Trainers,

the big Pokemon GO news are finally here! Niantic has announced the Pokemon GO Travel, a new video series to see the world through the eyes of a Pokémon Trainer.

In addition, the first ever global catch challenge has been announced, tempting Pokemon trainers world wide to catch 3 billion Pokémon in just 7 days!

If the challenge is fulfilled, the following rewards will be unlocked:

To recap:

  • Catching 500 Million Pokemon will unlock double XP, 6 Hour Lures and increased spawn rates
  • Catching 1,5 Billion Pokemon will unlock double Stardust, double XP, 6 Hour Lures and increased spawn rates
  • Catching 3 Billion Pokemon will unlock two regional Pokemon, Farfetch’d (worldwide) and Kangashkan (East Asia), double Stardust, double XP, 6 Hour Lures and increased spawn rates

In addition, Niantic is preparing a special celebration event on November 26th in Tottori Sand Dunes, Japan (see our Safari Zone: Tottori Sand Dunes event page for more info), featuring Youtube stars and more:

Stock up on Poké Balls, Trainers. The Global Catch Challenge starts now and concludes with a special celebration at the Pokémon GO Safari Zone event in Tottori, Japan, on November 26.

The following video has been published as an invitation for the entire world to catch Pokemon:

Get ready trainers, this is a huge challenge for everyone included. We are on the quest to unlock that Farfetch’d for everyone!

  • S-GUTZ

finally haha. Lets just hope this isn’t the “secret features” so many youtubers have been hinting at.

    • S-GUTZ

nope this definitely was the youtubers were talking about. Bummer

  • WingedSupernova

I’m hyped af let’s go get 3 billion in 3 days.

  • Spetsen

Should I be the negative guy who points out that Kangaskhan (has been available in large parts of Europe, Anaheim and soon Asia) and Farfetch’d (soon available worldwide) are losing their value? Or will someone else be that guy?

    • Robdebobrob

You can be that guy. I dont like regionals and i hope Gen 3 wont have them. Not everyone has a chance to travel arround the world to get all those pokemon. Im happy if they are release worldwide.

      • Spetsen

You don’t have to have a full pokédex. Completing your pokédex should be an accomplishment and should not be easy to achieve. If you’re not willing or able to travel to get all Pokémon (which applies to most people) just try to get a full regional pokédex instead. Regionals are exciting because they are hard to get, releasing them worldwide defeats that purpose.

        • Tamsin M

possibly that they are giving us a chance to complete the deck so far, before making new regionals… who knows, but i do not mind how they are doing it… lets catch thosem mons

  • ono1113

So if we reach 1,5 billion 26th of november…. it will ublock double dust for just 12 hours or something?

  • Tara Tron

How about release all regionals for everyone and everyone who hasn’t gotten an exclusive raid pass yet gets 1 too?

  • Heydavid17

Obviously, there are both bad and good things about this event.

    The bad things would be:
    – The weather (Considering most people live on the Northern Hemisphere)
    – The motivation factor (Catching Pokemon which we do anyway already)
    – The Regional trade (I’m happy with Farfetch’d, but I would be more motivated if we had Gen 3)

    The good things would be:
    – It’s a Global event (Everyone can participate)
    – We get Farfetch’d added (Some wanted Kangaskhan as well, but it’s a good trade already, considering they have Farfetch’d already in Asia)
    – The Rewards (Personally getting closer to Level 40, and I can add some more Stardust to the 3 million I already have)

So to say it, I guess it’s alright and all, but they could’ve just given us the rewards right now, because making the announcement like this, feels like they want players to return to the game, while us who plays already everyday, kinda seem overlooked.
Yet, I’m happy to get all these good things, but it feels a bit like a slap in the face, thinking that all we caught until now, kinda feels like it wasn’t worth anything, since we now have to capture 3 billion in a week…

Screw it! Global event, everyone can take part, let’s be happy then. 🙂
P.S. They could’ve at least said, how long the bonus items would last for.

    • Robdebobrob

you have 3 million stardust? why dont you spend it? Already have so many high and good pokemon?

      • ono1113

its so hard to spoof for lvl 30 100% pokemons

        • Paul

          Spoofers must die.

      • Heydavid17

I like to save it, and use it only when needed, on high IV Pokemon. It’s also funny to annoy others who barely have any stardust left xD

        • Robdebobrob

But do you have any decent pokemon then?

          • Heydavid17

Well… I need to update my list, but I’m proud of what I have at this point

        • Paul

          Like your trolling

    • Matt Brown

Do you get paid to come in here and whine about everything or something?

  • Chris Seals

So this means all of the remaining trainers playing PoGo just have to catch 1 million pokemon each*.

(* This is intended to be a joke. No need to get butthurt)

    • Tristan Isaac

It’s to try and win back players that quit, and give them a chance to prepare for gen 3. I bet they’ll launch gen 3 not long after this event.

      • Tara Tron

It’s almost like if they put EX raid passes in they could win back a huge chunk of players. But nah, I’d rather try to get time out to play POGO despite it being the start of peak retail and everyone travelling like mad. Great idea, Niantic!

      • Robdebobrob

Gen 3 is confirmed for December, so yeah. Not long after.

        • S-GUTZ

if you look at the picture it says at the bottom more pokemon will be appearing globally… could that mean early gen 3 release?

          • Robdebobrob

No i think that just means more spawns, not new pokemon. If im wrong tough then it certainly will be a big suprise. A good one 🙂

        • Joe1407

All I heard was talk, Not one person from any of the 3 company, have come out and said ” Gen 3 was coming out in December” Only hints about it but, there is always delays.

          • Robdebobrob

“The rest of the Pokémon first seen in the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire video games will gradually arrive starting as early as December!”

That is from the description in a video on the official pokemon GO youtube channel called “Pokémon GO – Spooky Pokémon Sableye, Banette, and Others Arrive in Pokémon GO!”.

Thats not a hint, thats an anouncement. If gen 3 isnt here in december they didnt meet their deadline. But it should be here.

  • Antonio Mercurio

Remember Go fest how they rigged it and gave us gold for legendaries, well its obvious they will do it again! I want farfetch’d but I need the spawn rates to be very high !

  • Curtis Beales

Finally another worldwide event! It will for sure be better than the last one although we all know how that went down. 3 Billion should be no problem for us!

  • WingedSupernova

3 billion is a lot though. If 3 million people log on worldwide and play the entire event then that means each one would have to catch 1,000 pokemon or 143 a day. That’s about 2 and a half hours worth of playing a day per person if it takes a minute per catch (and that’s being generous factoring in transportation time and such). The key to hitting the goal will be the number of people that play and how much of an increase in spawns we’ll see.

    • ono1113

exactly…ive been thinking the same and i cannot belive that 3mil players are playing

      • Robdebobrob

Its loads more. Just because alot of people are negative doesnt mean they dont play.

      • hkmaly

I think there will be lot of players who play like symbolically, only to get the weekly rewards or only when they are outside anyway. Not sure if THOSE can catch their part of quota. Also, I’m sure Niantec knows exactly how many pokemons per week is caught normally and it wouldn’t surprise me if it would be between half and one billion … I mean, that’s how I would set up the limits.

    • Tamsin M

apparently 65 million still play and if this is the case we only need to catch about 8 each to start getting the double xp to start with…

      • WingedSupernova

Oh good. I’ll still be getting a couple hundred by Tuesday evening hopefully.

        • Tamsin M

exactly, we can do this and lets get double xp and double stardust coming in soon so we have more time with it before thened of the event

      • Robdebobrob

If its 65 million we need 47 each.. Where did you learn to math?

  • Robdebobrob

So its not quite clear to me when the rewards are unlocked. The 26th? Or the moment the goal is achieved?
From the video i thought the 26th, but there is a website that makes me think its the moment you unlock it.

  • News for games

What about delibird and smeargle ?

  • Dani Bron

    where is the catch counter?

    • MarxBrothers88

The counter is nowhere, but Niantic will announce to be achieved to Bronze , i guess.

  • CJCroen1393

AH! I so would love to have Farfetch’d and Kangaskhan be available worldwide! I hope this works out! I’d love to finally have Daffy and Big Mama in my inventory (yes those are the nicknames I intend to give them)!

    • S-GUTZ

      its only farfetch’d

      • CJCroen1393

Well okay then. I’m fine with just getting Farfetch’d anyway because I like Farfetch’d.

  • Chris Denton

Finally, the video series everyone has wanted.

  • Michael Georgiou

Given how glitchy and broken the game gets when there’s an event like this, is this really wise?

  • Colin Margison

Will Kangaskhan be available in New Zealand?

  • David Barinque

.-. better to get tyra than kanga

  • ino

We might have a chance if Niantic fixes are Pogo Plus…

  • Tamsin M

I am hoping we get a countdown to the numbers being caught worldwide…be fun to see those millions clocking up… even if it is once and hour updated or something

  • Dimas Aditya S

Which part of east asia exactly?

  • Cooper McCollum

    3,000,000,000 pokemon
probably around 30,000,000 active players if it was 65,000,000 in May
    3,000,000,000 / 30,000,000 is 100 per player
    Shouldn’t be too hard

    • Sheams

Right! Only 100 catches in an entire week. I think active players catch that many daily, not to mention those using the Go+ and Gotcha.

    • Robdebobrob

58 so far, and im at work right now just hitting my GO plus. EZ PZ

  • Quinn Waterman

Niantic needs to post a live counter for the amount of Pokemon caught, or else this event will fall through

  • Ph. Win

Of course I am looking forward to catching Farfetch’d (pokedex is my main goal)…

But am I the only one who feels a bit awkward about the fact that Niantic is simply not able to create a story around these events? (Like “How come a regional mon appears worldwide? And why is this connected to catch rates?”)

  • Antonius Naumann

Yeah cool. Just remove the value of regional Pokemon, before you add trading.

  • LaserOstriches

I live in Fukui Prefecture (West Japan) with Tottori a ways west of me. I just checked to see if it would be easy for me to get there or not………IT’S NOT. Japan is known for it’s extensive public transportation network, including lots of intra-prefecture train lines and it would still take me 5 hours and ¥12,000 ($110 approx.) to get there, ONE WAY. You’re better off if you have a car, but not by much with highway fees here.

Is there a reason they chose the Tottori Sand Dunes? Cuz I’m not seeing it right now other than being a big flat sandy area. The weather in Japan is already miserable. The daily winter rains have already started in earnest.

  • Christopher Andrew Moore

How about we hit 3billion and u lift all region locks???

    • awlagfare

      this! phuksake!

  • awlagfare

‘If the challenge is fulfilled, the following rewards will be unlocked’

    unlocked untill?

    also:

so a worldwide event with a regional gift? thats just plain stupid.

    • Robdebobrob

The regional gift is only for the region that already has farfetchd, wich will be unlocked world wide. Actually makes alot of sense dont you think?

And the rewards will last till the 1st of december

      • awlagfare

I meant kangashkan, how about make that unlocked worldwide

  • Michael March

There a live counter for this anywhere?

  • Вяра Дишкова

The one thing I don’t like about the event is that Kangashkan won’t be available worldwide. I guess they do it, ’cause during the summer it was found around Europe and other places, but let’s remember, not everywhere in Europe (no Kangashkan in East Europe for example)

  • Judith Flow

Just caught a Farfetch’d (not great, Fury Cutter/Leafblade), so I guess we reached 3B.
