The Lore of Celebi

Posted in

Celebi is the Mythical Pokémon first discovered in the Johto region, Generation II of Pokémon. It is known as the ‘Time Travel Pokémon’ and has dual typing of Grass and Psychic. It is the final Pokémon in the Johto Pokédex, and the 251st Pokémon in the complete Pokédex.

Inspiration

Celebi is a fairy like Pokémon, green in colour, with clear wings that enable it to fly. Celebi’s head is a unique shape, often believed to be inspired by the pearl or silverskin onion, a small onion that is mostly pickled for food. Celebi’s head may also resemble a bulb, with it being the guardian of the forest, this symbol of new growth and rebirth fits with the nature theme.

With large blue eyes, ringed with black eyeliner that would make any makeup lover jealous, this Pokémon was aiming for optimal cuteness, and the design achieved this for sure! It is widely thought that the designers were aiming to create a cute Pokémon that would appeal to girls, with an anime-esque appearance, and those large eyes and wings certainly add to this.

It is believed that Celebi may have been inspired by aspects of the Shinto religion. Shinto is a religion of polytheism (of many Gods), known as the Kami. The Kami are supernatural beings that are believed to inhabit all living things. With the onion/bulb aspect to its design, Celebi could be a Kami, as it is said to be worshipped like a God.

In Japanese folklore there is a spirit known as the Kodama. The Kodama is a spirit that inhabits trees, and is said to be a sort of mountain God. In Greek folklore there is also a form of tree spirit, known as a Dryad. A Dryad is a tree nymph, and they were said to be very shy creatures. Aspects of these folklore tales could have inspired Celebi, which inhabits the forest as a guardian.

Celebi’s name may come from the words celestial and being combined together, or it may be inspired by 美 bi (beauty), as well as serenity and cerebral. It may also be inspired by the words celebrity and bee.

Information

Celebi is the Time Travel Pokémon, making Celebi and Dialga the only known Pokémon to be able to travel through time. Celebi can not only time travel, it can co-exist in two seperate time periods, at the same time. Time travel is confusing! Celebi is seen being able to send others back through time in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, truly a powerful being.

Celebi is often referred to as both the Guardian of the Forest, and the Voice of the Forest. Celebi only shows itself in times of peace, and wherever it appears plant life will flourish. It is shown to create and revitalise entire forests in the anime, but it can also destroy them easily.

In the anime, Celebi is shown to be able to bring a deceased Celebi back to life, and to heal wounds on both Pokémon and humans, as well bringing plants back to perfect health.

Stats

Celebi’s Pokédex entry in Pokémon GO states ‘This Pokémon came from the future by crossing over time. It is thought that so long as Celebi appears, a bright and shining future awaits us.’

The Pokédex entry from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire is particularly lovely, ‘This Pokémon came from the future by crossing over time. It is thought that so long as Celebi appears, a bright and shining future awaits us.’

Celebi is a Grass and Psychic dual type. It is weak to Flying Poison Bug Ghost Fire Ice and Dark types, and is resistant to Fighting Ground Water Grass Electric and Psychic types.

Celebi has access to a mixture of Psychic and Electric type fast moves, and Psychic Grass Normal and Fairy type charge moves.
