Pokémon Spotlight Hour will feature a different Pokémon and a special bonus for one hour at 6:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday during the month of April. Croagunk Spotlight Hour takes place on April 9th, 2024, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm local time, with a bonus of 2x XP for evolving Pokémon.

This Spotlight Hour is the second April 2024 Pokémon spotlight. It’s a great time to evolve any trash ‘mon in your storage before you transfer them.

Trainers who plan to participate should be prepared with a Mega Pokémon to maximise candy gains per Croagunk caught. Here’s everything you need to know!

Croagunk Spotlight Hour

Bonuses

  • XP icon You will get 2x XP for Evolving Pokémon
  • Shiny icon Shiny Croagunk and its evolution are available in Pokémon GO

Note on XP Bonus

If you do not want to catch the featured Pokémon or do not have enough Croagunk candy saved, you can make use of the 2x Evolution XP bonus by evolving any saved Scatterbug, or opening a Mystery Box or Coin Bag and evolving those!

This is a great opportunity to evolve any Pokémon caught during the Sizeable Surprises event for XP before clearing out your storage, especially any XXS or XXL Pokémon, as evolving them will count towards the XXS and XXL medals! The old-school grinders will remember the days of saving Pidgey and other low-cost evolutions for this sort of spotlight hour, and it can be a good way to grind XP with a lucky egg on.

This event takes place just after Sizeable Surprises, Tymano is the cheapest evolution costing 25 Candy a pop. Diglett, Mantine, Cetoddle, Joltik and Cutiefly are all fairly cheap evolutions with 50 Candy per evolution.

Mega Pokémon that boost Croagunk

The following Pokémon will grant you extra bonuses when catching Croagunk if they are Mega/Primal evolved.

A Note on Mega Catch Bonus

While a Pokémon is Mega-Evolved, additional XP and Candy is granted when catching a Pokémon that shares a type with it, or for any raid boss caught. These do not stack with each other. Additionally, High and Max Level Mega-Evolved Pokémon grant an increased chance to obtain Candy XL when catching a Pokémon that shares a type with it.

Is it worth evolving Croagunk?

PVP

Toxicroak is a Fighting-type that not only gets neutral damage from Fairy-types but can also hit back with a super-effective STAB move against them, something Lucario struggles to do. It might be double weak to Psychic-types, but since there is a lack of good Psychic-type moves, Toxicroak has fewer things to worry about.

Counter and Poison Jab have the same energy gain, and while Counter is more powerful on neutral damage, Poison Jab hits Medicham, Venusaur, and most Flying-types with Neutral damage, while hitting Fairy-types like Azumarill and Togekiss with super-effective damage. Dynamic Punch and Sludge Bomb are great in their own right, and but Mud Bomb lets you have a good move against other Poison-types, so you won’t completely get walled by them. Still, Sludge Bomb not only lets you hit Fairy-types, but it gives you a neutral matchup against most Flying-types.

It is definitely worth building a Toxicroak if you stumble across a Croagunk with good PVP IVs.

PVE

Including Mega and Shadow Pokémon, Toxicroak is the 37th best fighting type attacker and 19th best Poison type attacker. Although it would be a viable ‘mon to use for newer players, there are readily accessible ‘mon higher up the tier lists that serve better use as raid attackers.
