PokéCoins after the Gym Update

Following the release of Gym Update, the way PokéCoins are obtained has changed dramatically. Collecting PokéCoins is no longer possible, as the Defending Pokémon now brings back Coins when defeated.

Coins are earned on a fixed rate: 1 PokéCoin per every 10 Minutes defended.

Old vs New PokéCoin System

Much has changed, but Limits mostly remained the same. Interestingly, you now earn 1 Coin per 10 minutes per Defending Pokémon. You need to defend at least 10 minutes in order to get 1 Coin.

Feature Old System New System
Daily Cap 100 PokéCoin 50 PokéCoin
Weekly Cap 800 PokéCoin 350 PokéCoin
Gym cap Unlimited 20 Gyms
Collected via Shop Button Def. Pokémon Returns
Coin Gain 10 per Gym per Day 1 Coin per 10 minutes
Minimum def. time 10 minutes

New PokéCoin Formula

Unlike previously, where the PokéCoin formula was a super simple (Defenders * 10 PokéCoins), the new PokéCoin formula is slightly more complex. The following formula is used upon defender return (supports simultaneous return of multiple defenders)

PokéCoins (defender) = (MINUTES(defender.TimeDefending) mod 10)
TotalPokéCoins = foreach returned defender
   if PokéCoinsGainedToday < 100 and PokéCoinsGainedThisWeek < 700
     SUM(TotalPokéCoins, PokéCoins(defender))
   else
     SUM(TotalPokéCoins, 0)

As you can see above, there is a cut-off point in Coin acquisition, which kicks in every day when you collect 100 PokéCoins and as soon as you hit the Weekly limit.

PokéCoin FAQ

Why can’t I get PokéCoins when placing a Pokémon in a Gym?
In order to prevent Coin shaving and win-win trading, Niantic has disabled initial Coin gain. Your Pokémon has to be deployed for at least 10 minutes. This is intentional (and welcomed in our opinion), as it disables turning over Gyms between teams and Coin farming using win-win trading.

When do I get PokéCoins?
You get PokéCoins when your Pokémon returns to you. Your Pokémon returns when his motivation reaches zero.

How do Gym Badges affect Coins?
They don’t.

What’s the fastest way to farm Coins?
Currently, the fastest and most reliable way to farm Coins is to control 5 gyms which are not often contested. This gives you plenty of breathing space and also performs well under Daily and Weekly limits.
