Mega evolutions return in Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! (Nintendo Switch)

Trainers, we don’t often report on Pokemon games that are not Pokemon GO, but this news piqued our interest. According to Serebii, and transitively to Corocoro, mega evolutions are returning in the Pokemon Let’s Go series!

This addition and the recent confirmation that Alola Pokemon will be featured in Pokemon Let’s Go, make this Pokemon Yellow remake pack quite a punch – features that were never available or expected are making an appearance in the first Pokemon installment on the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo has recently also re-trademarked 15 Kanto Pokemon in Japan, which lead to a wave of rampant speculations about potential new Mega evolutions. The Pokemon re-trademarked in Japan are: Golem, Machamp, Raichu, Jynx, Starmie, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Hitmontop, Arbok, Weezing, Persain, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, and Dragonite. It remains to be seen if these Pokemon will be receiving new Mega evolutions.

Here are the leaked / confirmed mega evolutions for Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee:

How does this influence Pokemon GO?

We are not saying it does, but… Alolan Pokemon were introduced in Pokemon GO as a tie-in to the release of Pokemon: Let’s Go series on Nintendo Switch. Wait, what?

Yeah, let’s go back a bit in time to May 2018, and this Niantic post Say Alola to Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! with Alolan Exeggutor. As the post clearly states:

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are coming to the Nintendo Switch in November 2018! Once released, Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto region that you have caught in Pokémon GO can be brought into these two new Nintendo Switch games. In celebration of this announcement, Alolan Exeggutor will now appear all over the world in Pokémon GO!

Niantic has had the “forms” infrastructure in place for months now, ever since we saw the first event Pikachu form. Nowadays, their usage of forms is common through Alolan Pokemon, and we see no technical limitations to introducing Mega forms in Pokemon GO.

After all, Mega forms, work in a similar way to Alolan forms, at least speaking from a technical standpoint:

  • new base stats
  • new typing
  • new moves

Nothing too wild or dramatic needs to happen if Niantic decides to introduce them. But we’re not saying they will. We’re just pointing out a potential idea. Remember that.
