At its core, Pokémon GO has always been a community-driven game, fueled by the passion and integrity of its players. It brings together people from all walks of life, creating connections and shared experiences that go beyond the game itself.
Communities like the ones we’ve built around Pokémon GO are more than just groups of players, they’re spaces for growth, connection, and support. For so many, the game offers an opportunity to step outside, meet new people, and experience moments of shared joy, especially during challenging times. The bonds formed here often provide not just a sense of belonging, but a lifeline that can improve mental well-being and help people navigate tough moments. In times of hardship, it’s these connections that offer strength and resilience
But even with all the strength and support the community offers, the impact of losing someone close and dear is something we can never fully prepare for.
When a person who has touched so many lives, bringing light and warmth to every interaction, is taken away from us too soon, it’s hard to imagine how things will ever feel the same again. The loss of such an individual shakes the very foundation of the community, leaving a space that no one else can truly fill.
On the 23rd of January, we were hit with the devastating news that an important figure in the Pokémon GO Perth community, Mel, admin of the Pokémon GO Perth Facebook page, and a close friend to many, was taken too soon from us. Mel wasn’t just the heart of our community, she was a source of guidance, support, and someone who made everyone feel welcome and valued.
It’s a loss that feels even heavier knowing she was taken from us far too soon at such a young age.
While the loss of someone so significant can leave us heartbroken, it also reminds us of the strength and resilience of the community Mel helped shape. In times like these, it’s the bonds we’ve formed and the shared love for the game that brings us together. The outpouring of support and tributes from players across Perth and beyond has shown that, even in the face of grief, the community’s spirit remains unbroken. We come together not just to mourn, but to celebrate the legacy of those we’ve lost and to support one another through difficult times.
After Mel’s passing, the Pokémon GO community in Perth came together to honour her memory. Many players chose to make a shiny Umbreon their buddy Pokémon, just as it was Mel’s in-game. This simple yet meaningful gesture has become a way to keep her memory alive in-game. It serves as a reminder of her love for the game, her spirit, and the deep connection she had with everyone she met. Through this act, Mel’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know her.
Let this be a reminder to take care of yourselves and to check in on those we hold dear. Pokémon GO has given us a unique way to connect with one another, and it’s through these connections that we find strength.
Each day is a gift, and we must remember to spend it appreciating the people in our lives, honouring those we’ve lost, and never taking for granted the moments we have. Life is fragile, and it’s in the relationships we build and the love we share that we truly find meaning in this short life.
Rest in peace, Mel. You’ll never be forgotten. Until we meet again. ❤️
