The Legendary Pokémon Palkia is a dual typed Water and Dragon type Pokémon, and is one the handful of Legendary pokémon in Generation 4. Palkia will almost certainly be available only through Tier 5 raids.

Pokemon GO Palkia has a MAX CP of 4559, paired with an ATK of 308, DEF of 247 and STA of 180, which puts it as the second best attacking Dragon type and the best attacking Water type in the game assuming it does not get the Suicune treatment, but we will get into more of that, below. The numbers above assume the 9% Niantic Nerf has not been applied to Pokémon over 4k CP. With this nerf, it stands at a Max CP of 3818 with an Attack of 280, a Defense of 225, and a Stamina of 164. Updated as of 9/9/2018.

Palkia in the Meta

Pokemon GO Palkia will take its place in the meta as arguably one of the best Dragon type attackers in the game, with the competition being Dialga, Garchomp, Rayquaza, Salamence, Dragonite, and Latios. Palkia also enters into the discussion when it comes to the best Water type attacker with its only competitor being Kyogre.

In these charts, we will look at its viability as both a Dragon and Water type Pokémon and how it sizes up to some of the other popular Dragon and Water types in the game.

Pokémon Type Max CP Attack Defense Stamina Original Generation
Palkia Water Dragon 4559 308 247 180 IV
Zekrom Dragon Electric 4654 302 242 200 V
Dialga Steel Dragon 4654 302 242 200 IV
Reshiram Dragon Fire 4654 302 242 200 V
Kyurem Dragon Ice 4118 270 187 250 V
Giratina Altered Forme Ghost Dragon 3965 206 247 300 IV
Giratina Origin Forme Ghost Dragon 4317 247 206 300 IV
Rayquaza Dragon Flying 3645 284 170 191 III
Salamence Dragon Flying 3532 277 168 190 III
Dragonite Dragon Flying 3581 263 201 182 I
Goodra Dragon 3538 220 283 180 VI
Guzzlord Dark Dragon 2906 188 99 446 VII

Overall, the Dragon types sport a very high CP (with higher end Attack and middle of the road Defense and Stamina stats). Palkia’s Attack stat, 308, comes in first among all Dragon types in every generation, and even considering the nerf it is just behind Rayquaza’s 284 at 280. Palkia’s Defense stat of 247, ties only the insanely high Defense stat of Altered Forme Giratina, and only trails it slightly at 225 with the nerf. Palkia’s Stamina stat: 180, is perhaps the Legendary dragon’s lone short coming, where it on the lower tier of the Dragon types for stamina, making things even worse if it gets the nerf and it becomes 164.

Even though there is a plethora of elite Dragon types both in the game currently as well as upcoming in Generation 4, Palkia should quickly find itself as a staple in raid/gym battles that require a Dragon or Water type attacker.

As a Water type attacker, Palkia challenges Kyogre as the best in class. With a higher Attack stat: 308 or 280 depending on the nerf, it would theoretically hit harder than Kyogre. It might not last as long however, due to the defense, 247 or 225, and stamina, 180 or 164, being sub-par compared to the current Water king. This would make Palkia one of the must have elite Water types. Save for the fact that, as you will see below, it does not have access to any possible water type fast moves, save maybe Hidden Power Water.

Palkia will take super effective damage from: Dragon and Fairy type moves.

On the flip side, Palkia will be resistant to Steel type moves as well as double resistant to Fire and Water type moves.

As a Dragon type attacker, Palkia is effective against other Dragon types, and as a Water type attacker, it would be effective against Ground, Rock, and Fire types.

Palkia’s Possible Movepool

Even though there is no way to know for sure what moves Palkia will have, we can look at its main series movepool, comparing them to the moves other high end Dragon and Water types already have access to. We can then derive a list of possible movesets for it:

Pokedex Entries and Facts

Palkia’s pokedex entries from various games definitely give insight as why it is called the “Spatial Pokémon”.

  • Its Diamond Pokedex entry reads , “It has the ability to distort space. It is described as a deity in Sinnoh-region mythology.”
  • Meanwhile other dex entries inform us that, “A legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh. It is said that space becomes more stable with PALKIA’s every breath” and “It is said to live in a gap in the spatial dimension parallel to ours. It appears in mythology.”
