The Cresselia EX Drop event is chugging along in Pokémon TCG Pocket, bringing new promo cards from the Space-Time Smackdown expansion.
Aside from Cresselia EX, the promos also feature reprints of Electivire, Turtwig, and Skarmory found in the Space-Time Smackdown set. Finally, there’s a new Misdreavus card.
So, how do these new cards fare in the meta? How do you use them? Time to find out!
Cresselia EX is an EX card for the Space-Time Smackdown set. The Electivire, Turtwig, and Skarmory are alternate art reprints, while Misdreavus is a new card with a new attack. All of them have stamps to mark them as promo cards.
Cresselia EX
Cresselia EX is pretty much the Psychic-type version of the Lapras EX card that headlined the first-ever Drop event in TCG Pocket. 140 HP, a 3-Energy move dealing 80 DMG, and getting 20 DMG healed.
Cresselia and Lapras are even striking the same pose, haha.
However, while Lapras EX heals on using its move, Cresselia EX has an Ability called Lunar Plumage that heals 20 DMG whenever you attach an Energy to it. This is like a counterpart to the lethal Darkrai EX that does 20 DMG whenever an Energy is attached.
This makes Cresselia EX a perfect card to occupy the Active Spot at the beginning of the battle. Its Ability offsets the effects of the popular Rocky Helmet and Druddigon’s Rough Skin. On that note, keep in mind that Druddigon + Rocky Helmet inflicts 40 DMG so Cresselia heals only 20 DMG, still taking -20 HP. It also covers up for Darkrai’s 20 chIp damage from Nightmare Aura.
Cresselia is a great addition to the Mewtwo EX | Gardevoir deck wherein it can wall the opponent’s attacks while you supply Energy to Mewtwo EX and evolve Ralats all the way to Gardevoir on the Bench. You can also use Dawn to transfer Energy from Cresselia to Mewtwo EX once it’s retreated.
The Psychic deck always relied on Mew for tanking hits while building Mewtwo EX and Gardevoirm but Mew proved to be better at revenge-killing high Energy EX cards. Cresselia EX, on the other hand, has healing and can do meaningful damage to all opponents (Mew depends on the opponent having good attack damage to do the same in return).
Additionally, Cresselia goes well with Mismagius EX and Togekiss, a tacky deck that’s bulky, does high damage, and has a great element in its Confusion status. Cresselia EX is the foundation of this deck and healing it ensures it’s typically not on the radar of Cyrus.
Electivire
Lightning decks haven’t really been used as much as Darkrai EX decks or the Palkia EX deck, but this electrifying set can never really be counted out. The key to making Electivire’s Exciting Voltage, well, exciting is the Volkner Supporter card.
Generally, Exciting Voltage does 40 DMG for 2 Energy but when there are 2 more Energy attached (hello Volkner), the damage output is ramped up to 120 DMG! This card is a great teammate to the Pikachu EX and Pachirisu EX set, and 120 DMG is quite handy at only 2 Energy. Drawing 2 Volkner cards makes it even better, turning Electivire into a powerful late-game sweeper. Remember to use Giovanni to increase the damage to 130.
Turtwig
Grass got a lot of love in the Mythical Island set with cards like Celebi EX, Serperior, a new Exeggutor, and Dhelmise becoming core parts of the meta. This has been sorely missed in Space-Time Smackdown as there are no exceptional cards. Even Yanmega EX isn’t the best and is, in fact, among the ‘weaker’ EX cards in this meta in terms of utility.
So, Turtwig and in essence, Torterra isn’t a prominent card right now. But maybe the mini-expansion releasing on February 28 can introduce a Torterra EX card and suddenly push this Turtwig card to relevance! It’s a starter, so don’t count this one out just yet. 🙂
Skarmory
The Metal deck has finally risen to importance with Dialga EX and Bastiodon debuting in TCG Pocket. This has also made Melmetal more popular. Skarmory may not look like the most interesting card of the lot, but it holds the potential to give you a definitive edge early game.
In your first turn (especially if you go second), Skarmory goes to the Active Spot and you draw a Pokémon Tool like Rocky Helmet or Giant Cape. Attach it to Skarmory and give it the turn’s Energy. Boom, you do 50 DMG, which is often enough to OHKO weaker cards. 50 DMG at only 1 Energy is phenomenal and can even win you games if your opponent hasn’t drawn any other Basic cards on their first turn. Consider building Metal decks with Skarmory, Dialga EX, and Melmetal, and leave your opponents shocked! 😉
Misdreavus
Misdreavus is a new card and a huge improvement over the Misdreavus card from Space-Time Smackdown, which is depicted below:
See? Mumble is a bad move. Confuse Ray, on the other hand, plays into the Confusion mechanics of Mismagius EX and makes it a headache to deal with.
When your Pokémon in Confused, you need to flip a coin. If heads, your Pokémon can attack normally but if you get tails, you simply cannot attack and your turn ends.
Mismagius EX is notorious for this since its Magical Delusion move deals 70 DMG at only 2 Energy, and also confuses the target.
With this new Misdreavus promo, you can torment your opponent with the Confusion shenanigans even before evolution! 😈
Mismagius EX is a tremendous card that is sure to become more popular as the meta progresses, making this adorable Misdreavus card a must-have!
Overall, this promo event is the most impactful one till date as all cards hold potential or have become core parts of their respective decks. So start grinding those solo battles and collect ’em all ASAP!
Happy collecting and battling, TCG Pocket-ers!
