Palkia

The Legendary Pokémon Palkia is a dual typed Water and Dragon type Pokémon and is one the handful of Legendary pokémon in Generation 4. Palkia will almost certainly be available only through Tier 5 raids.

Palkia has a MAX CP of 3991, paired with an ATK of 280, DEF of 215 and STA of 189, which puts it as the second best attacking Dragon type and the best attacking Water type in the game assuming it does not get the Suicune treatment, but we will get into more of that, below.

Palkia in the Meta

Pokemon GO Palkia will take its place in the meta as arguably one of the best Dragon type attackers in the game, with the competition being Dialga, Garchomp, Rayquaza, Salamence, Dragonite, and Latios. Palkia also enters into the discussion when it comes to the best Water type attacker with its only competitor being Kyogre.

In these charts, we will look at its viability as both a Dragon and Water type Pokémon and how it sizes up to some of the other popular Dragon and Water types in the game.

Pokémon Type Max CP Attack Defense Stamina Original Generation
Palkia Water Dragon 3991 280 215 189 IV
Dialga Steel Dragon 4038 275 211 205 IV
Giratina Altered Forme Ghost Dragon 3379 187 225 284 IV
Giratina Origin Forme Ghost Dragon 3683 225 187 284 IV
Rayquaza Dragon Flying 3835 284 170 213 III
Salamence Dragon Flying 3749 277 168 216 III
Dragonite Dragon Flying 3792 263 198 209 I

Overall, the Dragon types sport a very high CP (with higher end Attack and middle of the road Defense and Stamina stats. Giratina being the exception). Palkia’s Attack stat comes in second among all Dragon types in Generations 1-4, just behind Rayquaza’s 284 at 280. Palkia’s Defense stat of 215, is second to only the Altered Forme Giratina. Palkia’s Stamina stat of 189 is perhaps the Legendary dragon’s one shortcoming, where it comes in on the lower tier of the Dragon types for stamina.

Even though there are a plethora of elite Dragon types both in the game currently as well as upcoming in Generation 4, Palkia should quickly find itself as a staple in raid/gym battles that require a Dragon or Water type attacker.

Pokemon Type Max CP Attack Defense Stamina Original Generation
Palkia Water Dragon 3991 280 215 189 IV
Kyogre Water 4115 270 228 205 III
Empoleon Water Steel 2900 210 186 197 IV
Sharpedo Water Dark 2181 243 83 172 III
Gyarados Water Flying 3391 237 186 216 I
Vaporeon Water 3114 205 161 277 I
Manaphy Water 3265 210 210 225 IV
Cloyster Water Ice 2547 186 256 137 I

As a Water type attacker, Palkia challenges Kyogre as the best in class. With a higher Attack stat of 280, it would theoretically hit harder than Kyogre. It might not last as long, however, due to the defense stat of 215, and stamina stat of 189, being sub-par compared to the current Water king. This would make Palkia one of the must-have elite Water types. Save for the fact that, as you will see below, it does not have access to any possible water type fast moves.

Palkia will take super effective damage from Dragon and Fairy type moves.

On the flip side, Palkia will be resistant to Steel type moves as well as double resistant to Fire and Water type moves.

As a Dragon type attacker, Palkia is effective against other Dragon types, and as a Water type attacker, it would be effective against Ground, Rock, and Fire types.

Pokedex Entries and Facts

Palkia’s Pokedex entries from various games definitely give insight as to why it is called the “Spatial Pokémon”.

  • Its Diamond Pokedex entry reads, “It has the ability to distort space. It is described as a deity in Sinnoh-region mythology.”
  • Meanwhile, other dex entries inform us that, “A legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh. It is said that space becomes more stable with PALKIA’s every breath” and “It is said to live in a gap in the spatial dimension parallel to ours. It appears in mythology.”
