Trainers,

the GAME_MASTER has been updated, showing Ho-Oh’s base capture rate. As per today’s update, Ho-Oh’s BCR is 2%, putting it in the same capture difficulty as Lugia. Be aware that Lugia was a very difficult catch, so be careful and don’t waste any Premium Balls.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any special tips or any workarounds that can help you catch it easier, it’s simply a difficult capture encounter and that’s it.

A lot of trainers have already managed to catch Ho-Oh by using the ProdigiesNation’s hold and release trick to land an Excellent throw, but you’re probably doing that already. We can also recommend that you use Golden Berries on every throw, there is absolutely no reason not to do it and it increases your chances a lot.

Ho-Oh Catch Chances with various throws and berries

Ho-Oh BCR is 2% as observed in the GAME_MASTER file. The following table shows various throw/berry combos.

Berry Curve Throw type
Normal Nice Great Excellent
No Berry
2.00% 2.30% 3.00% 3.70%
Curve 3.40% 3.91% 5.10% 6.29%
Razz Berry
3.00% 3.45% 4.50% 5.55%
Curve 5.10% 5.87% 6.29% 7.65%
Golden Razz Berry
5.00% 5.75% 7.50% 9.25%
Curve 8.50% 9.78% 12.75% 15.73%

How useful / valuable is Ho-Oh in Pokémon GO?

Although Ho-Oh does have a relatively high Max CP value (3889), it’s a lot less useful than a Mewtwo, as it’s move sets and typing creates an unwanted gap between expectation and reality.

With no Quick Move that benefits from STAB and with double weakness to rock, Ho-Oh is a rather disappointing addition to the Uber tier, continuing the tradition of lackluster fire Ubers.

If you already have a strong Entei, the power difference will hardly be notable, but we still recommend farming Ho-Oh for it’s future rarity and trading value.

  • Kyle Gribelli

what about with fire/flying gold medal catch bonus?

  • Jakub Srna Zatloukal

IS shiny ho oh in game?

    • Robdebobrob

Its in the game files, just like all other legendarys. But you can not encounter it ingame

      • Joel Jensen

I read that is is available in-game.

        • Kyle Gribelli

          it’s not.

  • Ollieparton OP

Catch rate feels like it’s more than 2%. 11 people in my city was taking it down and every single one of them got it. Might be luck or the catch rate is off

    • Michal Hušák

I belive the target cycle is very big for Ho oH. So it is hard to miss. I had captured one by first ball as well …

    • Ibrahim Khalil

2% is the base catch rate. Add in golden raz and great curve, takes it to ~ 12.75%. Multiply by 8 Balls = 100%.
So in theory, if you don’t catch it and you’re hitting every ball, it is purely down to bad luck. Same like if you roll a dice 6 times, in theory you have a 1/6 chance to roll a 6 for each throw, so theoretical 100% chance to roll a 6 at least once. (if that all makes sense)

      • Kyle Gribelli

You’re not very good at probability and statistics, are you?

  • Joe1407

5 raids for Ho oH and 5 fly away.

  • Joel Jensen

We have had one in our town so far. Lugia wasn’t this rare.

  • John Jorgensen

Is there any way that you guys would be able to put together an info graphic about catch rate with other berries and not just Golden Razz? I always seem to have much better luck with Nanab Berries than I do with Golden’s.

    • peponzio

There is a section like that. The third row in the table shows rates with golden razz.

The second row shows rates with regular razz berries.

And the first row shows rates with “no berries” or pinap or nanab berries. They are included there.

      • John Jorgensen

If Nanab and Pinaps basically count as “No Berries” then can you explain to me why myself and quite a few people I go Raiding with have a better catch rate using Nanabs and/or Pinaps than they do with Goldens…. I know, according to everything I’ve read, that Pinaps are only for double candy and Nanabs are only to “calm” the Pokémon, but I can’t help but feel like there is an increase in chances hiding somewhere.

        • scelestion

Nothing in the code supports this, so I don’t see any possibility that your experience is anything more than placebo.

        • peponzio

I feel it too. There is some indication they might have some increase in the rate, but if there is then it is only a bug.

          Besides feeling is no fact.

        • Robdebobrob

well obviously with Nanab if hes calmer its easier to catch it. So that would make sense. Higher catchrate with Pinabs would not make sense. If you really want to be sure i suggest you start keeping track of it in your group. If you see something “special” after a 100 raids total you could comment on it.

          • Rich Harper

I have all the birds, including Ho-Oh today, as well as all three of the Beasts. I use this particular tactic which involves three nanabs and then a golden razz. Majority of the time I catch them. Not a perfect tactic, but it seems to work. So, there may be something to the nanabs increasing catch rates. Regardless, luck to all on their journeys.

          • scelestion

Google the Reddit post “The “Nanab Trick” probably isn’t what you think it is.” They said it well there, “Yeah some people think it worked for them. It’s just confirmation bias. For every person out there it worked for, there are 10 others who lost out because of it.”

          • Dan

I kind of do this too. I use a Nanab to catch my bearings, then Pinap or Golden Razz, depending on the CP. I’m about 50% catch rate total.

        • Higher_Ground

they don’t do anything to increase your chances, but given how paltry they are to begin with stick with whatever works for you.

  • Brian Linné Andersso

Got 2 out of 4 today with golden and curve ball. a 86 IV and a 96 IV

  • Sayan Plebeian Guha

I would like to sincerely thank niantic!
I was disappointed earlier that even though I am a lvl 32 player,i didn’t get an ex raid pass.
I am glad ho oh wasn’t thrown in2 dt category. Just got 1!!! Its amazing.,d animation z super cool,it looks damn sexy!
So thank you again. Will be going 4 another 1!

  • Anders Behring Breitfart

I have no motivation catching Ho-Oh while knowing that everyone else around me can also get it. This game is only fun when you have something that others don’t (such as a Mewtwo) and shove it in their face.

    • Camilo Maiz Ortuzar

      Insane or sarcasm.

      • Robdebobrob

        Nah, troll.

    • Cooper McCollum

      Why you Troll bro?

  • Clint Yesui

Got a 100% iv. First raid that came out upon release . Second ball with a crit catch 🙂 caught it 11/27/17 @ 4:39 Pm. Trainer name is : Sir Gatsby https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e9548f56727acc996aa791655c58b676db2f4c1704740eda99074b22590a82d9.png

  • Christopher Andrew Moore

Caught with a pinap seen 1 caught 1 roll on dec 13

  • Chanderule

How is Ho-oh a disapointing adition to fire type ubers, the only ubers before him was Mew and Mewtwo

    • Higher_Ground

They’re talking about Entei, Moltres, Flareon, Arcanine… which most people now have in abundance.

      • Chanderule

        How are they ubers

        • Dan

Moltres has the number 4 attack stat in the game. Entei is slightly lower, but has a much higher defense and stamina stat that it becomes better than Moltres. Arcanine and Flareon have access to double fire moves, where Ho-Oh doesn’t. And it’s best Charge move isn’t Fire Blast; it’s Brave Bird.

          • Chanderule

But how does Flareon and Arcanine get into ubers

          • Dan

            Pure fire typing.

          • Chanderule

            That doesnt make them ubers

  • Hank

im pretty sure the catch rate is about 10% higher for the low level noobies who dont even throw curve.
Niantic want them noobs to keep playing, and they know lv 40 is the one paying for raid passes.
    Same with mewtwo invites.

    • John

      This ^

    • Robdebobrob

4/4 as a level 38. Just bad luck?

    • Chanderule

      makes sense

  • Cooper McCollum

    im at 0/4 with 10+ balls each time and at least 3+ curving excellent throws with golden razz each time. There is no hope);

    • tony vanhecke

I got him on second throw curving throw great with golden razz 😆😂😆

      • Chris Denton

I got mine first ball, great, curve and pinap.

    • Higher_Ground

don’t worry, I’m sure they’re just waiting for you to find a perfect IV Ho-Oh

      • Cooper McCollum

YESSSSS. I just caught one today with the last ball with a critical. It is 100% IV!!!

        God Bless you!!!

    • Vinni Erb

I’m 1/4 it’s not as easy as people are saying, I’ve seen many players not catching!

  • Dill

Quite happy for the release of Ho-oh. Makes up for my on going sadness of not getting an ex-raid pass. :p
Wonder when news about mew will come out.
    Regardless, yay more legendaries!

  • ikato kiyazaki

When are the dogs leaving… i wasted so much time walking around just to see enteis hatching come on ..

    • Curtis Beales

The 30th of November is their last day. So on the 1st of December you’ll know the black egg will be a Ho-oh.

    • Dan

Why do people insist on calling them dogs? They aren’t dogs, they’re beasts.

Raikou is a sabre toothed cat. Entei is a lion. Suicune is a deer. This annoys me more than it should, but there’s nothing remotely dog-like about the three beasts.

      • ikato kiyazaki

        does it matter? NO

        • Dan

But it does. It makes people seem like they don’t know what they’re talking about with the game, when they truly may be in other areas. People tend to shut down the advice of people who get basic game knowledge wrong.

  • Sahil Vishwakarma

i have encountered ho_oh 3 times and i have catched all three of them only in three to four balls by using golden berry and a great throw just try it out

  • Thiago Stone

It was a pretty easy catch so far. 13/15 catches only today. I recomended throw in a 35° angle from bottom right in his head.

  • CyberBishop1

So far I am 2/2 at level 38, my wife is 1/1 at level 35, my daughter is 1/1 at level 30. So far so good. Best of luck to everyone that has not caught him yet, just keep plugging away!!

  • Higher_Ground

    A few things:

    – Ho-Oh is extremely close to the player when trying to capture. This is worth mentioning so people don’t miss.

    – 2x weakness to rock isn’t much of a problem aside from Golem / Tyranitar, which you wouldn’t be using a fire / flying type to fight to begin with.

    – The moves do suck – it’s not going to be me of much use in a raid, just regular gym battling.

    – Solar Beam is ridiculous. Cannot be dodged reliably in a large group raid and easily 1 hit KOs rock/ground types.

    – The game will suggest terribly weak pokemon if Ho-Oh has solar beam, just because they can survive it. Don’t be fooled – pick something super effective with a charge attack that has multiple bars (so you can get one off). Skarmory isn’t going to do jack to damage the bird, despite surviving SB.

  • Garv

Well I have 3/3 Ho-Ohs and my second one was 100%

  • Eric Heng

I’ve just tested earlier. Seems like Golden Berry combi with curve at great works well. Captured on the 4th throw. Firstly you need to have Gold medal in fire and flying.
