Among the 10 different types in Pokémon TCG Pocket, Darkness has cemented itself as one of the most dominant ones over various metas. Darkrai EX (Space-Time Smackdown) set the tone for this charade, followed by a huge surge in this category from Extradimensional Crisis with the debut of Guzzlord EX, Nihilego, and Naganadel.
In the latest Mega Rising set, we have a new Darkness-type card that has become a hot favorite: Mega Absol EX. With this season’s Ranked mode starting November 27, 2025, this Mega Evolution looms large in the minds of even the most seasoned players
So, let’s check out the best Mega Absol decks you can run in battles, be it Ranked or solo, and get yourself a ton of victories.
Note: I’ll be going over the Pokémon you can use in these decks, and the choice of the Trainer cards is left to you, in accordance with your strategy. You may prefer more Pokémon Tools, you may focus on healing support to keep your cards healthy, or you may be inclined towards disrupting the opponent with cards such as Red Card, Iono, Mars, and Team Rocket Grunt.
Darkrai EX is the grizzled veteran in Pokémon TCG Pocket, establishing itself as one of the premier attackers with the 20 chip damage it does to the opponent’s Active Pokémon via its ability, even if it is on the Bench.
Mega Absol EX is the new kid on the block, but with a chip on its shoulder that has even helped it replace the famed Giratina EX in the notorious DarkTina deck! Mega Absol EX deals 80 DMG for only 2 Energy and also discards a Supporter from the opponent’s hand. Note that it discards, not sends it back to their deck, and shuffles it. The said Supporter, which could have been a game-changer for the opponent, is gone for good, instantly giving you an advantage.
Moreover, Mega Absol EX is bulky at 170 HP (190 HP with Giant Cape). If you arm it with a Dark Pendant Pokémon Tool instead, the opponent throws a random card from their hand into their deck, shuffling it. This adds to the angst of the opponent and often ruins their strategy.
The challenge in using this deck lies in adding all that Energy to both Mega Absol EX and Darkrai EX. Remember that losing a Mega EX in TCG Pocket instantly wins the game for the opponent, so once you have Mega Absol EX set up and up against a hard-hitting opponent, you are under pressure to get Darkrai EX ready ASAP.
There’s a way to go about it, though. Dawn!
Dawn Supporter

Adding the Dawn Supporter card is crucial in these decks as she transfers an Energy from the Bench to the Active Spot. Accordingly, do 20 chip damage from Darkrai EX, and send that to Mega Absol EX (when it already has 1 Energy), to deal a total of 100 DMG.
Fortunately, Mega Absol EX has a retreat cost of only 1 Energy, so when it’s hurt badly, withdraw it, and send that 1 Energy to Darkrai EX via Dawn.
If you really want to clock into more mind games that facilitate Mega Absol EX’s Supporter removal and Darkrai EX’s chip damage, you can use these two cards alongside Mega Absol EX | Darkrai EX: Baby Pokémon, specifically Chingling and Igglybuff.
These two Babies are great additions to the Darkness entourage, and they require no Energy to attack, create an effect, or retreat.
- Chingling prevents the opponent from using any Item card during the next turn. This is amazing for early game, and also complements Mega Absol EX well later in the battle.
- Igglybuff puts the opponent to sleep, and unless they draw heads from a coin flip, they remain asleep and unable to attack or retreat. This makes them a sitting duck for Darkrai EX and also helps farm Energy.
Darkrai EX and Mega Absol EX are a formidable duo, and this couple is bound to give nightmares to the strongest decks. With some good early pulls and judicious Energy grants, you can even take out Grass decks (their weakness) without breaking a sweat.
One thing is certain. After Giratina EX, Mega Absol EX is undoubtedly the best thing to happen to Darkrai EX.
Poisoning the opponent is one of the hallmark traits of Darkness Pokémon in TCG Pocket. While Weezing started the tradition right from the outset in the Genetic Apex set, it was Ultra Beast Nihilego (from Extradimensional Crisis) that truly set the bar with its antics.
Now, a Poisoned Pokémon typically loses 10 HP per turn, but Nihilego’s aptly named ‘More Poison’ ability adds an extra 10 HP loss, even if it is on the Bench. The best part is that this effect stacks, so if you have 2 Nihilego chilling on the Bench, the Poisoned opponent loses a whopping 30 HP!
While Nihilego can attack with a 30 DMG move and poison the target, it costs 2 Energy, something best reserved for stronger attackers. So, we typically adorn Nihilego with a Poison Barb Pokémon Tool to poison the opponent when it attacks, but at the end of the day, we want both Nihilego on the Bench.
Enter Dragalge EX, an impressive 150 HP card that poisons simply on impact from incoming attacks. Put a Rocky Helmet on it, and until you’re ready to attack (with a cool 80 DMG), let your opponent hit.
- With assistance from 2 Nihilego on the Bench, you do a passive damage of 20 (Rocky Helmet) + 10 (Poison from Dragalge EX) + 20 (Poison from 2x Nihilego) = 50 DMG.
- Even with 1 Nihilego, you still do an insane 40 DMG without attacking.
- Add Dragalge’s 80 DMG, and you’re KOing or at least crippling even the best cards in the game. Not to mention, the weakened opponent loses an additional 30 HP simply from poisoning.
Since Nihilego is weak per se and prefers to be on the Bench, you’d need a powerful Darkness type to help complete this deck. Darkrai EX seems tempting, especially when you consider that its ability adds another 20 chip damage. However, it still needs 3 Energy to attack, and that can make it inefficient even with Dawn in tow.
That’s why we have the bulky and menacing Mega Absol EX in the house. With your Poison shenanigans, your opponent is often forced to switch out their Active Pokémon, and relies heavily on Supporters like Sabrina, Cyrus, Iono, or Copycat (including healing from the likes of Erika or Irida in specific decks) to flip the match. By eliminating Supporters from the equation (thanks to Mega Absol EX) and facing decay in HP from poisoning, you have a sound chance of winning the game, often by forcing quits.
This is a brutal way to trouble the opponent and steal the match away; it almost feels radioactive. You can use the Naganadel line instead of the Dragalge EX line for higher Energy efficiency, but lesser bulk and power. That said, Dragalge EX is recommended.
Don’t be afraid of this dark and toxic deck, be terrified!
Hydreigon is one of those Pokémon that remind you of Rampardos or, at the very least, non-EX cards that could have been EX. A clean 130 HP and dishing out 130 DMG for 3 Energy (with 2 Energy that it can generate on its own), his Pseudo Legendary is one of the most fearsome cards in the meta.
Basically, you lead the game with Mega Absol EX or do some stalling with Deino (deals 20 DMG for 1 Energy). Using a Rare Candy, you evolve Deino into Hydreigon, who automatically gains 2 Energy using its ‘Roar in Unison’ ability, but at the price of 30 HP.
But then, you inflict a massive 130 DMG, enough to wreak havoc on the opponent. Yes, you discard all your Energy immediately, but with the next turn’s Energy and Hydreigon’s ability, you can do another 130 DMG right away.
Your Hydreigon should ideally be left with 70 HP after two attacks (which isn’t too shabby), and even if it’s KO’d, you only lose 1 point (it’s a non-EX). Add X Speed to withdraw Hydreigon as and when needed, since it has a 2 Energy retreat cost, and include 2 copies of Copy Cat to improve your chances of drawing Hydreigon fast. You can even add Chingling to hinder the opponent and complement Mega Absol EX.
Remember that Hydreigon can use its ability from the Bench as well.
You can go from zero to hero in no time, as this deck is extremely aggressive and can do burst damage in a few turns. You might need some practice to master this deck, but once you do, you can be unstoppable!
Mega Absol EX is excellent at its job, and this deck helps in upping the damage output through a quick and safe option: Altaria (from Secluded Springs, not Mega Rising) is a Dragon type (so no weakness), and its 2 Energy attack is rather interesting. If this Dragon has 2 or more different types of Energy attached, it deals 100 DMG.
In a Darkness deck starring Mega Absol EX, you can add free Energy-supplying Baby Pokémon who can do the needful right from Turn 1 of the battle and retreat for free. Mantyke (Water), Pichu (Lightning), and Magby (Fire) are all viable options that can devote their Energies to Altaria while you give each turn’s Darkness Energy to Mega Absol EX. To can also give 1 Darkness Energy to Altaria to set it up quicker.
A rather interesting aspect of this deck is that you have only 1x Mega Absol EX, 2x Altaria, and 3x Babies. As such, you’re more likely to draw any of the Babies and Altaria early game, and have them get their hands dirty while you set up Mega Absol EX.
You should also include the Lisia Supporter to pull 2 Baby Pokémon into your hand since they all have below 50 HP figures. To pull Mega Absol EX quicker, opt for May and Copycat Supporters, or even Pokémon Communication if that suits you. Disrupt the opponent with a Red Card.
Overall, this is a simple but very effective deck that can work wonders for you.
This deck is essentially an extension of the Mega Abdol EX | Darkrai EX duo, but with fewer Trainer cards and an emphasis on Greninja (Froakie and Rare Candy). Greninja is obviously meant for the Bench, ideally setting up two while Mega Absol EX and Darkrai EX handle business.
Through the Water Shuriken ability, Greninja offers 20 chip damage (another 20 with a second Greninja), putting immense pressure on the opponent. Of course, there’s also Darkrai EX to mount the damage figures via its own Nightmare Aura ability. These three form the deadliest Bench, and Mega Absol EX functions as your leading attacker.
There are a lot of moving parts in this deck, and it requires more setup than the Mega Absol EX | Darkrai EX partnership with Baby Pokémon like Chingling and Igglybuff, but if you can pull it off, it’s extremely powerful.
There you have it, players! These are the five best Mega Absol EX deck variants that unleash chaos on your opponent, and every one of them is brimming with mind games, reflecting the Darkness type.
Mega Blaziken EX and Mega Gyarados EX may be stronger on paper, but with time, strong players get used to countering those decks. After all, those two heavyweights are quite predictable, but Mega Absol EX brings with it layers of unpredictability and tricks that leave your opponent high and dry!
Embrace the Darkness! And as always, happy collecting and battling, Pokémon TCG Pocket-ers!
