope you enjoyed this concept, and I hope so share more in the future with our friends over at Fusion Evolution. While my usual concepts focus on modifying the existing in-game mechanics or the Overworld, this is about adding an entirely new dimension and game play outside of Niantics control.

A huge thank you to the team at Fusion Evolution for helping me with this conceptual entry into the Pokémon GO Fusion database.

Next month we will bring you an entry nominated by the team.

If you wish to join the discussion at Fusion Evolution, you can join the discussion at their Discord Channel

Here’s hoping Niantic is listening. Expanding content beyond the current game, can only enhance the experience for both the solo player and the overall community.
