PvP Move Stats and Changes

With the addition of Trainer battles in Pokémon GO there was a lot of changes behind the scenes. Not only did Type Effectiveness change, but all of the Fast and Charge moves were reworked for Trainer battles and PvP by giving them new stats and new mechanics.

Redditor named u/ClamusChowderus was the first one that extracted all of the new moves stats and made spread sheets with all of the new information. Let’s take a look at all of the changes to see what could be the meta in Pokemon GO PvP.

Fast Moves

Fast Moves duration for PvP is measured in “turns” where every turn lasts 0.5 seconds, where for Raids and Gym battles duration of the move is counted in seconds. Now, for PvP, we’ll have “Damage per Turn” and “Energy per Turn”.

Clearly the best Fast move in the game is Counter Fighting that deals 4 damage per turn and gives you 3.5 energy per turn. In terms of damage dealt per turn it’s closely followed by Dragon Breath Dragon and Rock Throw Rock.

On the other hand, if you want to quickly use your Charge move best options would probably be Mud Shot Ground, Thunder Shock Electric, Psycho Cut Psychic, Vine Whip Grass or Bubble Water.

Notice how there is a lot of balanced moves that deal pretty good damage and give you a decent energy per turn.

Charge Moves

Charge moves in Trainer battles and PvP don’t have duration, that means all of them take the same amount of time to fire. That’s makes them easy to rank in “Damage per Energy” category.

But you have to be pretty careful and take in mind that you have a real person on the other side when playing PvP. Sometimes you don’t want to keep spamming that Fast move while enemy is constantly firing Charge moves.

Before we look at every Charge move in the game let’s look at one example. When you have to decide between two of Deoxys Charge moves, Hyper Beam Normal and Psycho Boost Psychic, if you would only look at the DPE (Damage per Energy), you would say that Hyper Beam is superior. But keep in mind that sometimes you’ll be able to fire 3 Psycho Boosts and only one Hyper Beam, so some of the energy will be wasted if your Pokemon faints and doesn’t charge it’s Charge move. And also, Charge moves that need a lot of energy are easier to read by your opponent and can be easily avoided by Protect Sheild.
