Half of the Regi- family, particularly its
,
and
form, has a well-established pattern in Pokémon GO: extraordinary defensive bulk, but mediocre as damage dealer. It all boils down to its typing that largely determines whether that legendary Pokémon finds a home in the meta, or quietly gathers dust as a Dex filler; and exactly because of the dependency on typing, Dynamax Regice could only truly shine in one specific scenario.
Dynamax Regirock makes its Max debut through this week’s Max Monday; and on the surface, it sounds familiar to Regice: same elite 309 DEF, same low 179 ATK, same dependence on typing to carve out a niche. But unlike
which only effectively resists
attacks, the
typing for Regirock is the key difference that makes it shine way brighter.

Having Rock Smash and Rock Throw as its fast moves, Regirock has access to
Max Knuckle and
Max Rockfall. However, similar to Regice, with only 179 ATK, it falls far behind top-tier damage dealers of both types – most notably
Gigantamax Machamp (~68% higher DPS) and
Dynamax Gigalith (~26% higher DPS).
With an identical stats to Regice, and access to
Lock-On, Regirock follows in the same mold of its
family member and becomes another tank to be added into trainers’ Max Content roster.
The difference? It does its tankiness way better than Regice.
Where Regirock has the edge over its icy sibling is in its typing, or in particular, the number of elements it resists. With
typing, Regirock resists
,
,
and
– 4 distinct types compared to Regice’s
-only resistance.
This gives Dynamax Regirock a larger pool of match-ups in the current meta: it currently sits at #1 vs.
, #2 vs. both
and
, and within the top 10 vs.
,
,
and
attacks, which make Regirock a much more usable neutral tank vs. Regice.

As the Max roster expands, however, Regirock’s defensive standings will be significantly challenged. In that future, it will only be able to retain a top 10 position vs.
attacks in the long run, with its
,
, and other rankings falling off as tankier, more versatile Pokémon’s enter the meta.
Dynamax Regirock follows Regice to the tee. It is an amazing current-meta tank, with top tier resistance against
,
and
attacks, and a very much usable neutral tank.
Eventually, as more and more Pokémon’s enter Max Content, Regirock will slowly fall off and should then be used mainly as a tank against
attacks where it will forever stay in the top 10 rankings.
As such, for the Max Monday event, our recommendation is to farm up as many Dynamax Regirock as you can, but do keep in mind the coming GO Bigger Replay event at the end of the same week to strategize your free MP accordingly. If you farm for one, prioritize one with the highest HP/DEF possible, and you can ignore its ATK IV.
