Pokémon TCG Pocket Everyday Wonders EX Card Review & Meta Analysis

The Everyday Wonders set is now up for grabs in Pokémon TCG Pocket, bringing a ton of vibrant artwork and EX cards that include both regulars and Mega Evolutions. The recent meta has been dominated only by Mega Evolutions, so much that using regular EX cards seems to be an outdated practice now.

Will this colorful new set change that and instill a new lease of life into battles? Or is it just a filler booster pack?

Let’s explore the EX cards!

Dedenne EX

We have a new little mouse that can do a whopping 160 DMG for only 2x Electric type icon Energy, and it’s the Pokémon that got the Immersive card in the Everyday Wonders set, Dedenne EX.

Dedenne EX dishes out 40 DMG for each Tool attached to all your Pokémon in play. Since you can have up to four mons in play, you do 160 DMG. Now, since it only has a low 120 HP, you’d want to use it as a late-game attacker, starting with Lightning types like Zeraora, Oricorio, and the new Emolga that also does 30 DMG for each Tool attached.

The idea is to start with Zeraora, generate Energy, then move to Emolga and gradually to Dedenne EX as the late-game sweeper. Add up to five Tools such as Electrical Cord, Rocky Helmet, Giant Cape, or the new Small Balloon (retreat cost of Basic Pokémon is 1 less) with 2x copies of, say, Electrical Cord or Rocky Helmet, and you’re good to go.

However, there still seems to be one issue. How will you ensure consistency in arming your Pokémon with Tools? Well, meet the new Kid’s Room Stadium card that lets you choose any card from your deck (Pokémon or Trainer), and switch it with a random Tool from your deck.

With this Stadium active, you can quickly draw all your Tools in time, and have Dedenne EX ready to unleash carnage for only 2 Energy. Talk about fast and furious damage! Dedenne EX excels in this mechanism.

However, do keep in mind that viral Mega Evolutions like Mega Sceptile EX, Mega Blaziken EX, and more can just OHKO Dedenne EX at the drop of a finger, so try to weaken the opponent’s Mega as quickly and as much as possible before Dedenne EX comes to the Active Spot and hopefully takes the instant win from KOing the Mega.

Milotic EX

Folks, we finally have an EX card that is not just the best from the Everyday Wonders set, but also rivals Mega Evolutions in utility and aggression: Milotic EX!

This stunning Pokémon does 80 DMG for 3x Water type icon Energy, but it has an ability that can ramp up Energy on its own accord. Basically, you grant the turn’s Energy to Feebas first, and then in the very next turn, you evolve into Milotic and use its ability and the turn’s Energy to give it all it needs to attack right away. This is just two turns, and the best part is that you can evolve Feebas into Milotic EX from your first turn itself, all thanks to the new Wallace Supporter.

Using Wallace, you can immediately summon Milotic EX from your deck and evolve Feebas. Using its ability, you are ready to go in just two turns. The best part is that you’ll never really brick thanks to Wallace, and also, the fact that Milotic EX’s attack puts the opponent to sleep.

Does that ring a bell? Indeed, the infamous ‘Sleep Scam’ is back, starring Igglybuff and Mega Shine Darkrai. Just start with this nightmarish Bonnie and Clyde duo, while you evolve Feebas into Milotic EX on the Bench, and for better effects, use 2x Darkrai to deal 40 extra damage on the dozing target. This way, you dish out an incredible 120 DMG, and if the opponent doesn’t wake up, they are in for some serious trouble.

Aside from Wallace being an asset for Milotic EX, you can also use the new Elegant Cape Pokémon Tool to give any Stage 1 card (here, Milotic EX) an extra 30 HP. This is literally a Leaf Cape exclusively for Stage 1 Pokémon like Milotic EX and Gyarados EX/Mega Gyarados EX, resulting in a neat 170 HP for Milotic EX.

Irida and Lucky Ice Pop help with healing support, and you can even go for some fun decks by adding Greninja EX, Water Shuriken Greninja, Suicune EX, or Chien-Pao EX. Finally, Water decks are back in TCG Pocket, and Milotic EX is arguably the best non-Mega EX in the game now, and a fabulous Pokémon even when you take Mega Evolutions into account!

Mega Diancie EX

One look at Mega Diancie EX, and you know that it’s an Energy-hungry attacker, dishing out 40 DMG for each Psychic type icon Energy attached to all your Pokémon in play. In the current Psychic meta and from recent sets, gathering high amounts of Psychic type icon Energy is child’s play.

First, check out the Gardevoir card from Fantastical Parade.

For 2x Psychic type icon Energy, Gardevoir grants 2x Psychic type icon Energy to any 1 of your Benched Pokémon. With Mega Diancie in the backseat, and after evolving Ralts (60 HP + 20 HP via Starting Plains Stadium card) into Gardevoir via Rare Candy, you can devote the required Energy. Moreover, with the free retreat cost for Gardevoir from the Small Balloon Tool, you can then bring Mega Diancie EX, attach the next turn’s Energy, and dish out a minimum of 100 DMG.

Honestly, if you can stall for a bit with Gardevoir (130 HP, after all), you can add more Energy and increase the damage output from Mega Diancie EX. Just in case you think that the Stage 2 and Rare Candy shenigans of Gardevoir can be unreliable, the Everyday Wonders set has a wonderful Carbink to get the job done.

For only 1x Psychic type icon Energy, Carbink gives one Psychic type icon Energy each to two of your Benched Pokémon (2 Mega Diancie EX or a Mega Diancie EX and a Ralts/Gardevoir). Starting Plains gives it a neat 70 HP, and even if you lose it, it’s only 1 point.

Mega Diancie EX is capable of exceptional damage figures, and it gets two very efficient Energy engines in the form of Gardevoir (Fantastical Parade) and Carbink, making it one of the best Psychic types in Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Mega Sableye EX

Not surprisingly, the sneaky Mega Sableye EX comes with a trick up its sleeve. For 2 Energy, it inflicts 80 DMG, and if the opponent has attacked it, it does 40 chip damage. Now, the Darkness type offers a dreaded gimmick that can exploit Mega Sableye EX’s side effect quite well: the Poison status.

Attach a Poison Barb Tool to this Mega, and on getting attacked, you end up doing 50 DMG (40 DMG from Mega Sableye EX and 10 DMG from getting poisoned). To make matters worse for your opponent, add 2x Nihilego in your deck to contribute 20 more damage to poisoned Pokémon, making it a glorious 70 chip damage overall! You can even include good ol’ Darkrai EX to extend it to a crazy 90 DMG just because Mega Sableye EX got hit.

Of course, you can switch out Darkrai EX or even go on to add Naganadel for guaranteed Poison status without relying on the Poison Barb. Of course, there’s Bombirdier for 1 less retreat cost.

Darkness is arguably the best type in TCG Pocket, and as long as you add cards to salvage the 40 damage from Mega Sableye EX (primarily from Poison), there’s honestly a lot you can do with this new Mega Evolution. Needless to say, Cyrus is a boon for Mega Sableye EX + Poison decks, and you can even add 2 Cyrus copies to make your deck more oppressive. Not to mention, you can even pair Mega Sableye EX with the dreaded Hydreigon.

I’ve mentioned in past EX analysis articles that the Darkness type almost always gets better with each set, and Everyday Wonders is no different thanks to Mega Sableye EX. Do expect to see this Pokémon enjoy widespread usage even in future metas.

Hisuian Zoroark EX

The last EX from the Everyday Wonders set is Hisuian Zoroark EX, a Colorless type that, for 3 Energy, does 80 DMG and 20 more damage for each Pokémon in your discard pile. It would have been ideal if there was a Stadium or some other Trainer that could safely discard cards, but for now, you will have to contend with Gourgeist from Fantastical Parade.

gourgeist from pokemon tcg pocket fantastical parade set

With its Soul Shot attack, Gourgeist deals 70 DMG and discards a card from your hand. With more Pokémon in your discard pile, Hisuian Zoroark EX dishes out more damage.

You can also try a deck with the new Caterpie, whose ability helps it evolve immediately into Butterfree, and discards it. Essentially, when Pokémon evolve or are KO’d, they go to the discard pile, and each of them contributes 20 DMG in addition to Hisuian Zoroark EX’s 80 DMG.

To be fair, this is a relatively underwhelming EX compared to the others, and requires a lot of things to fall in place to deal high damage numbers. Of course, Hisuian Zoroark EX is best used as a finisher, but the 3 Energy requirement feels ridiculous since you are often facing Megas, and need to start doing damage as quickly and hassle-free as possible. As a result, Hisuian Zoroark is definitely the least memorable Ex from an otherwise fantastic set.

The Everyday Wonders set has been a pleasant surprise, boasting a bunch of meta-relevant EX cards that can actually work in a meta dominated by Mega Evolutions. There is a lot of focus on quick damage in these Pokémon that is sure to give a difficult time to most decks. We couldn’t have asked for a better set before Mega Rayquaza arrives in the game!

As always, happy collecting and battling, Pokémon TCG Pocket-ers!
