Lycanroc has been a fan-favorite Pokémon since its debut in the franchise back in Generation VII, the Sun and Moon Games. It has been available in GO for a quite a while now, but its Dusk form is nowhere to be seen. Today we we will explore what really makes this Dusk form so special, and why it is considered the better form of the three.
Basic Info about Lycanroc
Lycanroc is a Rock type Pokémon from the Alola region. It is the evolution of Rockruff, and has three different forms: Midday, Midnight and Dusk, with Dusk being the most famous and powerful one.
Prior to the Lustrous Odyssey event, only the Midday and Midnight forms were available in Pokémon GO, by catching (or hatching) a Rockruff and evolving it for 50 candies during day or night to get the desired form.
But during the Lustrous Odyssey event:
Dusk Form Lycanroc, the Wolf Pokémon, will make its Pokémon GO debut!
For the first time in Pokémon GO, Trainers will be able to evolve Shiny Rockruff into Shiny Dusk Form Lycanroc. Starting with this event, some Rockruff that Trainers hatch or encounter will be able to evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc instead of Midday Form or Midnight Form Lycanroc.
How to obtain Dusk Form Lycanroc
- Rockruff hatched from 2 km and 7 km Eggs have a chance to evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc.
- Some Rockruff from Field Research encounters will be able to evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc instead of Midday Form or Midnight Form Lycanroc.
Ash’s Lycanroc
If you know Pokémon, you know Ash. He was the star of the franchise from the very beginning. The main character in the Pokémon anime for over 20 years, the legendary trainer of Pikachu, the winner of the Manalo Conference, and The World Coronation Series.
When he visited Alola, in the Sun and Moon anime, he had a Lycanroc of his own. A Dusk Form, at that. But before that, before its evolution, his Lycanroc was just a little Rockruff.
Before Ash was his trainer, Professor Kukui had found Rockruff starving and confused after a battle with a strong Pokémon. Ash was staying at Kukui’s and him and Rockruff really started to bond, and get stronger by practicing moves and battling other trainers. His attachments with Ash led to him getting caught by Ash, and eventually evolving to a Dusk Form Lycanroc.
Lycanroc helped Ash win many battles, the notable ones including Gladion in the Manalo Conference and Professor Kukui as the Masked Royal.

Ash’s Rockruff evolved into a Dusk Form Lycanroc because of their special bond and connection. The timing of Rockruff’s evolution was when the sun was setting, (dusk-time), hence the Dusk Form.
In the MSG, only Rockruffs with the ability Own Tempo, are able to evolve into Dusk Forms of their evolutions.
What makes this form so special?
- Dusk Form Lycanroc has the Tough Claws ability which increases its attack damage by 30%!
- Dusk Form Lycanroc has an intense fighting spirit under its calm exterior, and is very good in battling in the MSG.
- It is a combination of the Midday and Midnight forms. It is very loyal and has the same stance as the Midday form. It’s eyes glow red and has a fighting spirit just like the Midnight form.
- A couple battles before Ash’s Rockruff evolved, it became aggressive and started attacking his own trainer. Trainer Olivia suggested that it meant that it may have been close to evolving.
