Giratina (Altered Form) is a T5 Raid boss in Pokémon GO. Giratina counters are mostly strong Dragon, Dark, Ghost, and Ice-types, such as Rayquaza, Palkia, Dragonite, Latios, Gengar, Shadow Ball Mewtwo, and Tyranitar. Giratina (Altered Form) is a Ghost Dragon type that has the following stats:

The best case scenario for Giratina (Altered Forme) is a manageable duo with full teams of Dragons, with Windy weather and Best Friend boosts. Ideally, use 3-5 high-level players, or 6-10 lower leveled players when fighting this raid boss.

In this guide, we’ll cover the strongest Giratina counters, the best strategy on how to defeat it, and what CPs you can get when catching a strong Giratina.

Giratina can be caught with the following Combat Power values:

  • 1848 – 1931 CP at Level 20, no weather boost
  • 2310 – 2414 CP at Level 25 with Fog or Windy weather boost

Rayquaza is a beast when used against Giratina, as it exploits its weakness to Dragon-type attacks and deals a ridiculous amount of damage. Rayquaza is followed by three Dragon-types with similar performance: Dragonite, Latios, and Salamence, which all perform excellently against Giratina. TTW goes down towards Latios.

Ghost-types as Giratina raid counters
Shadow Ball Mewtwo and Shadow Claw Gengar are your only two viable Ghost options for fighting Giratina and they are both now considered Legacy. Performance wise, Gengar has better TTW, but Mewtwo faints less, which is frankly expected and something we’re used to. We would use these Pokemon only against Ancient Power Giratina. A special shoutout goes to the glass cannon Banette, it is the frailest of the bunch but has a decently high TTW that might make a lead for someone lacking any Gengar to speak of.

Potion Efficient Giratina Counters
Tyranitar is the only Dark-type we recommend against Giratina. Its slow, but very efficient in terms of Potion usage – it actually faints way less than any other counter on this list, as it takes reduced damage from all Giratina moves. Use in big groups and where Potions are an important factor.

When picking Giratina counters, you want to be sure how big your group is and what moves Giratina has. For us, even in larger groups, we’re actually more inclined to using niche Dragon types to counter it, as they simply didn’t have enough matchups recently. That 100% shiny Dragonite is probably dying to have a good fight with the fabled Giratina.

Beyond that, you will find success with good ice types, like Mamoswine and Weavile, but in a fight like this, the dragons usually top the charts in all scenarios save snowy weather boosts. That being said, if your Mamoswine and Weavile are really high level, do not be afraid to use them in comparison to lower leveled dragon counters!

Giratina Moveset Analysis

Giratina (Altered Form) can have the following moves in a raid battle and when captured:

Fast Moves Charge Moves
  • Shadow Claw Ghost
  • Dragon Breath Dragon
  • Dragon Claw Dragon
  • Ancient Power Rock
  • Shadow Sneak Ghost

None of these moves are particularly dangerous on their own, with Dragon Claw being the scariest option for our Dragon typed counters. Ancient Power is a solid move and Shadow Sneak is the easiest move you can encounter, making it perfect for high DPS teams using Rayquaza for Giratina trios. All of the charge moves are three bar moves.

Speaking of Giratina trio, our simulator shows 671 seconds of TTW for Rayquaza with no weather boost and no friendship boost, which means a trio is more than possible with two friends, and a duo could be a thing when you factor everything in.
