News roundup: EX Raids triggered worldwide, Groudon is over, Kyogre catch fatigue

Trainers, it’s yet another lazy Tuesday in Pokémon GO, which makes it the perfect day for a news roundup! The last few days (Sunday in particular) were quite exciting for anyone following our comprehensive guide on how to trigger EX Raids, as Niantic has unleashed another wave of EX Raid invites scheduled for January 24th!

#1: EX Raids triggered worldwide — finally!

Important reminder: the Hub still doesn’t know a lot about the invitation mechanism, nor do we understand how to force the system into submission. It seems completely random for experienced raiders and it has displayed preference for first time / casual raiders.

It has finally happened — players around the world have successfully managed to trigger a lot of EX Raid events, reinforcing the steps we outlined in our comprehensive guide on how to trigger EX Raids. Finally, after weeks and months of frustration, we have a sensible way to trigger an EX Raid event in your local area.

We were delighted to read your tweets and messages and we sincerely hope you will get an EX invite in the next wave:

#2: Groudon raids have ended

Well, all good things must come to an end, right? Groudon has left the building and is no longer appearing in Tier 5 raid eggs. We hope you managed to snatch a few good ones, as they could prove to be a interesting option in the raids to come — if nothing, as generalists and slot fillers.

One final salute to one of the most badass Ground types out there.

#3: Kyogre catch rate is… frustrating at best

Now that Groudon has left the Tier 5 system, Kyogre is the only currently available Level 5 raid boss — for better or for worse. Despite its elite stats, stellar performance as a Water type and incredibly cool looks, players are reporting cases of “kyogre catch fatigue”.

Kyogre has proved very difficult to catch due to several inconvenient factors:

  • the model is placed far away from the player, much further than Groudon
  • Kyogre’s attack and movement rate is much higher than Groudon
  • it is unusually hard to land Great, and especially Excellent, throws at him

Although this was all well known from day one, players are now experiencing increased raid frustration as they spend raid passes and walk away empty handed from the bonus capture encounter.

Will Niantic increase Kyogre’s capture chance? We doubt it, especially as there’s plenty of time before Kyogre disappears from the Tier 5 Raid system: Kyogre will be available until 1:00 P.M. PST on February 14, 2018.

Luckily, a Youtuber by the name of FunkySho has created a handy video that displays a comparison of good and bad Kyogre throws and how to throw Kyogre excellents. Check out his video by clicking this link.

#4: Cloyster is the “new Blissey” of Kyogre encounters

According to a quick research done by RyanoftheDay on reddit, using Cloyster in a Kyogre raid is worse than using a Blissey, at least damage wise!

  • Cloyster Level 40 Frost Breath + Avalanche
    • ~6 DPS
    • ~220 Damage before fainting
  • Blissey Level 40 Pound + Hyper Beam
    • ~7 DPS
    • ~450 Damage before fainting

It’s highly advised that you prevent players in your local raid group from using Cloyster, especially in situations where DPS could be an issue. Sure, it may look like you’re contributing, but you are essentially dragging the whole raid down.
