Buddy Walking Goals

It looks like your buddy will be able to store one of these two values, but not both at the same time.  These values will also come with a goal, and that goal will appear in the same section that you look at your buddy hearts.

No details surrounding what we’ll get from these goals, extra hearts maybe?  Perhaps our buddy will bring us a special item once the goal is complete?  I suspect that these quests could tie into the Evolution quests, maybe with a step that has us complete x number of Buddy goals to continue on the quest, as a way to strengthen our bonds with our buddy Pokémon.

Evolution Quests

EVOLUTION_QUEST

Evolution quests will be high-level quests, like the story quests or timed research.  These quests will be pushed into the game master file, so it’s only a matter of time before we get our first look at them.

Each quest will have everything all of the other quests have

  • A Name

  • A type (catch, transfer, evolve, battle, throw, etc)

  • The quest goal

  • What high-level quest it is

  • Dialogue

  • Etc, etc

There can be several quests for a single Pokémon, which suggests that they are looking at giving some Pokémon with multiple evolutions these quests, and there is also a value for what form the Pokémon is.

This could be a way to change your Rotom’s form, complete a quest on your Wash Rotom to turn it into a Mow Rotom.  Or maybe we’ll finally get a method to evolve Eevee into one of the three Kanto Eeveelutions without it being utterly random.

Mega evolutions are also considered to be part of a Pokémon’s evolutionary chain, so these quests could be a way to introduce a method to evolve them without grinding out the energy to do so.

Conclusions and Speculations

Both features look to be incomplete and are at least in part obfuscated.  So it’s difficult to make any conclusions at this point in time, however, I suspect that the evolution quests are Niantic’s way of introducing a more in-depth and involved method of handling special evolution requirements from the main series games other than “walk 10km and evolve at night.”

A small questline to get to know your Eevee before you evolve it into Sylveon would be a great place to utilize this.

This could also be introduced as a way to change the form of Rotom, its reasonably easy to do this in the main series games but a small questline to change the form of your Rotom would be kind of cool.  “Catch 5 ice-types” for Frost Rotom, or “Catch 5 grass-types” for Mow Rotom.  (Yes I realize catch 5 ice-types in the Summer would be difficult)

Or this could just simply be another way to mega evolve Pokémon.

In any event, I think we can look forward to more depth in how we evolve Pokémon coming up.  I’m excited to see what these new features bring.

Stay safe out there trainers.
