Urshifu Single Strike or Rapid Strike: Which one is better for Raids and Max Battles?

Pokémon GO trainers will finally be able to evolve their Kubfu, starting from the GO Battle Week: Final Strike event and you must be excited to add Urshifu to your collection!

But wait… Urshifu is not just special for being part of an evolvable Legendary Pokémon line as it’s also infamous for being two forms: Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style.

Introducing Urshifu Single Strike Style & Urshifu Rapid Strike Style

These two hunky dory Legendaries don’t just differ in their “Style,” but also in their typing and moves.

  • Single Strike Style Urshifu is Fighting/Dark
  • Rapid Strike Style Urshifu is Fighting/Water

While you may like both Urshifu forms, the catch here is that evolving Kubfu is easier said than done.

You can evolve Kubfu into Urshifu (Single Strike Style) with 200 Kubfu Candy after you defeat 30 Dark-type Pokémon in raids or Max Battles with Kubfu as your buddy. You do not have to defeat the Pokémon with Kubfu.

You can evolve Kubfu into Urshifu (Rapid Strike Style) with 200 Kubfu Candy after you defeat 30 Water-type Pokémon in raids or Max Battles with Kubfu as your buddy. You do not have to defeat the Pokémon with Kubfu.

Moreover, a lot of trainers have only one Kubfu. So this begs the question: Which Urshifu Style should you evolve your Kubfu into? Which one is the priority?

Let’s find out!

Key points

  • Both Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style of Urshifu have the same stats. Add the fact that they have the same Fighting type moves, they are on the same level in the Fighting type department and prefer the Counter + Dynamic Punch set.
  • Urshifu Single Strike Style as a Dark type will go with Sucker Punch + Payback while the Rapid Strike Style as a Water type goes with Waterfall + Aqua Jet.
  • Single Strike Style has fewer weaknesses (including a double weakness to Fairy) but also fewer resistances than Rapid Strike Style. In contrast, Rapid Strike Style has five weaknesses but more resistances. So defensively, they aren’t too different… it’s apples and oranges.
  • We will first see how Urshifu in general (as they are the same as Fighting types) fare as Fighting type attackers in PvE. We will keep Megas and Shadows aside for a quick and easy comparison.
  • To deduce which one is better overall, we’ll see which Urshifu form performs better in their secondary typing, that is, Dark and Water, and we will also check out their Dynamax (and Gigantamax) profile, and finally, a look into their Master League behaviour.

Urshifu Single & Rapid Strike Styles as Fighting types

Using GO Hub’s Pokémon DPS/TDO Comparer tool, we have the following:

pokemon go hub dps tdo comparer tool for fighting types

Both Urshifu forms are great Fighting type attackers when not considering Megas and Shadows. They possess a good blend of DPS and TDO.

Many trainers don’t have a Keldeo and Lucario is glassy so Urshifu is right behind Terrakion in overall score as a Fighting Pokémon.

Urshifu Single Strike Style as a Dark type

Using our tool:

As evident from above, Urshifu Single Strike figures out among the top 10 non-Mega/non-Shadow Dark types. Not too impressive so does Urshifu Rapid Strike fare better as a Water type?

Yes, Urshifu Rapid Strike is dowwwnnnnnn there. It’s embarrassing, actually. But hey, what did you even expect with the silly Aqua Jet?!

Urshifu Single & Rapid Strike Styles in the Raids meta

  • Urshifu Single Strike Style has got, well, style as it’s a very neat Fighting type attacker and a good enough Dark type attacker.
  • Urshifu Rapid Strike Style is as good as Single Strike Style in the Fighting type meta but as a Water type, it rapidly falls down the list and a bunch of Water Pokémon outclass it in damage output.

Urshifu Single & Rapid Strike Styles in the Max Battles meta

As a Fighting type (Both Urshifu)

Gigantamax Machamp takes the affirmative lead but Dynamax Urshifu (either form) is better than Dynamax Machamp.

As a Dark type (Urshifu Single Strike Style)

Dynamax Urshifu Single Strike Style is a supreme DMax Pokémon, complemented by the fact that Sucker Punch’s cooldown is 0.5s. This makes Urshifu Single Strike a tailormade DMax Defender and currently a top-tier Dark DMax mon.

Gigantamax Urshifu Single Strike Style with its signature move GMax One Blow is touted to be brilliant and it competes with Gigantamax Gengar against Psychic Max Battles. GMax Gengar surpasses it convincingly but regardless, GMax Urshifu Single Strike is set to be an amazing Dark type GMax.

Both Dynamax and Gigantamax forms of Urshifu Single Strike Style are excellent and Sucker Punch is truly a blessing for them.

As a Water type (Urshifu Rapid Strike Style)

With Waterfall as the Fast Move (1s cooldown), DMax/GMax Urshifu Rapid Strike Style’s influence is not in Single Strike Style’s league. Its signature move GMax Rapid Flow would definitely improve Rapid Strike Style’s prospects but Single Strike Style with the 0.5s cooldown Sucker Punch will remain superior. Overall, whether it’s DMax/GMax Urshifu Rapid Strike, they’re going to be useless as Water types!

Urshifu Single vs Rapid Strike Style in PvE

  • Urshifu Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style have the same stats and the same Fighting type moveset. Hence, they are the same as Fighting types.
  • Single Strike Style as a Dark type >>> Rapid Strike Style as a Water type
  • Dynamax/Gigantamax Single Strike Style >>> Dynamax/Gigantamax Rapid Strike Style

Urshifu Single Strike Style is stronger and better than Urshifu Rapid Strike Style in PvE

Urshifu Single vs Rapid Strike Style in PvP (Master League)

Urshifu Strike Strike Style

Urshifu’s offensively inclined stats make it suitable only for the Master League, and in this format, the Single Strike Style is an absolutely dominant force. This monster is a core breaker, using its snappy Sucker Punch (brilliant PvP Fast Move), and the hard-hitting duo of Dynamic Punch and Payback to punish the meta.

Urshifu Single Strike’s list of victims is jaw-dropping. It beats Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma, Black and White Kyurem, Giratina Origin and Altered, Dialga Origin and regular, Palkia Origin and regular, Mewtwo, Melmetal, Kyogre, Ho-Oh, Excadrill, Rhyperior, and Landorus Therian! Of course, Fairy types are a concern but even Superman has his kryptonite.

Urshifu Rapid Strike Style

Urshifu Rapid Strike Style is decent but not at all at the level of dominance of Single Strike Style. Some impressive wins for Rapid Strike include Palkia Origin, Dusk Mane Necrozma, and Rhyperior but Single Strike is insane, being able to overpower the strongest threats in the Master League.

Urshifu Single Strike Style is one of the best Pokémon in the Master League while Rapid Strike Style is just good, nothing special about it

So which Urshifu form should you evolve Kubfu into?

Without any doubt, it’s Urshifu Single Strike Style.

All the best, trainers!
