Top 5 (Non-Legendary) Mega Evolutions to Look Forward to!

Posted in

Mega evolutions are in full swing! With new mega evolved Pokémon being released consistently with each passing month, and several of them in the data mine, mega revolutions are indeed getting all the hype. Add the fact that the mega evolutions system was recently revamped, it is safe to say that people look forward to new mega evolutions in the game.

The icing on that cake? The addition of mega evolutions to PvP, even though it was temporary. This was a really great move by Niantic to boost people’s interest in these powerful Pokémon. I bet we are all eagerly awaiting the next Mega Master League.

In a nutshell, the concept of mega evolutions has gained widespread prominence in Pokémon Go. This should make you wonder… what are the best mega evolutions that you should look forward to? To ensure fair play, I’ll exclude legendary mega evos such as Mega Mewtwo and Mega Rayquaza, and even the Primal formes.

With that being said, let’s find out the five best mega evos coming up in Pokémon Go (in no particular order).

#1 Mega Garchomp

Max CP 6132
ATK 339 DEF 222 HP 239
Weak to Strong Against
Dragon Fairy Ice Dragon Fire Electric Rock Poison Steel

Now you may call it bias due to my thing for Dragon types in general and Garchomp in particular that I’ve started this list with Mega Garchomp. But damn… this is a beast! The ATK stat of 339 and excellent bulk makes it surpass all Dragon and Ground types in the game except Mega Rayquaza and Primal Groudon (with Precipice Blades).

To put it into perspective:

  • As a Dragon type, Mega Garchomp beats the likes of Black Kyurem and Mega Salamence. While Mega Rayquaza dishes out higher DPS, Mega Garchomp isn’t weak to Rock types
  • As a Ground type, it surpasses even Primal Groudon (with its current moveset). But when Primal Groudon gets access to its signature move Precipice Blades, it will surpass Mega Garchomp, but the chomper will still be superior against Electric types
  • Now coming to a really cool tidbit… Mega Garchomp has the highest stat product of any Pokémon in the entire game. Yes, even higher than Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Gyarados, Zacian (Crowned), and Eternatus. Mega Garchomp’s stat product in the Master League is at a staggering 12618
  • You can use a single Fast TM to switch Dragon Tail into Mud Shot and vice versa. Having  Outrage and Earth Power as its charged moves, you can seamlessly alternate between a top-notch Dragon and Ground attacker, making it extremely flexible

It is easy to see why Garchomp is your go-to pseudo legendary and also one of the most formidable mega evolutions to grace the meta. No wonder it has that psychotic grin on its face. Mega Garchomp is one of the most powerful Pokémon in the entire meta. Period.

PS: Unlike base Garchomp, shiny Mega Garchomp is *chef’s kiss*

#2 Mega Lucario

Max CP 4325
ATK 310 DEF 175 HP 172
Weak to Strong Against
Fire Fighting Ground Dark Fairy Ice Normal Rock Steel

Lucario took the Fighting type throne when it learned Aura Sphere. As such, it is the best non-mega, non-shadow Fighting type in the game. But when it mega evolves, Lucario takes its stonks to levels you can’t even imagine! Yes, it still isn’t bulky enough, but with that massive 310 ATK stat and an amazing type combo of Fighting and Steel, Mega Lucario is going to resist loads of types and deliver exceptional damage. Truly, Mega Lucario’s neutral DPS is going to be off the charts!

Not to mention, Lucario is one of the most popular Pokémon out there. With Ash Ketchum having his very own Mega Lucario in the Pokémon Journeys anime, trainers from all across the world are eagerly looking forward to this mega evolution!

#3 Mega Gardevoir

Max CP 5101
ATK 326 DEF 229 HP 169
Weak to Strong Against
Ghost Poison Steel Dark Dragon Fighting Poison

For the longest time, Pokémon GO lacked a viable Fairy type due to the lack of a Fairy type fast move. The addition of Charm made fairies a red alert in the meta. Now, we also have Fairy Wind in the game. But no matter what, nothing edges out the gorgeous but deadly Mega Gardevoir! Just imagine a 326 ATK stat Charm killing your dragons and fighters! Even with relatively expensive charged moves, Mega Gardevoir can be potent in PvP as well. Just wait till this mega Fairy type nightmare makes its debut and charms one and all!

#4 Mega Metagross

Max CP 5552
ATK 300 DEF 289 HP 190
Weak to Strong Against
Dark Fire Ghost Ground Fairy Ice Rock Poison Fighting

Metagross has probably been the longest reigning champ of a Pokémon type, with Meteor Mash elevating it to the apex of the Steel throne. How about taking it many notches higher with Mega Meragross? Bulky, hard-hitting, and nearly unbeatable… Mega Metagross will be a staple in both PvE and PvP.

While Zacian (Crowned) may challenge Mega Metagross if Behemoth Blade is done right, you can always count on this pseudo legendary to work wonders for you. That huge X on its face is meant to eliminate its opponents for good. Can’t wait!

#5 Mega Tyranitar

Max CP 6045
ATK 309 DEF 276 HP 225
Weak to Strong Against
Bug Fairy Fighting Grass Ground Steel Water Bug Flying Fire Ice Ghost Psychic

Tyranitar was once the most dominating Rock as well as Dark type, but it fell in grace after the introduction of the likes of Rhyperior with Rock Wrecker, Terrakion, Rampardos, Hydreigon with Brutal Swing, Yveltal, etc. But Ttar’s mega evolution is its redemption arc! Mega Tyranitar has some of the best stats you could ask for, more or less making up for its slew of weaknesses. Both Rock and Dark are excellent types for a raid attacker, and while Mega Tyranitar may not exactly be #1 in DPS, its well-rounded stats and mega boost make it the most reliable. On that note, can we please have Rock Slide, Snarl, or Brutal Swing for Tyranitar, please? Our Godzilla mon deserves better

What about the Hoenn starters?

Yes, I get you. The mega evolutions of the Hoenn starters are undoubtedly going to be amazing. The only reason I didn’t include them in the list is that I feel that the 5 stalwarts here would have a greater impact in the long run. But if you are still eager to know how Mega Sceptile, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Swampert would fare in the meta, I’d written an article on the Hoenn mega evolutions that you can check out by clicking here

Parting words

Gimmicks like mega evolution make the world of Pokémon all the more interesting. In Pokémon Go, the impact of these mega evolved mons is undoubtedly monumental. With more mega evos in the pipeline, the meta is undeniably on an upward growth curve.

To make the best of what’s to come, be sure to look forward to the five OP mega evolutions listed in this article. Until then, have fun!
