Japanese fans of the Pokémon TV series nicknamed November 21st as ‘Eevee Day’ due the pronunciation of the date being similar to Eevee’s Japanese name. Eevee in Japanese is イーブイ (iibui, pronounced ē-bu-i). As explained in this reddit post, ‘In Japanese, they will often replace sounds with numbers that contain that sound, either in whole or in part. There’s actually many ways to say different numbers in Japanese. 1 can be “ichi,” “hi,” or “wan” and 2 can be “ni,” “fu,” or “tsuu.” In this case, the “i” in Eevee’s name become 1 (“i”chi) and the “bu” is close enough to 2 (“fu”).’ Therefore イーブイ = 1121, November 21st!
Eevee Day was later officially adopted by the Pokémon Company, and was later made an official anniversary by the Japan Anniversary Association.
