Pokemon GO Incense Guide

Hello everyone,

today we’re bringing the in-depth guide to Pokémon GO Incense item and the numerous way it influences the way in which Pokémon interact with the player. Most, if not all, of the information listed here are experimentally substantiated and fairly accurate, at least for 0.29.2 version of the game, but if you have different experiences and thoughts about Incense, write them down in the comment section.

Let’s start.

Pokémon spawn frequency while using Incense

After days of debate, a reddit user called omnialord dug out a part of source code that verifies the long rumored facts behind spawn frequencies:

  • Incense spawns 1 Pokémon every 5 minutes while standing still
  • Incense spawns 1 Pokémon every 1 minute or 200 meters while moving

The following code excerpt verifies the claim, but the interesting fact is that the code configuration enables developers to tweak or nerf the relative power of Incense at any given time.

What Pokémon does Incense attract?

As per current knowledge, Incense attracts nearby Pokémon (the ones visible on your radar) but can also cause random Pokémon spawns.

However, there are two important points about Pokémon attracted and spawn while using Incense:

  • Combat Power is usually higher than the CP of Pokémon you encounter in the wild
  • Pokémon spawned while using Incense are usually more uncommon for the area

Incense and PokeStops

Although not verified it seems that Incense works better at PokeStops, at least for the rarity of Pokémon that it attracts. Using Incense near a PokeStop will and staying within the PokeStop range is recommended as you are able to farm both the stop and capture attracted Pokémon.

Does Incense affect other players?

Yes, it does, but not as much as a Lure Module. If you are traveling with teams, it seems to affect all players nearby, but only the user is more likely to find rare and uncommon Pokémon spawns.

Should I use Incense at home/office?

It depends! Is your radar filled with Pokemon? Use it. Oh, it’s empty? Think about it twice, Incense is fairly expensive and it’s always better to use it while moving, due to increased frequency of Pokemon spawns while moving.
