Pokémon GO APK Mine
Pokémon GO APK Mine

Hello Trainers! Pokémon GO 0.171.0 is slowly rolling out through the Google Play Store (1.137 in the iOS App Store, the iOS App Store usually lags behind).  There is a lot to cover in this one from the brand new Today tab, more details on Pokécoins from quests, new costumes, a unity upgrade, and much more!

Just a warning, many who have downloaded this update have indicated that it is fairly buggy, so download with caution.

Official release notes for this update can be found here.

With that said, let’s get into it!

New Loading Screen

From the top we’ve got Togetic and Seismitoad, We can spot a Cherim, Crustle, Sudowoodo, and Venipede in the middle of the screen.  Scolipede, Raltz and a Joltik along the bottom.  Nothing exciting there, but it’s nice to see a new spring loading screen.  Hopefully, we get to keep this one longer than we did the cliffside one.

New Today Tab – It’s here!

You’ll be able to jump to the gyms you have Pokémon in right from the Today tab, which is an awesome feature.

A large laundry list of text included with the new Today tab.  Looks like we’ll be able to track quite a bit with this new menu.

Looks like we’ll be able to track events, and any special event boxes from the tab as well.

"time_left_plural_day_hour_plural", "Ends in {0} days and {1} hours",
"time_left_plural_day_hour_singular", "Ends in {0} days and {1} hour",
"time_left_singular_day_hour_plural", "Ends in {0} day and {1} hours",
"time_left_singular_day_hour_singular", "Ends in {0} day and {1} hour",

It looks like countdowns for events and quests as well.

Quest Updates

Pokecoins from quests

TotalPokecoinReward(QuestProto quest)

It looks like we’re getting closer to getting daily coins as rewards from quests.  No word on what the quests will be, or how many coins we’ll get.  But it’s exciting none the less.

Daily and Multi-Part

This looks like daily quests are coming, and that some quests will have more than 1 part.  It also looks like there will be a daily limit to how many Pokécoins you can get from quests daily, which will be tracked in the new Today tab.

Quest Warning

"You must complete your research encounter first!",

Warning letting you know you need to complete your encounter before claiming more quests.

Go Battle League

Play until you win

It looks like if you lose all battles in a set you’ll get to play at least until you win once.

Improvements to Battling

  • The ‘Combat Director‘ will keep better track whether or not combat is in a ‘special move state’
  • The game can block access to the surrender button for GBL during certain situations, perhaps during Pokémon switches or charge moves?
  • Team Go Rocket Battles have better handling of the ‘end combat’ stage
  • Combat Hub improves the way it tracks which mons you have available and what mons are accessible to which leagues

It looks like a few odds and ends to improve the performance of PvP battles in general.

New Costumes incoming

Details for some new costume Pokémon have been discovered.  Does this mean we’re getting the rest of the starters in costumes this year?

Transfer Improvements

Speaking of costumes, you can now mass transfer costumed Pokémon.

"You cannot select your buddy!",

You will also get a notification indicating you can’t select your buddy Pokémon when doing mass transfers.

"Do you really want to transfer this Buddy Pokemon?",

You will also get warned when you attempt to transfer your buddy manually.

Buddy Food Notification

Another notification to let you know your buddy is hungry.  Just feed the poor thing already!

Retention Notifications

More things for the game to notify us about.

Abra Community Day … At home?

"quest_at_catch_a", "Catch {0} Abra",
"quest_at_evolve_a", "Evolve {0} Abra",
"quest_at_evolve_k", "Evolve {0} Kadabra",

Are we going to get Abra community day at home?

Special Natu?

"quest_catch_special_natu", "Catch {0} Natu",

Not sure what’s so special about Natu, but here you go.  (No offence to anyone who’s favourite Pokémon is Natu or Xatu.)

Safari Zone Badges 🙁

Badges for the postponed Philly Safari Zone.

Technical Stuff

Unity Upgrade

Probably the biggest “technical” aspect of this update.  Pokémon Go now uses unity 2018.4.15f1, while it previously used 2017.4.28f1

Unity is the graphical game engine that Pokémon Go runs on.  This will probably lead to performance improvements and less resource hogging in future updates.

Downtime Warnings

Are we going to get warnings for preplanned downtime?

Fullscreen Handling

Some updates to the way fullscreen mode is handled, which hopefully will fix the fullscreen bug on Android that affects logging in and out of the game.

Size Logs?

"general_kg", "kg",
"general_m", "m",
"general_vs", "VS",
"general_xl", "XL",
"general_xs", "XS",

Stops and Gyms

  • Sponsor stops can be translated into different languages

  • Gyms can now have a secondary description – GymSecondaryDescription

  • Some minor updates to the Raid UI to better control when a raid starts (Still no “Let’s go now” button… sorry)

Minor Text Update – AR Photos

The old test was: “arphoto_warning_pokemon_too_close”, “You’re too close to the Pokémon!”

The new text is: “arphoto_warning_pokemon_too_close”, “You’re too close to the Pokémon! Stand farther back to give it some space.”

Social distancing, Pokémon style.

Minor Text Updates – Team Go Rocket

Some changes were made to the way Professor Willow talks about shadow Pokémon, and some updates were made to some Team Go Rocket texts that were made as well.

Conclusions and Speculations

The Today Tab is quite possibly the biggest Quality of Life update that we’ve gotten in quite a while, and it’s amazing.  I can’t wait for the event details to start showing up in there as well.

It would appear that we are inching ever closer to the release of some sort of daily quest, daily Pokécoins system.  It’s likely that we will get a series of multi-stage quests that we can complete daily, and be rewarded with a handful of coins for completing them all.  Very exciting, especially for those free to play trainers who rely on gyms to get their coins, and very very exciting for those in more rural areas where even getting coins from gyms can prove difficult.

That’s all for this update, quite a bit jammed into this one!  Lots of it very very exciting.

How excited are you to see the Today Tab rolled out and in-game?  Let us know in the comments.

As always, and now more than ever, stay safe out there trainers!
