Eevee has eight evolutions in Pokémon GO: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. Each one costs 25 Eevee Candy, and the Eevee name trick lets you choose each evolution once per account.
Already used the names? You can still get every Eeveelution, but you’ll need to follow its normal evolution method. Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon are random, while the others require Buddy progress or a special Lure Module. Here’s how to get the one you want.

Before spending your Candy, check the picture beside the Evolve button. It should show the Eeveelution you want. A question mark means you will get Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon at random.
Eevee Evolution Name Trick: How to Use the Nicknames
To use the name trick, rename Eevee with the nickname from the table above, then return to its Pokémon page. Check that the evolution preview shows the Pokémon you want and spend 25 Eevee Candy to evolve it.
Each nickname works only once per account. You can use all eight names, but using Rainer for a second time, for example, won’t guarantee another Vaporeon. The name trick skips the usual Buddy and Lure requirements.
Has the nickname already been used?
The evolution preview tells you what you’ll get, but it doesn’t always tell you whether the nickname worked. Eevee may already qualify for that evolution through Buddy progress or a nearby Lure.
To check a name more reliably, try it on an Eevee that hasn’t completed the relevant Buddy requirements, away from active Mossy and Glacial Lures.
How to Evolve Eevee into Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon
Without the nickname trick, Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon are random evolutions. There is no repeatable method that lets you choose between the three.
If the Evolve button shows a question mark, spending 25 Eevee Candy will give you one of these three. You may get duplicates before collecting them all.
The only way to guarantee one of the three is to use its nickname, provided you have not already used that name:
- Rainer for Vaporeon
- Sparky for Jolteon
- Pyro for Flareon
A Rainy Lure does not guarantee Vaporeon, and the weather has no effect on which of the three you receive.
How to Evolve Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon
You can guarantee Espeon or Umbreon by walking with Eevee as your Buddy and evolving it at the correct time of day.
- Set the Eevee you want to evolve as your Buddy.
- Walk at least 10 km with that Eevee.
- Earn 2 Eevee Candy while walking.
- Keep the same Eevee as your current Buddy.
- Evolve during the day for Espeon or during the night for Umbreon.
Pokémon GO uses the day or night shown on the in-game map rather than a fixed universal time. Before evolving, check the image beside the Evolve button:
- Espeon should appear during the day.
- Umbreon should appear during the night.
If the button shows a question mark, check that the same Eevee is still your Buddy, that you completed the walking requirements and that your GPS is working.
The walking method can be repeated with different Eevee. You can also use Sakura for Espeon or Tamao for Umbreon once per account.
How to Evolve Eevee into Leafeon or Glaceon
To get Leafeon without the name trick, evolve Eevee near an active Mossy Lure. For Glaceon, use a Glacial Lure. Stay close to the lured PokéStop and check that the correct evolution appears before spending your Candy.
The Lure does not need to belong to you. You can use a Mossy or Glacial Lure placed by another Trainer as long as it is still active and you are within range.
You can also use Linnea for Leafeon or Rea for Glaceon once per account. The nickname method does not require a Lure Module.
How to Evolve Eevee into Sylveon
To evolve Eevee into Sylveon, set it as your Buddy and earn 70 Buddy Hearts with that specific Eevee. This is the equivalent of reaching the Great Buddy level.
Once you have earned enough Hearts, Sylveon will appear as an evolution option. The evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy.
Buddy Hearts can be earned by feeding Eevee, playing with it, taking snapshots, battling, walking and visiting new places. Your progress is tied to that individual Eevee, so changing Buddies temporarily will not erase the Hearts you have already earned.
If the Eevee has also walked 10 km, it may qualify for Espeon or Umbreon at the same time. Check that you are selecting the Sylveon evolution button before confirming.
You can also use the nickname Kira to guarantee Sylveon once per account without earning 70 Hearts.
If you’re choosing an Eevee evolution for Great League PvP, Umbreon is a strong pick. For raids, Glaceon and Sylveon are useful options if you’re short on Ice- or Fairy-type attackers.

There isn’t one strongest Eevee evolution for every battle. Choose a raid attacker based on the boss’s weaknesses and the Pokémon you already have. For PvP, the league, moveset and the rest of your team matter more than simply picking the evolution with the highest CP.
Why Is My Eevee Evolution Not Working?
If the Eeveelution you want does not appear beside the Evolve button, check the following:
- You have at least 25 Eevee Candy.
- If you are using the name trick, the nickname is spelled correctly and you have not used it before.
- Eevee is still your current Buddy when evolving it into Espeon or Umbreon.
- You walked 10 km and earned 2 Candy with that Eevee for Espeon or Umbreon.
- The in-game map shows the correct time of day for Espeon or Umbreon.
- You are within range of an active Mossy or Glacial Lure for Leafeon or Glaceon.
- You earned 70 Hearts with the exact Eevee you want to evolve into Sylveon.
- Your game has a stable GPS connection.
If the Evolve button still shows a question mark, do not evolve unless you are happy to receive Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon at random.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level does Eevee evolve at in Pokémon GO?
Eevee does not need to reach a particular Pokémon level to evolve. You need 25 Eevee Candy and either an unused nickname trick or the normal requirements for your chosen evolution.
Can every Eevee nickname be used more than once?
No. Each nickname guarantees its corresponding Eeveelution only once per account. After using it, you must follow that Pokémon’s regular evolution method.
How do I know whether I have already used an Eevee nickname?
Try the nickname on an Eevee that hasn’t met the relevant Buddy requirements, away from active Mossy and Glacial Lures. Check the evolution preview before spending Candy. If Eevee already qualifies through its normal method, a matching preview alone won’t tell you whether the nickname is unused.
Can I choose between Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon without the nickname trick?

Does a Rainy Lure evolve Eevee into Vaporeon?
No. A Rainy Lure does not affect Eevee’s evolution. Only Mossy and Glacial Lures provide special Eevee evolutions, producing Leafeon and Glaceon respectively.
Will I lose my Buddy progress if I swap Eevee out?

Will Shiny Eevee remain Shiny after evolving?
Yes. A Shiny Eevee will evolve into the Shiny version of the selected Eeveelution. Make sure the correct evolution appears beside the Evolve button before confirming.
Do I need to save the Eevee evolutions for Level 42?
No. The old Level 42 task that required Trainers to obtain Eevee’s different evolutions was removed when Pokémon GO’s leveling system was expanded and rebalanced in October 2025.
