Prioritizing Unova Stone

Artwork of Chandelure from Pokémon GO Chandelure

Chandelure is the most important Pokémon that can be evolved with an Unova Stone. It is also the only one that’s relevant in Pokémon GO Raids. Chandelure is objectively one of the best Ghost types available in Pokémon GO, closely behind Origin Form Giratina.

Artwork of Eelektross from Pokémon GO Eelektross

Eelektross is a pure Electric type with little to no use in the modern meta game. Raikou, Zapdos, Magnezone and Electiwire are all better performers than Eelektros. Jolteon performs on par with this unfortunate eel.

Artwork of Cinccino from Pokémon GO Cinccino

Cinccino is a Normal type with no real place in PvE and PvP meta game. Although it has access to Charm Fairy and Aqua Tail Water, Cinncino is too squishy to be relevant.

Artwork of Musharna from Pokémon GO Musharna

Musharna is a popular Pokémon from the main series, but unfortunately, its move pool is abysmal. No Confusion, no Psycho Cut, nothing in the charge moves that could improve its performance. Musharna is surprisingly bulky, but the bulk goes to waste as it cannot produce enough damage. Bizarrely, Musharna’s best fast move is Charge Beam, an Electric typed move.

Simisage, Simisear and Simipour are interesting for their future PvP potential. All of them have Bite / Crunch and three additional moves that distinguish them. The additional moves are excellent on most of them:

  • Vine Whip and Grass Knot for Simisage,
  • Fire Spin and Flamethrower for Simisear,
  • Water Gun and Surf for Simipour.

We’ll see how Niantic choses to use the elemental monkeys in the future, but with a tiny push in move pool diversity, they could be an interesting addition to PvP.

How to get an Unova Stone?

Unova Stone is available from the weekly Research Breakthrough reward. In order to get Unova Stones, you need to complete 7 days of your Daily Research (it doesn’t have to be 7 days in a row).

Unova Stone history and design

  • The stone design is inspired by Pokemon Black and White’s titular color palette
  • Generation V Pokemon require a variety of different evolutionary stones to evolve. Unova Stone is Pokemon GO’s equivalent of those Gen V evolution item, similar to how Sinnoh Stone was introduced in Gen IV
