Not Boomburst! Here’s what Kommo-o really needs!

Kommo-o DragonFighting

Hey Trainers!

Did you get Boomburst? No? But isn’t everyone getting Boomburst this Season?!

Indeed! While we were all expecting at least a decent set of move upgrades and additions, it all went downhill. As if Noivern’s poor exhibition of this move wasn’t enough already, we got three new Pokémon with Boomburst! And among the three mons that got Boomburst, Kommo-o seems like the biggest missed opportunity. This pseudo legendary fighter dragon is massively coveted in the game at the moment and rightfully so. It’s perhaps the most underrated PvP Pokémon as well, with the rare distinction of having potential in all three PvP leagues!

There’s just so much one can do with Kommo-o and Boomburst ain’t it, chief. And that’s the premise of this article. Whether it’s a future move shake-up or Community Day, Kommo-o is bound to get a new move into its arsenal one day. As such, this write-up will explore the possibilities and the untapped potential of this wonderful dragon, and show just how much great it can get. It’s already good, no doubt, but it is slated to get better and more threatening to the meta. Let’s dig in!

Counter

Counter is arguably the best PvP move around! And when blessed with STAB, on a mon with excellent neutral coverage like Kommo-o, and you’re in for a fun ride. Close Combat is a scary move but the sharp DEF drop from it tends to harm Kommo-o’s prospects. Moreover, CC is Kommo-o’s only bragging right against the omnipresent Steel types (including Dialga in ML!). With Counter in the mix, Kommo-o can start thrashing the steely mons for good, even beating the likes of Metagross in ML. With a mouth-watering [DPT/EPT] of [4.00/3.50] and a lower EPT and cooldown than Dragon Tail, Kommo-o finds itself gaining access to its charged moves quicker and smoother. That being said, while Counter is undoubtedly an amazing addition to Kommo-o’s movepool, Dragon Tail Kommo-o is hardly behind in performance. So Counter makes this dragon more functional but is not necessarily a major upgrade.

Breaking Swipe

Breaking Swipe is too good of a move in PvP as well as PvE to a certain degree! In PvP, it is a Dragon Claw clone in terms of stats but it also decreases the opponent’s ATK. This makes Breaking Swipe a clear upgrade over Dragon Claw for Kommo-o. In all three leagues, Breaking Swipes helps shoot up Kommo-o’s win rate appreciably and makes it a bigger threat (particularly in the Ultra League). Kommo-o has significant bulk and a move like Breaking Swipe would end up making the dragon a major problem to take out.

It is worth noting that Breaking Swipe Kommo-o can even beat the likes of:

  • Dialga, Plakia, Metagross and Melmetal in ML
  • Trevenant, Giratina (Altered), Dragon Breath Gyarados, Walrein, Charizard, Nidoqueen, Cofagrigus, Shadow Machamp, Aurorus and Umbreon in UL!!
  • Alolan Marowak, Cofagrigus and Mandibuzz in GL

Aura Sphere?

A lot of trainers speculate Aura Sphere for Kommo-o, but they don’t realize that Aura Sphere might not help it much.

For instance, Aura Sphere is downgrade for Kommo-o in PvP as Close Combat is clearly better, End of story.

However, you will be surprised how it can benefit Kommo-o in PvE… provided it gets Counter as a fast move! I’ll keep this short and sweet, but worth your read: Aura Sphere Kommo-o surpasses Conkeldurr and Machamp in DPS and has significantly more TDO than Lucario. Overall, Kommo-o becomes a top-notch Fighting type in your raid battles. Plus, it looks so awesome!

Conclusion: The best case scenario

It’s Breaking Swipe. A strict upgrade over the current neat Kommo-o in PvP. It’s like making your pizza cheesier or adding marshmallows to hot chocolate.

Counter is neat as well. It’s always a good fast move to have, especially when ut’s STAB.

Or maybe wait till its Community Day? Now Clanging Scales brings a self-debuff and will not justify being used over something like Breaking Swipe unless it’s super OP. So Clangorous Soul sounds reasonable. It even buffs its stats. 😀 What do you say? Clangorous Soul doesn’t deal damage in the MSG? Well even Charm doesn’t! And we all know how hard-hitting it is in Go 😉

Kommo-o is amazing, and with moves like Breaking Swipe, it can be stellar and will get the appreciation it deserves.
