Trainers,

it seems that the weather update will come as a separate update from the release of new Hoenn Pokemon. In an article given to the The Verge, Niantic has shared that although 50+ new Hoenn Pokemon are coming later this week, the weather update will be released towards the end of December.

The following statement was given by Niantic:

[…] So the second part of the update — which Niantic says will start rolling out toward the end of the month — will bring this aspect to Pokémon Go. The real-time weather will change the game in a few ways, outside of the obvious aesthetic differences.

In addition, Niantic has clarified a few misconceptions about the new weather system:

  • there are no weather exclusives, but there are Pokemon which prefer a certain type of weather, Lotad given as an example (see quote below)
  • all generation spawns will be affected by the new weather system
  • the system will be real-time

Lotad quote, given by Matt Slemon, a lead developer on the game.

“We don’t have any pokémon that will only show up in a given weather condition, but there are some pokémon who care a lot about their weather conditions, so you can expect Lotad to show up in really large numbers when it’s raining outside. But if you live in an area where it doesn’t really have that much rain, you might still see a Lotad wandering through your habitat.

Additionally, Slemon explained that the weather system was implemented in order to accompany the Hoenn region theme, which typically deals with weather changes and influence of weather.

    I love it!!!

  • Ethan Hargreaves

They may not count as weather ‘exclusives’ but I’m curious to see how the different forms of Castform are implemented. Technically having just one Castform would count as the pokedex entry however, allowing each different form to be captured in its respective climate would be excellent – without them being ‘exclusive’. They’d be comparable to the multiple hat Pikachu’s which appear as silhouettes at first despite having Pikachu in the pokedex. They become a novelty which provides a somewhat useless Pokemon with a purpose; much as Ditto did upon release.

    • Curtis Beales

I can see a different pokedex button being implemented for each, like they have for any shinies or the unknown letters.

      • Ethan Hargreaves

Indeed. The same will surely be done for the exclusive hat Pokemon as well; I know a lot of people who dislike being unable to view them in the Pokedex as it doesn’t allow people to then transfer them and make room in their bag.

    • Pokemon Trainer N

You actually bring up an interesting point. They’ll probably wait to release castform until weather is implemented.

    • Gavin Walsh

Ditto is still supposed to come relevant if breading ever comes in. Plus I like using Ditto in gym takeovers .

      • Ethan Hargreaves

Exactly; Ditto can have its uses but its key reason for existence (breeding) isn’t yet possible. When it comes to Castform its use needs to be to change the weather of a battlefield to favour your line up, something which I highly doubt Niantic isready to roll out. Therefore the novelty of the forms in different weather climates would at least provide some enjoyment and by them time, much like catching a Pidgey and having it transform did during gen 1.

    • hkmaly

Shouldn’t the castform transform according to CURRENT weather and not what weather you caught it in?

  • Dan

Awesome. No reason to penalize people that don’t get snow (Key West), or have minimal days of sunshine (England).

    • Sam Burton

Actually England gets quite a varied weather pattern, with most snow days being quite uncommon. Last year I think we only got perhaps 5-10 days max where it snowed in my region, and most of those days were just a spec of snow….I do feel for those who live in much less varied weather locations.

      • Dan

I was trying to not make it US-centric, and still use an area that’s rumored to have rain all the time.

  • Shokon

Soo, when will Niantic realize that the bag size max needs to increase???

    • Chanderule

      For what, another 500 Pokéballs?
Just delete them, you will spin new anyways

      • David Fein

Actually for everything, potions, revives, golden rasp, TM’s, Lucky Eggs, incense,
raid passes, Rare candy, and poke balls

        • Tom

I’m completely fine with a 500 item bag and still can’t understand how people have 1000+ items. You’re so greedy!

        • Chanderule

          Pokéballs only take up space
You dont need potions and super potions if you have hundreds of max and hyper anyways, Golden Razzies are to be used, not stored, and you can easily get rid of rare candies on Mons you need to power up or evolve

    • Gustavo Dante

      I agree… 1500 isn’t in off for me, we need 3000!

      • Tohka Yatogami

There’s absolutely no way you can run out of space at 1500. If you do, you’re not playing right and need to learn the video game basics of item management (there’s no reason why you need 500 revives…) I’m at only 400 space and done over 200 raids and still manage all my items just fine.

        • Paul Parke

Try holding onto 700+ rare candies and 152 TM’s because no Pokemon you currently have need them, you run out bag space very fast

          • mcfilmmakers

So delete the extras genius. You don’t need that many.

          • Tohka Yatogami

You don’t even need more than 50 TM yet you have 150.. and just dump your rare candy on any species that’s strong until you find a 100% one to power up. Use it on Lugia or Zapdos or something

        • Sam Burton

You are a fool to tell people they aren’t playing right.

          • Tohka Yatogami

No. People can play however they want but there will always be good and bad decisions. Just because it’s freedom of choose doesn’t mean it can’t be a poor choice. That’s how all video games work

          • Sam Burton

Are you even listening to what you are saying? You clearly arent listing to what I’m saying as you have completely missed my point!

          • Colin Todd

If I pick up a guitar and start hitting the headstock with a hammer, would Tohka be a fool for telling me I’m not playing it right? No, because there are right ways to play a guitar and then there are wrong ways.

Pokemon GO isn’t a sandbox game, therefore there definitely are wrong ways to play it.

          • Sam Burton

Yes, because smashing up a guitar rather than playing it properly and not being happy with bag/pokemon storage space is a valid comparison…phhht

If you want to use musical instruments as a comparison, this issue can be compared to a guitar case manufacturer making just the one guitar case that only fits the guitar, a capo, 1 tuner and 2 set of strings. What if I would like to have a couple of spare sets of strings, some extra batteries for my tuner, etc, etc… What if my batteries run out?…should I be forced to find more.. or if a string or 2 snaps, am I expected to rely on a shop being open to buy more in the middle of a gig?? No, they should cater for those who are happy with less space and for those who want as much space as possible!

        • expresiva

Most of my bag is filled up with Pokeballs – I can fill up only once every 7 days or so, and I’m nearly completely out by the end of the week.

    • Sam Burton

For those of you who are ignorant enough to try to dictate required bag space to other players on here…

You have not considered other people’s varying location, play style and game strategy.

For example, I have in the past, when very active in certain locations, run out of revives/potions/pokeballs/berries, etc, and there have not been able to replenish quick enough due to either lack of pokestops, or factors which meant I could not spin (out with the family, friends, many reasons, etc)

Buying a pokemongo plus / gotcha helped with this, but not everyone has one or can buy one.

You should be allowed to stockpile as much resources as you wish for whatever scenario you may come accross, without being forced to throw anything away, to ensure you always have what you need.

This also especially applies to pokemon storage. It is really quite pitiful how a game which promotes catching and collecting pocket monsters, would force you to delete creatures you want to keep, all because the won’t up the storage. It’s gobsmackingly ridiculous!

Also, you cannot compare this game to the original series because it is completely different. You have walk/travel to play which means a lot more effort and even planning required.

I cannot think of any good reason why they would limit bag and pokemon storage to their current limit, unless there is a technical issue, which really, they should be working hard to resolve, above and beyond new features.

      • Finn Brown

        very well said
also having more space is a money maker for naintic

    • Sam Burton

This would ensure you always have what you need. My time and effort is more valuable than money and ultimately this is what I am being forced to throw away. This is not acceptable.

    • hkmaly

Forget bag size: we need more pokemon storage for all those new pokemons.

    • Antonius Naumann

I really hope, they increase Pokemon space, since I like to keep my event Pokemon like hat Pikachus, Unowns and my regionals.

For collectors, 1000 is already a bit low

      • Shokon

        Especially with gen 3 coming!

  • Haakon Hovde

Does anyone know which weather chanel/forecast agency is used for the weather info in the game?

  • Dariusz Golonko

    fix itbug lag error first

  • Felipe Bauer

I’m just concerned with how this will work in countries like here in Brazil.
We only have two weathers, clear and sunny, and very rarely rain.
I was hopping they would make the weather’s server generated…

  • Jean-François Dessureault

Does somebody knows if the go+ and gotcha got fixed?

  • Losifer

So it goes live AFTER we have any chance of snow. Nice.
