Pokémon Spotlight Hour will feature a different Pokémon and a special bonus for one hour at 6:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday during the month of February. The Unova Starter Spotlight Hour takes place on February 25, 2025, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm local time, with 2× Catch Candy bonus.
This Spotlight Hour is the last February 2025 Pokémon spotlight, and it is especially interesting as the featured Pokémon can be shiny, and you will get 2x Candy on catch! In other words, this is a great time to farm those Candies!
Trainers who plan to participate should be prepared with a Mega Pokémon to maximise candy gains per Pokémon caught. Here’s everything you need to know!
Gen 5 Starter Spotlight Hour
Bonuses
- You will get 2x Candy for catching Pokémon
- The featured Pokémon and their evolutions can be shiny in Pokémon GO
Note on Catch Bonus
If you do not want to catch the featured Pokémon, you can make use of the 2x Catch Candy bonus by catching any saved Scatterbug, or opening a Mystery Box or Coin Bag! You can stock up field research or leave any special or timed research encounters until Spotlight Hour to make use of this bonus. If you aren’t interested in Gen 5 Starter candy, you could even use this bonus to get extra candy from catching raid bosses!

The following Pokémon will grant you extra bonuses when catching Snivy if they are Mega/Primal evolved.
A Note on Mega Catch Bonus
While a Pokémon is Mega-Evolved, additional XP and Candy is granted when catching a Pokémon that shares a type with it, or for any raid boss caught. These do not stack with each other. Additionally, High and Max Level Mega-Evolved Pokémon grant an increased chance to obtain Candy XL when catching a Pokémon that shares a type with it.
PVE
⚔️ Raids
A Frenzy Plant Serperior is not good enough for raids, as it is outclassed by several Grass Pokémon in terms of damage. 😶🌫️
🛡️ Gyms
Serperior is tanky enough to defend Gyms better than most Grass-type Pokémon. Do give it a shot! 🐍
PVP
Serperior’s bulk is key to its success in the lower PvP platforms, as it can even absorb super-effective hits. However, this bulk isn’t enough to win most matches, especially given the presence of better Grass-type starters like Venusaur, Meganium, and Chesnaught. 🍃
💥 The best PvP moves for Serperior are Vine Whip, Frenzy Plant, and Aerial Ace.
🔵 Great League
Serperior excels in its singular Grass-type role, achieving great success. 💚
However, there are complaints. Aerial Ace is a strange and weak second move. Even Meganium hits harder, is bulkier, and has a superior second move (Earthquake) to capitalize on. 🌿
That said, Serperior is far from bad. This tank serpent defeats notable Pokémon like Water types, Annihilape, Cresselia, Wigglytuff, Galarian Corsola, Clodsire, Azumarill, and Malamar. It slithers to the top of the Great League throne! 🐍👑
🟡 Ultra League
Serperior slows down in the Ultra League, struggling against massive threats like Giratina (Altered Forme), Registeel, and Venusaur. 😨
Still, it earns notable victories against Pokémon like Ampharos, Clefable, Shadow Golurk, and Primeape. It just cannot handle the Ultra League’s biggest threats. 😣
🟣 Master League
Trainer used Serperior in the Master League. Serperior is hisssstory. 🐍😝

Tepig is a Fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO. As a Fire-type Pokémon, Tepig is weak to Ground, Rock, and Water-type moves.
Tepig’s maximum Combat Power stat is 1224 CP, and its best Pokémon GO moves are Ember and Flamethrower. Tepig encounters are boosted during Sunny weather. Shiny Tepig is available! ✨

🛡️ Gyms
The Shiny flex looks very cool, which is the most value you will get out of your Emboar defending a gym.
🔮 Dynamax
Emboar is not currently available to Dynamax.
PVP
Preferred Moveset – Ember, Blast Burn, & Rock Slide
🔵 Great League
Emboar is an extremely attack-weighted Pokémon with a dual Fire/Fighting typing, which doesn’t help it defensively. It can handle Grass- and Ice-types, but those are few and far between in the current open Great League meta. Unfortunately, Emboar’s poor PvP stats and slow moveset prevent it from having any meaningful impact in Great League. Perhaps a future movepool update will give it more bite.
🟡 Ultra League
There are many better Fire-types for your PvP team, such as Talonflame and Typhlosion. Emboar’s slow moveset and typing make it useless in all but a few matchups in Ultra League.
🟣 Master League
Metagross won’t be happy to see Emboar, but otherwise, it’s best left on the bench at this point.

Oshawott is a Water-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO. As a Water-type Pokémon, Oshawott is weak to Electric and Grass-type moves.
Oshawott’s maximum Combat Power stat is 1182 CP, and its best Pokémon GO moves are Water Gun and Aqua Tail. Oshawott encounters are boosted during Rain weather. Shiny Oshawott is available! ✨

⚔️ Raids
Samurott is a decent, but not incredible, Water-type attacker, currently ranked 21st overall with Waterfall and Hydro Cannon. It has a decent attack stat, but like most starter Pokémon, its CP sits in the low 3000s, which limits its damage output.
🛡️ Gyms
It’s not the bulkiest or strongest Pokémon to defend gyms with.
PVP
Preferred Moveset
Fury Cutter, Hydro Cannon & Megahorn*
🧸 Little League
Samurott would like more bulk to properly participate in the Little Cup format, but its spammy Hydro Cannons can be deadly.
🔵 Great League
Samurott is better suited to limited formats at present, due to other Water-types performing slightly better and the prevalence of Poison-types limiting its Fast Move output. A moveset rework or meta shift may change this in the future, and Samurott will be ready with its fast pacing to Hydro Cannons and decent coverage.
🟡 Ultra League
Similar to the Great League, Samurott is slightly outclassed by other Water-types at present, and its Bug-type coverage is unappreciated in the current meta. However, it is definitely a worthwhile investment for limited cups and to potentially take advantage of a future meta shift.
🟣 Master League
Samurott doesn’t perform strongly in the Master League or Master Premier formats, so consider other Water-type investments instead, such as Feraligatr or Swampert.
