New Pokémon GO Pokédex Update Live!

A major update to the Pokémon GO Pokédex is now live in game, after initially briefly appearing on 29th January 2025. As of 7th February 2025, it is now back and live properly!

This is the huge overhaul, the biggest change to the Pokédex since the addition of extra Pokédex classifications in 2021!

New Visual Appearance

The Pokédex now looks completely different, with each classification having their own unique colour section that is divided by region. Each region is highlighted with their First Partner Pokémon (starters) with a design that feels a lot more dynamic.

For the main Pokédex, each region has a bar that shows you how close you are to completing it, along with numbers to show you how close you are to completing it. You will see a ‘Complete!’ and a glowing border to mark the region as completed within that classification.

The classifications are as follows:

  • Pokémon
  • Shiny
  • Lucky
  • XXL
  • XXS
  • G-Max
  • Mega
  • Shadow
  • Purified
  • 100%

This gives day one players so much to aim for, with clear and obvious Pokédex classifications to work towards!

Each classification has a ‘Recently registered’ section at the top to highlight your newest additions which is fun. Pokémon not yet registered are clearly silhouetted and easy to spot.

Now when you look at individual Pokémon with your Pokédex, you can also view their potential classifications within their Pokédex screen. For example, if a Pokémon has a costume variant available, that now shows in the Pokédex. If you haven’t completed a Pokédex classification it is greyed out.

New Pokédex Entry Animation

The new Pokédex entry animation has also been updated, and it looks absolutely fantastic! You also now not only get a new Pokédex entry for newly caught or evolved Pokémon, but new shiny Pokédex entries too!

Thoughts

This is a major quality of life update, and the new Pokédex entry screen  in particular feels more like what a modern day Pokédex would actually look like.

With the prior Pokédex update in 2021 some Pokémon you had previously caught as 100% Pokémon and then evolved were missing from the 100% section, and it appears this new version of the Pokédex hasn’t been able to add in those missing entries unfortunately.

So far it feels much easier to find each different classification, and to see what parts of your Pokédex you need to work on. I am excited to target the areas I can clearly see I need to do more with!
