Trainers, Niantic have announced that they are going to be testing new visual changes to Pokémon GO in certain parts of the world over the coming months.
“We continually strive to improve the Pokémon GO experience. As such, we want to ensure the changes we make are beneficial to—and make a strong, positive impact on—the greater community, as well as each individual Trainer’s experience, before we launch them globally.”
Trainers in these regions may see the following:
- Visual changes to the in-game Pokémon GO map, including encounter screens.

I like the new visual update to #PokemonGO . I hope the spawns will more reliably align with the biome going forward. pic.twitter.com/dciNhyBM8K

Reports are already coming in on social media showing the different backgrounds from trainers in New Zealand, showing new capture screens, maps and GBL backgrounds that more accurately reflect the biomes the trainers are playing in.
We have previously had special backgrounds for Halloween and Christmas, giving hope to trainers that there could be potential for more permanent biome backgrounds, and it looks like Niantic are now testing these out! As always trainers in New Zealand and the APAC region who may be testing these new features, we salute you!
Are you in one of the areas that are testing these new background updates? Be sure to share photos on social media and tag us!
