Abomasnow PvP Spotlight: Great League

With the newly updated moves for the start of the Season 3 of GO Battle League Abomasnow seems to be the biggest winner. Before Season 3 it was just another Razor Leafer with Charge Moves that require a lot of energy. And right now, in Season 3, it’s one of the best meta destroyers. Or dare I say, maybe the new meta of Great League GBL.

Let us take a look into what makes Abomasnow a deadly addition to your Great League PvP line-up.

Stats

Abomasnow has the following stat distribution:

Abomasnow GrassIce
Max CP 2362
ATK 178 DEF 158 HP 207
Weak to Strong Against
Fire x2
Bug Fighting Flying Poison Rock Steel
Electric Grass Ground Water

Moveset

Abomasnow can learn the following moves in Pokémon Go:

Fast Moves Charged Moves
  • Powder Snow Ice
  • Razor Leaf Grass
  • Weather Ball Ice
  • Energy Ball Grass
  • Blizzard Ice
  • Outrage Dragon

Moveset analysis

With the new moves, not only did Niantic buff one of Abomasnow’s best Fast Attacks, but they also gave it another great Charge Attack in the form of Weather Ball Ice. Abomasnow can finally choose between a strong damage dealing fast move like Razor Leaf, or go with Powder Snow, which charges energy fairly and now deals even more damage than before.

Fast moves

Powder Snow is the obvious choice for the current Great League meta. Powder Snow will not only charge energy fairly quickly, but will also deal super effective damage to all Dragon, Flying, Grass and Ground type Pokémon.

Razor Leaf is one of the hardest-hitting fast moves in the game. It hit with massive damage on opponents that are weak to Grass type. However, it gains energy really slowly and can pull back Abomasnow from potentially winning certain matchups.

Charge moves

Charge moves are in a similar situation. The newly added Weather Ball Ice requires only 35 energy (5 Powder Snows for Weather Ball), which is great. It’s a low cost charge move that deals super effective damage to a number of the meta relevant Pokémon. Weather Ball is great for baiting as well. Just what the doctor ordered!

Your second charge move should be Energy Ball Grass. It’s not great, but it’s still a solid Grass type Charge Attack that combos well with Weather Ball. It deals super effective damage to Ground, Rock and most importantly Azumarill, oops, I mean, Water type Pokémon.

Blizzard is also a great move that was recently buffed and now does even more damage, but with Weather Ball, you don’t really need Blizzard as your Charge Attack.

Outrage is an okay move, but not needed anymore as you are already doing super effective damage to Dragon type Pokémon with your Ice type attacks.

Performance in the Great League

Look at this list:

Azumarill Tropius Venusaur
Meganium Shiftry Whiscash
Cresselia

That’s the list of Pokémon Abomasnow can easily win against now. Most notable name on that list is for sure Azumarill, against whom you can win with just straight using Energy Ball every time, no need to bait the shields.

Farming energy against some Grass type Pokémon is even easier now with buffed Powder Snow and will give you more energy for the next Pokémon matchup.

Abomasnow can win against the team of Azumarill, Altaria and Grass type Pokémon on its own.

Abomasnow really hates Fire, so Alolan Marowak is not your friend. Abomasnow also doesn’t like Steel types like Registeel and Melmetal, and it losses to Galarian Stunfisk. Luckily, you can spam a lot of Weather Balls and sometimes even win 2-shield scenarios.

Counter Fighting users like Vigoroth, Deoxys Defense, Medicham and others can also beat Abomasnow with their supper effective Fast Attacks, so be on the lookout for those.

Should you unlock a second charge move for Abomasnow?

Abomasnow needs both charge moves in other to counter all of those meta relevant Pokémon like Azumarill and others. As such, Abomasnow’s ideal moveset is Powder Snow paired with Ice-type Weather Ball and Energy Ball.

Conclusion

Abomasnow used to be a spice pick in Great League, but has managed to become one of the most meta relevant Pokémon in just a matter of days. A tank with decent stats, powerful moveset and good matchups!

Abomasnow is a great addition to your PvP team. It fulfils many useful roles that include: significant damage output, shield baiting and anti-Azu-Altaria-Grass Pokémon.

While it does have to worry about a good number of Pokémon, it can definitely put up an impressive outing in most battle situations.
