With the relatively slow news cycle this week, we’re doing a quick roundup and commentary of recent data mining discoveries. As always, be aware that datamined information can always change and is not endorsed by Niantic.
Techno Blast strings added
Genesect (Normal)Techno Blast is Genesect’s signature move whose type depends on the item held by Genesect. Well, that’s the main series games at least. In Pokémon GO, we’re getting different forms of Genesect which are likely to influence the Techno Blast’s type.
Recently, data miners spotted two things:
- Translation strings for Techno Blast were added and…
- …it seems Techno Blast will actually be 5 different versions of the same move (move identifier goes from 336 to 340).

The timing of this addition seems fairly random, as we’re not aware of any upcoming event that is slated to feature Genesect. Could be an upcoming 2021 release? We have no idea honestly, time will tell.
Holiday 2020 Costumes, clothing and avatar poses pushed
The upcoming Pokémon GO Holidays Event 2020 is set to start on December 22nd and a handful of Pokémon are getting new costumed forms. The costumes range from a new variant of hat-wearing-Pikachu to a crazy “2021 Slowbro” that wears the new 2021 party sunglasses! That’s one way to make a statement while defending a Gym 🕶️.
In addition to the new Pokémon costumes, we’re getting new clothing and avatar poses. These ones are pretty cool if you’re into ugly sweaters and boots. We are, so thumbs up for the new clothes!
Collection challenge strings added
A handful of strings that describe collection challenges and collection challenge quests have been pushed. It’s still not clear what these will encompass, but the expectation is that you’ll have to catch a number of Pokémon typically found in that collection to complete the challenge.
The jury is still out on this one, as the wording of quest texts hints that collections could cover more than region-based collections. Maybe Niantic is building infrastructure for a future event-based collection challenge – collect all Holiday 2020 costumed Pokémon for a collection? No idea really, speculate in the comments section.

And that’s it – not much else has been pushed to the game, it’s holiday and vacation season at Niantic as well. Until next time, see ya!
