Discontinued support for iOS 8 has been announced in an official Pokémon GO Support post published today. As stated in the original post, Trainers using iOS 8 devices won’t be able to play Pokémon GO after 11/20/2017.

The recommended course of action for players using iOS is to upgrade to iOS 9 and above, otherwise they won’t be able to play the game. iOS 8 was initially released in 2014, with several new iOS releases after.

According to Apple’s official statistics, less than 10% of iOS users are using iOS 8 and 9, while iOS 10 is used by 38% and iOS 11 by 52% of users. Niantic has also acknowledged these numbers, stating the following: “We periodically update our supported device requirements to focus on the devices our player base use.”

Niantic has gone on record and explained why are they gutting iOS 8 support:

By removing support for iOS 8, we are able to streamline our development process and focus resources on supporting newer operating systems and technologies.

With that being said, it’s expected that this will be a smooth discontinuation with nothing major expected for that date besides it. However, players speculating that the aforementioned date could be more significant than we think.

Is Niantic planning something for the 11/20?

According to boomeu1 (via reddit), it could be possible that Niantic is planning something for the 20th. We’re sharing his (or hers?) full speculation below:

How I see this:

Generally speaking, it‘s of course a benefit to developers for their app or game to support more devices (with an older OS), because it means more devices are able to play/use it, thus generating more revenue.

However, with every OS update, more options within the programming become available to developers; options that may not run on older OS versions. As a developer, you can then choose to either not use those options, enable them only on certain devices (those that are able to use them), or discontinue support for devices without the option to run your game or app (thus forcing users to either update their OS, or stop using it altogether).

It‘s quite likely that Niantic is planning something for the 20th, because it‘s a date that they chose themselves to discontinue the support of iOS 8. They aren‘t being forced to do so by Apple, for example. Instead they will – most likely – release an update for Pokémon GO on that date.

Oh boy! Let’s get smeargle up in here with a thanksgiving event.

Event: Double XP and “plentiful” pokestops and maybe double candy

    • Simone Amoruso

      Hope for Ho-oh too

      • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Yeah. Ho-Oh too would be great. As long as it’s not an EX raid. Probably will however because Niantic is Niantic!

    • M Tsæl

That sort of event does not require a major coding change: if this article’s suppositions are right, it might suggest that the game mechanics are going to change (possibly introducing new features? such as pokemon abilities, PvP, a fight mechanism more “aligned” to the main serie games? I don’t know, these are just my speculations).

      • Marco De Freitas

All your speculations does not require major coding change neither x)

        • M Tsæl

When they reworked the earlier gym system it surely took some more work on the codes, if compared to the activation on some event rewards such as x2 XP or changing the chances of pokemon encounters.

        • Naideth

I wonder if it has something to do with the Unity Engine upgrade.

      • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

What I said is what I’m expecting for an event. Updates will now have more potential due to the drop of iOS 8. Every update to OS gives more potential to games

  • Joe1407

I have saved my eggs and have 30 of them. I am ready for 4x XP.

    • Curtis Beales

4x XP!? Keep dreaming 2x is more likely.

      • Tor-Iver Sørensen

I think he meant lucky eggs.. You can’t save up more than 9 eggs to hatch.

        • Curtis Beales

I know that’s what he meant, I wasn’t questioning that…I get now that double XP combined with a lucky egg is 4x XP. I thought he meant just straight up 4 times as much XP as normal.

          • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Quad XP and a lucky egg. THAT would be a “plentiful” event!

        • Joe1407

Yes I bought event package for the raid pass and saved for a 2x xp time.

      • Joe1407

2x XP and drop an egg = 4x XP Did it every time they of offer 2x XP

  • Antonio Mercurio

Thanksgiving event, 2x xp and 3x xp for new entries, double stardust, last till 26th november, extend the event for 1 week, gen 3 drops. Just an opinion

    • Curtis Beales

They’ve just done double stardust so I doubt that. Double XP is more likely and would be welcomed as I have a army of Pidgeys to evolve. 3x XP for new entries they have done fairly recently too.

      • Marco De Freitas

Two months ago isn’t recent, and who cares if i was ?

Also, 3x XP for new entries is the worst bonus ever, even for a new player that’s nothing…

        • Curtis Beales

It is recent in Niantics term. I believe only once or twice have they offered double stardust as a reward so it will be a while before we see it again.

With 3x XP I managed to get a new account I made from level 1 to level 19 in 1 day with lucky eggs as well.

  • Hank

    Rip PoGo plus.

  • Thorsten Laue

2x XP or whatever will work without a update. So i think we will see some new GEN III pokemon. Or i hope so 🙂

  • peponzio

Last year’s Thanksgiving included double experience and double stardust. Halloween event included double candy so as long as it’s not the same from the last worldwide event I (personally) consider it a safe move.

Last year also lasted for one week (exactly) so that’s also safe to assume. It started Wednesday 23rd (the day prior to Thanksgiving) and ended on Wednesday 30th (2016).

Since this year’s Thanksgiving also starts in a Thursday (23rd 2017) we can assume next Wednesday November 22nd 2017 will star the Thanksgiving event 2017 and last until Wednesday November 29th 2017. Maybe a couple days more.

But, well, that’s just me guessing.

    • Chris Denton

I desperately need a double stardust event.

I also think that stardust needs doubled in general. 😎

      • peponzio

I wouldn’t mind a double stardust berry. But the stardust system seems stable, so it probably doesn’t need much tinkering.

Also, I need the double stardust event as well.

        • Chris Denton

Yeah, my problem is that there isn’t Pokémon around. That makes every single aspect of the game appear broken. When I play in a city I can get pretty good amounts of stardust.

          • peponzio

I know, right? I dislike the fact that you need to catch to actually play anything else in the game. It is seriously the most reliable way (to the point of being the only one worth it) to get stardust.

Luckily XP is a little more diverse. We need 20,000,000 XP to reach level 40. But, if we only captured Pokemon for 200 XP per catch (average great throw and first catch) we’d have to capture 100,000 pokemon to reach level 40. Catching 20 pokemon everyday we would be done in a little more than 13 years!

Now, 100,000 Pokemon give 10,000,000 stardust. Enough to max out 42.5 Pokemon from level 20 (hatched or raid boss) or 35.7 Pokemon from zero to top.

Unless we get more experience through other non catching methods (raiding, day and week bonuses, etc.) The more XP we get the less stardust we’ll have at level 40 and the less maxed out Pokemon we’ll have. That’s kind of sad.

          • Chris Denton

There was a tool I used way back when the game launched that showed how long it would take to get to level 40 at your current pace. If I recall correctly I should be level 40 in August of 2032.

            I play everyday, lol.

          • peponzio

Ohh is it in Pokeassistant? I think I used it once. Can’t remember the date I was to turn 40, als play daily.

          • Chris Denton

            It might have been

    • Pika Lee

      JUST TO INFORM YOU:
      All Thanksgivings are on Thursdays.
Not just this year or last year, but EVERY SINGLE ONE.

      • peponzio

So you must inform me of something I already know? Aren’t you the kind and understanding type of person.

I only missed one word in a sentence “Since (every) year’s Thanksgiving…” and you assume I’m just ignorant. You sir, contribute nothing.

  • Chris Denton

This site needs mods, it’s bs that people get away with insulting others for no reason whatsoever.

Is it the keyboard that makes you think it’s ok to insult others?

    • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Well you can just flag comments. It’s quite easy

  • Christopher Andrew Moore

How about releasing mewtwo, a complete overhaul of the joke raid bosses on offer. I play in a small town and it’s immensly insane trying to gather 11 people who been playing since day 1 to come out in all conditions for a tyranitar or lugia but nidoking and Nidoqueen victrebell are all easy obtainable. I propose dragonites as the top level less frequent 4* keep Tt in the fold machamp was a good shout too but thinking too narrowly how about instead of sable eye which I’m up to 500 candy for have mareep instead

    • skitty skittles

Mew two is released my roommate has him

      • Jamie Talbot

        Where are you from?

        • skitty skittles

          North carolina

        • skitty skittles

Mew two is an ex raid you have to be invited to get him

  • John Jorgensen
    • Jayden Plays Pokemon GO

Congrats John. Now hopefully catching it is way easier than receiving an invite!

  • Pika Lee

Somehow this makes the news, but a year ago when many Samsung Galaxy users (4s & 5’s mostly cuz of that stupid forced marshmallow update that made the layout look disgusting with ugly pastel candy colors) couldn’t play anymore, being forced to upgrade and buy a new phone people gave us the middle finger and shrugged their shoulders.

I’m so irritated with this game.
I’m missing 3 Legendarys but have 4 of 6 regionals and no Mewtwo.

This game treats rural players like garbage!!!!
If I didn’t have $65 left in poke coins on here is quit, but now it’s wasted money until Gen 3 in December. But is it even worth it at Lv 39?????
Almost a level 40 and freaking level 20s have a more complete Pokedex than I do.
    Such BS!!!!!!!
