Clanging Scales Kommo-o in the Pokémon GO PvE & PvP meta

Trainers, it’s that time of the year… the June Community Day! For the last five years, this eagerly anticipated mid-year event has consistently featured a Dragon type Pokémon, usually leaning towards a Pseudo Legendary line.

2025’s extravaganza brings Jangmo-o, which eventually evolves into the Dragon/Fighting juggernaut: Kommo-o. During this Community Day, the exclusive move for Kommo-o is Clanging Scales.

With Pseudo Legendaries typically being meta relevant, where does Kommo-o fit? Does Clanging Scales change its fortunes like it did for Metagross and Hydreigon, or will it push Kommo-o to more relevant areas like it did for Garchomp?

To find out, let’s start with Kommo-o’s basics

Kommo-o CP, Stats and Weaknesses

Pokémon Artwork of Kommo-o from Pokémon GO Kommo-o DragonFighting
Max CP (Level 40 / 50) 3309 / 3741
Attack 222
Defense 240
HP 181
Weaknesses Fairyx2 Dragon Flying Ice Psychic
Resistances Bug Dark Electric Fire Grass Rock Water

Unlike most Pseudo Legendaries, Kommo-o has a low ATK stat. This immediately raises concerns for its PvE viability as a Dragon type. As a Fighting type, it’s not too shabby but it lacks a proper moveset. It learns both Counter and Aura Sphere in the mainline games and that combo would have made it a pretty neat Fighting type attacker.

Now, the Community Day exclusive Clanging Scales is a Dragon type Charged Move, and well, the competition is fierce. Even if you get generous and keep Legendaries out of contention (Megas and Shadows are anyway not being considered), Dragons like Dragonite, Salamence, Garchomp, and Haxorus are miles ahead in DPS (Damage Per Second).

Dragapult is just behind Haxorus and Salamence, and a busted Dragon Darts would make it even stronger. Baxcalibur may go the same route with a busted Glaive Rush. So, Clanging Scales would have to be Behemoth Bash levels of OP to help Kommo-o break the mold.

Clanging Scales PvE Profile & Kommo-o performance

Power 120
Energy -100
Damage Window 1880-3200ms
Duration 3300ms
DPS (Damage Per Second) 36.36
DPE (Damage Per Energy) 1.20
DPSxDPE 43.43

A 1-bar move dealing 120 DMG and a 3.3s cooldown? That’s bad. Really bad.

  • This move could have worked with a low cooldown.
  • It’s worse than Dragon Claw (which Kommo-o learns) in terms of DPE (Dragon Claw has 1.36 DPE).
  • It’s worse than Draco Meteor (42.86 DPS and 64.29 DPSxDPE).
  • A 2-bar 120 DMG move with a slower cooldown would have placed Kommo-o at a level similae to Dragonite, Garchomp et al. It would have made Kommo-o functional in PvE at the very least.

Kommo-s’s stats were never tailored for PvE, plus Clanging Scales is learned only by it, so there’s no reason the move couldn’t be something similar to Behemoth Bash. That would have elevated Kommo-o to a PvE power level it truly deserves but well… this Pseudo Legendary won’t be a PvE Pokémon by any means.

Clanging Scales PvP Profile & Kommo-o performance

Power 120
Energy -45
Effect 100% chance to debuff Kommo’s DEF by 1 stage
DPE (Damage Per Energy) 2.67

WHAT??!! Clanging Scales is cracked in PvP!!!

Folks, the highest DPE in PvP was previously held by V-create, the signature move of Victini, at an impressive 2.38. Now, Kommo-o takes the crown (convincingly, that too) at a monstrous 2.67 DPE. It’s the highest in Pokémon GO! 😯

To put it into perspective, Clanging Scales is a boosted Wild Charge/Close Combat (100 DMG, 45 energy, debuffs DEF by 2 stages), boasting +20 DMG and debuffing DEF by only 1 stage.

Seriously, that’s extremely OP but hey, it’s in line with Clanging Scales in the main series games where there’s a single DEF debuff as well.

However, there are issues.

  • For one, Kommo-o has to rely only on Dragon Tail as a premium Fast Move as the rest don’t make it good enough. Dragon Claw is great but going mono Dragon with Dragon Tail, Dragon Claw, and Clanging Scales is risky.
  • Close Combat is a no no as it also causes a DEF drop (a sharper one, in fact). Brick Break is cheap (40 energy) but the damage output is poor (only 40 DMG).
  • Clanging Scales is great but it opens the gate to true success only when the shields are down.

So, where does this place Kommo-o in the PvP meta? Let’s find out.

Great League

In the (1-1) shield scenario, Kommo-o beats Shadow Sableye (not Sableye), Shadow and regular Dusclops, Blastoise, Golisopod, Swampert, and Mandibuzz. Nothing too impressive.

But going by Clanging Scales’ debuffing nature, the (0-0) shield scenario is like buffet for Kommo-o, bringing out its absolute best with wins against Skeledirge, Takonflame, Dewgong, Morpeko, Shadow Drapion, Shadow and regular Sableye, Shadow Quagsire, Lapras, Galarian Corsola, Annihilape, Jellicent, and Shadow Gligar. Pretty impressive out here!

Add the fact that Kommo-o has a nice 240 DEF, using this dragon as a closer is a sound decision!

Ultra League

Okay, Kommo-o is very good in the Ultra League!

In (1-1), it destroys the likes of Registeel, Zygarde Complete, Guzzlord, Mandibuzz, Shadow Dragonite, Typhlosion, Ampharos, Poliwrath, Venusaur, Blastoise, Cradily, Gliscor, and Dusknoir. It also barely inches past Guzzlord for victory. On the flip side, it falls to Giratina Altered, Steelix, Nidoqueen, Annihilape, Feraligatr, Galarian Moltres, and more. Let’s not even talk about Fairy types, particularly the Charmers.

In the (2-2) scenario, Kommo-o goes borderline nuclear, beating even Giratina Altered, Nidoqueen, Cobalion, Forretress, Malamar, Bellibolt, Virizion, Annihilape, and Feraligatr. Nothing survives a Clanging Scales to the face and even those resisting it sustain an appreciable loss of HP.

Open Master League

Kommo-o falls hard in the Master League, mainly die to power creep and the prominence of Fairy types in this meta. A maxed Kommo-o in the Master League not only has to face fellow Pseudos but also insane Legendaries like Dialga and Palkia Origin, Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma, and the Crowned doggos Zacian & Zamazenta. It’s ridiculous out here and Kommo-o struggles to make much of an impact. But yet, Kommo-o can masquerade as an underrated gem with some impressive wins.

Kommo-o beats Black and White Kyurem, Palkia and Palkia Origin, Giratina Origin and Altered, Single Strike Style Urshifu, Landorus Therian, Dragonite, Kyogre Shadow Rhyperior, and Mamoswine when there are no shields left. Even in the (1-1), it’s no slouch, beating Black Kyurem, Excadrill, Giratina Origin and Altered, Kyogre, Rhyperior, Single Strike Style Urshifu, Ursaluna, and Zygarde Complete. Needless to say, it falls like a pack of cards against Fairy types. Additionally, the weakness to Flying also hurts its credibility. Basically, it’s a decent pick that has its issues.

Is it meta-shaking? No. Is it dependable in the long run? Nope. But can it garb you surprise wins? Sure!

So, Clanging Scales Kommo-o is able to flex its amazing move the best in the Ultra League meta. It is a fun pick in the Great and Master League, but awkward as well.

Should you get one? Absolutely!

All the best, trainers!
