While Shadow Pokémon are extremely expensive to power up, we have included the top Shadow Pokémon you can use against Primal Groudon. Ensure you no longer have Frustration on these Pokémon before considering adding them to your team. If you have any of these as an option, while they may take more damage than non-shadow Pokémon, they will also deal more.

Primal Groudon

Tips and Tricks Pokemon Encounter icon

You cannot encounter a Primal Groudon from a raid, only a regular Groudon, which can be shiny.

Regular Sprite Shiny Sprite
  • Shiny odds for Groudon will be 1 in 10 during Raid Day. Chances are very good if you complete 10 fights during Raid Day.
  • Primal Groudon is really tough to defeat. We recommend at least 6 trainers, with optimal counters.
  • Check out our dedicated raid guide here to help prep your best team! Ensure your counters have optimal movesets, with Frustration removed from any Shadow Pokémon in your team. Powerful Water and Ground types are your best counters, with a 2x weakness to Water.
  • The quicker you beat it, the more Primal Energy you will get.
  • Utilise Mega Pokémon to boost your fellow trainers Pokémon. Discuss with your fellow raiders in which party slot you have your Mega Pokémon, so everyone doesn’t have theirs in the first slot, therefore extending the Mega bonus over a longer period.
  • Pick areas with multiple easy to access Gyms and use Remote Raiding to minimise downtime and coordinate with a second Raid party if possible
  • You should be able to complete 10 – 15 Raids during this time with no problems.
  • Party Play can give you an additional boost in raids! Set up a Party before you enter your raid, and you’ll be able to activate Party Power by clicking on the blue circle in the bottom left of the raid screen when it is fully charged. Party Power doubles the damage of your next Charged Attack and charges with every Fast Attack. More party members means that your Party Power charges faster!

Primal Groudon CP Pokemon Encounter icon

Primal Groudon is a Ground and Fire type Primal Raid boss. Best counters include powerful Ground and Water types, with a special focus on Water types as it is 2x weak to Water. After the Primal form being defeated, Groudon can be caught with the following Combat Power after being defeated in Raids:

  • 2260 CP – 2351 CP (no weather boost)
  • 2825 CP – 2939 CP (Sunny weather)

Reminder

  • Raid Bosses caught without weather boost are always Level 20. IVs range from 10 (min) to 15 (max). Raid Catches have a 10/10/10 IV floor.
  • Raid Bosses caught with weather boost are always Level 25. IVs range from 10 (min) to 15 (max). Weather boosted Raid Catches have a 10/10/10 IV floor.

How to Get Primal Groudon General icon

You cannot catch Groudon in its primal evolved form from the raid. The primal raid boss is always catchable in its base form and as such, the CP ranges are for a regular Groudon.

Groudon can be caught with the following CP values:

  • 2260 CP – 2351 CP (no weather boost)
  • 2825 CP – 2939 CP (Sunny weather)

In order to get Primal Groudon you will need 400 Primal Energy for the initial evolution, then 80 Mega Energy to evolve the same Groudon again in the future. If you wait for their ‘cooldown’ period to end, Primal Evolution is free. This cooldown period is shorter the higher mega level your Primal Pokémon is. Primal Energy can be obtained via Primal Groudon Raids, and once you have evolved Primal Groudon, you can earn 100 Primal Energy per candy while walking it as your buddy. You can walk any Groudon to earn Primal Energy, as long as you have previously evolved one to register it to your Primal Pokédex.

Primal Reversion Bonuses

You’ll receive bonuses when your Groudon reverts to its primal form!

  • Raids: Increased damage for types when part of Raid Party
  • Buddy: Catching Pokémon with affected type grants additional XP and Candy
Primal Groudon Boosted types
Fire Grass Ground
  • When Primal Groudon is in your party, Fire-, Grass-, and Ground-type attacks will benefit from attack bonuses in raids.
  • When Primal Groudon is your buddy, catching Fire-, Grass-, and Ground-type Pokémon will grant you additional XP and Candy. This can be particularly handy during events to boost candy for more variety of species than Mega Pokémon.

Similar to Mega Evolution Levels, each time you Primal Evolve Groudon, their Primal Evolution bonuses will increase and less Primal Energy will be required to perform a Primal Evolution.

  • Groudon’s Primal Level will increase the more times they revert to their primal forms, improving their bonuses.
  • You can see a Pokémon’s Primal Level and the bonuses granted by that level by
navigating to the Pokémon’s page and tapping the Primal Level icon.
  • Groudon can progress through three Primal Levels, and you can only progress the level a certain amount each day
